Rita's Raring to Slim Diary - 2014

I'm Rita and for as long as I can remember I seem to have been on a diet of one kind or another. I've probably done just about every diet there is on the planet.

I wasn't always fat; I was very slim when I was young but having had 4 children and not losing the weight in between (my fault) I just got bigger and bigger until I reached 15st 4 lbs. I knew I needed to do something but that was the turning point. Since then I've been to Weight Watchers and lost 3 stone, but then it crept back on when I stopped. Over the last 3 1/2 years I've been going to Slimming World starting out at 14st 6 lbs and managing again to lose 3 stone before I started 'playing' at it.

2013 was a very down year; 2 deaths in the family, son-in-law diagnosed with a brain tumour and needing intensive treatment whilst daughter was pregnant; my second granddaughter being the only high of the year. Then I spent 2 months ill after I had a flu jab at work. It didn't take me long to make excuses about not staying on plan. This has seen me soar again to 12st 7lbs and I'm heavier now than I was last New Year.

Well, no more messing for me. 2014 will be the year I get to goal, and my goal, as it stands at the moment, will be 10 stone. I can't remember the last time I was 10 st. The lowest I got to was 10 st 6 lbs before it went kaput!!

I'm going to keep a diary here; can't promise to post every day, but I'll put all my ups and down; hopefully more of the first than the second and by doing this there will be no hiding place for me to make excuses.

Please feel free to give me advice, a kick up the backside if it's needed and lots of encouragement and I'll try to do the same for you.

Here's to a brilliant year!!

Rita xx :clap::whacky068::wavey::sign0144:

Hi Rita, Found your new diary and here to subscribe.

Sounds like you have had a rough year but it's time to look after yourself now, The way I look at it, what good are we to our family and friends if we are unhealthy and depressed!

Can I ask how is your son-in-law doing now? Hubby was diagnosed 3 years ago with a tumour which had to be removed, as much as they could anyway, it was a low grade glioma which may grow back slowly but he is doing well right now :) (One of the things on my list of things that helped me to stop caring about myself in the last few years!)

You have made the first step by getting on the scales and starting your diary and I am sure you will make loads of friends here who will keep you on track and give you loads of encouragement

Take care
x

Hi Chrissie

Thanks for your words of encouragement.

Rob is not good at the moment. Jo, my daughter, Rob, Ethan, 5 and Lily, 5 months have been staying with us over the Christmas period; they're going home tomorrow.

Rob started with headaches in June last year which got worse and eventually Jo had to ring 999 for an ambulance for him. They did a CT scan on arrival at the hospital and then sent him to the University Hospital near to them as they said it was a brain tumour. He has 2 shunts in to drain any fluid and has had radiotherapy in August. He did seem to be recovering quite well but then was taken into hospital on the Friday before Christmas because he was getting confused and doing strange things; his short term memory is nearly non existent and that can be quite hard work.

They can't remove the tumour because of where it is in the brain so we're now waiting for him to have another scan mid-January to see how it's progressing because although the first MRI after the radiotherapy at the beginning of December showed the tumour greatly reduced the second one, which he had just before Christmas showing the tumour growing again. We're really not sure what's going to happen from here.

As you can see, while all this was going on Jo was pregnant with Lily, who has been the one bright spark in a rather dark year. It's been made more difficult because they live 2 hours away from us as Rob's in the army so they live on camp and we can't just pop round to give support, hence them staying over Christmas.

How is your hubby doing? Does he have problems from time to time or is he fully recovered; well as much as he can be provided it doesn't grow?

Yes, I decided that I had to do something; I can't wait until everything is back to normal as that might never happen, or take a long time & what is normal anyway? Ha Ha!!

First day hasn't been bad and I'm really very focus. Back to work again tomorrow so hopefully there'll be no chocolates or biscuits left - I will resist!! :)

Hope your day has been good and that we get what we deserve this year.

O9Hi Rita, Really sorry to hear he is not doing so well, it must be very worrying for everyone! I keep telling myself though how lucky we are to be living in this age, they know so much more than they did, even as much as only 30 years ago! I hope things improve very soon for you all. I guess Hubby was quite lucky as it was in an area that could be operated on, it affected one side of his body, he originally went to see the doctor because he kept getting numbness in his leg and thought he had a trapped nerve, it took 6 months to find out what was causing it, he has to take medication for the rest of his life to stop the "seizures", he has a little numbness left from the operation and has developed tinitus but other than that he seems fine, it took me a while to accept that he wasn't going to keel over after the operation though!

I am assuming we have some things in common, We are the same height, although I am a little under 5'2" but it won't let me put in 3/4 and I am guessing your target date is your birthday? Mine is on 20th July so if it is then we are the same birth sign too :)

Well as you will know from past experience it will be whatever it is so we just keep each other going. Lily has really given him something to keep going for so that's positive.

It must have been quite frightening for you whilst your hubby was going through it & I'm not sure that you will feel free of it anytime.

Yes we do seem to have things in common. I'm 5' 2 3/4 but as you say it doesn't let put in 3/4. Yes that's my birthday so we are the same birth sign too; how strange!!

Had a good first day & even signed up for dry January, so that should help too, though I normally only drink at weekend so hopefully it won't be too hard.

Now for day 2!! Xxx

Good luck I'm also gonna stop messing about and get serious ;) my husband is home in 37 days and I want some results by then haha we can do it :)))))

popping in to subscribe sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the moment hope this gives you some 'me time' and chance to focus, good luck with your slimming world journey

Hi Jackie

Yes, there's a lot going on but we'll get through.

Want to try and concentrate on losing some weight and then doing things for them will be easier.

Good luck to you too.

Good luck to you too. You just have to have your head in the right place. Is your husband in the services? I'm sure that you can do something within 37 days; and counting! :)

Well yesterday was a good day. No alcohol and on track food wise.

Thought I might have a problem when I went back to work today but luckily all the chocolates and biscuits had been eaten by others earlier in the week.

I've had tea but I'm sat here craving something, but not sure what; will stay out of the kitchen and spend some time on here, keeping my fingers busy so that I'm not tempted.

I'm off in the morning to my daughter's taking 2 grandchildren with me (and the hubby, of course) but while the children will be staying with Jo, hubby and I are staying at a Holiday Inn close by; there's not enough room in the house.

I'll need to keep my wits about me and try hard to keep on track for the next few days. I hadn't intended starting again until next Monday but decided at the last minute to start on 1st January, so I'm not expecting a massive loss this week but a loss of some description would be good.

I'll try and keep in touch with my diary but can't promise.

Wish me luck!! xx

Thanks; I'll do my best.

We're off to Jo's (though we are staying in a Holiday Inn). She had so much to take back that she left Ethan with us and so we're taking him home, but we've managed to gain an extra grandson to take with us!! :D The thing is that once we leave on Sunday she'll have the children & Rob to deal with on her own, so I'm trying to give her some help for as long as I can. Then I come home and go to work for a rest. Ha Ha x

Of course, sorry Rita I wasn't thinking. I had assumed it was a weekend break..I hope all goes well and it's not too stressful. I hope that Rob is improving (also weird as that's hubbies name!)

That's OK. It will be a sort of break & it's the breakfast I'm worried about. They've had a good break over Christmas but she didn't want to go today & I didn't want her to go either. Still we have the weekend before things go back to normal.

Something else in common; a Rob in the family!! X :):D
