HELP - balsamic in onion gravy

Ok, before starting sw, one of my favourite meals was sausage and mash made with onion gravy, which i make out of cooking red onions in balsamic vinegar (using about half a small tumbler of balsamic) then 2 oxo cubes dissolved into a pint of water, and then using cornflour to thicken. Onions would also have some sugar added.

Other than synning the cornflour and sugar, would balsamic used in this way be free? And perhaps lessening the balsamic

Any thoughts as im planning on doing this tomorrow

Thanks

It's free I think!!! I wouldn't have thought it would be classed as food abuse so use as much as you need. Hmmmm now I've got a hankering for sausage and mash with onion gravy! Lush!!!

All vinegars are syn free - no food abuse issues with this
Sounds lovely - please post the full recipe

Here's what I do:

2 Red onions cut into rings, pop into frying pan, will now spraying with frylite (used to use butter but thats now a :nono:)

Cook onions until soft.

Add tablespoon of nothing comes close to sugar (used to be sugar but thats also a :nono:) and 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar (I mix together in a small tumbler) and then pour over onions, cook for about 5 mins or until absorbed

Melt 2 oxo cubes (or one, depends on what strength you want) and 1 tesco value vegetable stock cube (one syn?) make up to one pint.

Pour stock into frying pan and cook on med heat for about 10/15 mins .

Mix 1 teaspoon of cornflour (one syn?)with a drop of cold water to make a paste, add some of the base gravy mix from the frying pan into the cornflour paste and mix well, tip the cornflour/gravy mix back to frying pan, cook til starting to bubble and them turn down to low heat to simmer until needed, gravy will also start to thicken at this point.

Total - 2 syns? (well worth it)
On the full fat version :)D) its lush

Will try sw version tomorrow and let all know

Could you turn up the heat and just reduce the sauce - saving on the cornflour syns

Sounds good though

I've made the syn free gravy posted by Kwise1 a few times and it was lovely, I'm not sure how to paste the link but the title was:
Syn-free rich red onion gravy

Good luck x

I make similar, but don't use sugar or balsamic vinegar, I use either red or white wine (125 ml = 4.5 syns which is between three of us), added to the fried onions/shallotts, letting it bubble away, then add the stock and reduce until thickened.

On a separate note, totally truthful now, what are quorn sausages like

Anyone? x

After everyone on here raving about them, I tried the new "best ever" ones, which were one syn each, and I hated them, found the consistency really strange, but that doesn't mean that you won't like them

I like them!! Very tasty... but at 1 syn when were free......bit of a shame...

Quorn beef style and red onion burgers are free tho and very yum!!

Ginlin. I am truely and deeply shocked that you could even think about adding wine to anything!Never was a girl so aptly named!

I have two usernames that I have used in the past years on different forums, my favoured name is chardonnay, but this must have been taken when I joined minimins, because ginlin is my second choice;)

Sounds delicious will give that a go for tomorrow.

Is the veg stock cube not free though or is this a different type (oil etc)

Thanks
