I have a pending credit going into my account tomorrow with a reference 'suspense'. I'm not expecting anything to come in, so I phoned the bank and they said its a BACS transfer, and maybe it was expenses I was due? I'm not due any expenses, and even if I was they get paid on a friday. They can't tell me who has sent it.

It looks like its been accidently sent to me. What do I do? Can I just ask the bank to sent the money back? Should I put it in my savings account til someone asks for it? Is it someone trying to launder money? Should I change all my accounts just to be on the safe side?

Am I panicing for no reason!?

Thanks!

Strange one?

Shouldn't the bank be able to answer these questions for you??

Might be worth calling back and asking to speak to the fraud department? xx

It is a strange one! I phoned the financial ombudsman & they told me that often the bank can't tell u for Data Protection reasons. They suggested I put it in my savings account & write to the bank to tell em I have done it so I can't get into trouble for either theft or fraud!

I don't understand why the bank can't just send it back!

If its been done in error though the sender can do an indemnity claim and get it back immediately, so you might find that happens.

I'd check the account everyday in case the money deposits back out suddenly and leaves your account overdrawn etc. although that may be harder when abroad?

Is it a large sum? X

Are you absolutely sure you're not due a credit from someone - insurance, utility company etc.

If not, personally I'd leave it where it is just in case the rightful owner does the indemnity claim thing & the money is debited again from your account. I'd write to the bank (write rather than ring so I'd have an audti trail) to tell them I suspected there'd been an error as I wasn't expecting any such credit.

If you leave it there, but ignore it IYKWIM, no one can ever have any course to doubt your honesty or integrity.

If it was cash that you'd handed in to the police, it's a bit hard for a 3rd person to actually prove they'd lost it so you could claim it but, with this credit having an audit trail (albeit the bank won't investigate or divulge) legally it would always belong to the rightful owner - basically there's no statute of limitations.

Google the name of the account it came from? I did it when I had a mystery payment and it was an insurance refund I had forgotten about as it took them so bloomin long to send it back.

I'll see what it says tomorrow & if I still can't identify it I will write to the bank I think.

Thanks all for you advice as always x
