Can I ask a question about tinned fruit?

I can understand the logic behind not being able to mash fruit or make it into a smoothie, but why is tinned fruit synned? I mean the fruit that is in fruit juice not syrup.

I often have tinned peaches in fruit juice, but pour the juice away. Just can't understand why this synned?

it's usually been cooked to some degree which changes the properties of the sugars in it and is normally peeled so there is less fibre in it than the raw fruit....

but then again I'm not an expert so I may have it totally wrong..

The juice isn't free, and when tins are sealed, I think they are done so with heat, so the fruit inside is technically cooked.

I think anyway, i'm sure i've heard that in class somewhere over the years!

I think its because the canned stuff is tinned/processed under pressure so they are softer and easier to digest than normal fruit and more akin to cooked/mashed fruit? Thats what i always thought anyway!

I think it's because tinned food is actually cooked when it's in the tin to kill off any bacteria, so the fruit is cooked. Cooked fruit is synned for the same reason as pureed fruit - see this thread -

I don't know if "cooked" is the right term, but they definitely heat the sealed tins to a high temperature for a short time to kill any bacteria, so they are "slightly cooked" maybe?

how do we stand on "jars" of fruit??? plastic tubs of peach slices and the like??

if fruit is not fresh and in it's raw form, then it is syns.

This thread reminds me of when I had to visit a canning plant as part of my job. Myself and my colleagues had to sit through a looooooooong talk on the history of tinned food and how "sexy" tin cans are nowadays!!
