Confuuuuuuused?!

Hi all!!

I'm Michelle n I've been looking around this section of mins on n off for a few weeks now. So much info!!!! It's great!

Here's the thing, having lost lots of weight with vlcds in the past I know low carb works for me. I have a few days and nights out coming up in a fortnight that have been planned for a while so I have no intention of heading towards ketosis until then. ATM I'm just cutting out the rubbish n reading up.....

I was just about to buy the 'Atkins book' and recipe book but realise there are several versions,

Tried to look into the differences or best version easiest to follow etc but it's all open to interpretation n I'm more confused than when I began! I have read some people advising unlimited fat and protein and others stating a specific ratio....

Il cut to the chase, can somebody simplify this for me please and explain the differences between the versions the books etc

I'd like to order the books ASAP so I have a couple of weeks to familiarise myself with the plan make a meal planner etc until I come to grips with things.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Shell,

I'm feeling the same as you, confused!! I got the Atkins 72 book and did a few of weeks, but that didn't seem to fit what I was reading on here. I got that one because a lot of people seemed to be saying they had lost more when they had done that version.

Now I'm thinking of getting a more modern one just do I fit in with what every one is talking about. Also because I'm hoping there may be more guidelines. The old book is very relaxed rule wise and I need something more regimental.

In terms of doing the diet, you will have no problem. I lost loads with a vlcd too, but couldn't get back into it after I gained. This is so much easier to get going with. But I didn't get the fast loss, that's why I'm looking for stricter rules.

I do think I can keep this up long term though.

Best wishes for your start.

Hi JDI

So I bought the new book. The New Atkins New You and the cook book too

I plan on reading through tonight and over this week and weekend to get my head around it n cone up with maybe two weeks worth of meal plan

I think the whole thing will take a while to sink in n I have a fair bit to lose so two weeks at a time I guess.

Think il post my meal plans for confirmation I'm on the right track before doing my shopping :)

Sooo are you still sticking to the original? How's it going?

I've decided I need to read it again. Or maybe order the new one, I like specifics and the old one isn't specific at all.

Hi Shell,

I think I might buy the new book, the old one is quite fuzzy with quantities and details. And I like specifics.

In finding it a bit hard thus Easter weekend, I'm cutting myself some slack and re-reading my book for more info.
Best wished

Hiya

I must admit I'm having trouble getting my head around it all

Brain ache having to count everything!!! N I've not even started yet! Still working on meal plans n planning on starting week after next

I know you got to count 20 net grams carbs per day but didn't know had to count protein and fat too :-/

I do really believe it will work but bit worried too as it goes against so many things I've imbedded in my brain other the years like low fat options no butter etc etc

Let me know if you get the new book maybe we can start together not this Monday but next

Hi Shell,
I have just been reading some of the other diaries to convince myself if works. When you see what some have lost it is a big amount.

I am going back to work on Tuesday And giving it a go. Properly. I am just going to go with the book I've got while I wait for the new one to arrive.

Let me know how you get on. X

To date I've lost 3st 2lbs since November (without doing any exercise whatsoever) so it definitely does work.

I was a bit intimidated by having to count carbs, even though I'd done it years ago, but I think it helps not to get too fancy with your menu when you first start.

I kept my initial two weeks of Induction as simple as possible - just meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fats and the appropriate dairy products. I used carb counters online and the info given on packaging, and I weighed/measured everything (a set of digital kitchen scales is invaluable as far as I'm concerned). At that point I didn't really bother with protein/fat ratios, nor particularly with calories, because that would have done my head in!

I didn't start to refine things until about a month and a half into the process when I joined Fitday.com and started tracking my food properly. To my surprise, following the rules in the book (NANY) meant that I was pretty much spot on for fat and protein. Where I was falling down was quantity: I was eating too little without realising it, so I was able to correct that over time.

So my advice is to keep it simple and stick to basic foods that are easy to account for when you start, at least until you're more comfortable with the programme. And don't stress about the protein and fat ratio because if you're following the rules it should probably take care of itself.

Good luck! You CAN do this! :D

Completely agree Scrumbles - very sensible approach! I've been on it since last May as I have a huge amount to lose but it works :)

I'm (re)starting tomorrow too. Maybe we could all stick together? I have the orange coloured Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book as well as the accompanying cookbook ( both unopened!!!) as well as the New Atkins New You cookbook which has a good overview of the plan at the beginning. Although I've decided to skip induction and go straight to OWL

As it was said earlier I'm not going to get hung up on counting anything other than carbs, that should be enough. I'm going to stick to eggs for one meal - maybe scrambled, or boiled, or as an omelette . Then have protein with a handful of salad leaves for another meal, and something similar for tea. So tomorrow will have scrambled eggs for breakfast, home-baked gammon and salad for lunch and probably pizza chicken for tea ( flattened chicken breast topped with a tomato sauce with a few rings of onion, peppers and mushrooms, with a sprinkle of grated cheese and basil leaves)

Not looking forward to getting on the scales in the morning but it has to be done!!
