Fruit going bad too fast..

all of the fruit I'm buying seems to be going mouldy within a day or two of buying it...
there's something not right there...

I bought some oranges the other day and had to throw most of them out because the very next day 3 or 4 of them had mould on them...

I keep topping up my fruit bowl so I may just ditch the lot and bleach the stupid thing and the top of the microwave where it sits just to be sure it's not just being passed from the old fruit or bowl to the new fruit..

Would it be better in the fridge?? I tend to keep mine in the fridge in the warmer months.

I keep all my fruit in the fridge apart from banana's which dont last very long in my house but in the fridge most of my fruit outlive their shelf life by 2 to 3 weeks x

Dont place your fruit by bananas as the gases that bananas release ripen up other fruit to quick then it goes of

If you can, buy your fruit and veg from a farm shop - they last a couple of weeks. If you buy from a supermarket I believe they have already been transported and sat in warehouses for at least a couple of weeks

I use food saver bags from lakeland - they really extend the length of time your fruit and veg stays fresh in the fridge

yeah it's the aldi / lidl fruit that goes off fast..

it's hard one day and mouldy the next.. seems to skip the ripe stage..

I'll buy from tesco and asda from now on then..

it's cheaper in aldi but it's false economy if I have to buy twice as much..

Fruit flys are destroying my fruit at the moment! I hate cold fruit out of the fridge so i use a cake cover/net, since i started using it my fruit is lasting a bit longer. I have also started to lift up the crates in the supermarket and get the fruit from the bottom, it is normaly not as ripe and lasts longer. x

How weird, where I am the asda is fine, tesco dodgy and the worst by a MILE is the co-op!

Yup, I don't get fruit & veg from aldi as it is usually rotten a couple of days later. Best is farm shop or Waitrose.

If you clean your fruit bowl with bleach you might find it difficult to get rid of the smell. Very hot water and detergent, and a good rinse should do the trick.

And you should not keep anything on top of a microwave.

The problem with fresh food in shops is that there is no way of knowing how it is stored behind the scenes.

I've also noticed that supermarket fruit doesn't get ripe.The supermarket stuff is boxed and transported when they are still green and then artificially kept in cold storage, as soon as we buy them and keep them out of the fridge (which is natural) it rots.

The trick is to eat it ASAP

Has anyone noticed how quick ASDA lettuce goes off and the smell when you take it out of the plastic. They pump it with a gas to keep it looking "fresh" on the shelf, Ive heard.

I used to sell to a big fruit & veg grower who supplied to all the major supermarkets. They told me there is no diffrrence at all in the quality they send to for example asda & m&s. It all comes from the same fields no matter where you buy it.

It really is all to do with how its stored by the supermarket & how long its out on the shelves before you buy it.

A lot is down to the manager in the fruit and veg. department.

If the fruit is not kept well in the warehouse of the supermarket it will affect the lifespan of the fruit. For example one branch of a chain here in my village has dreadful fruit and veg and yet if I drive 15 minutes down the road to the head office and main supermarket of the same company the fruit and veg is the best in the area of any supermarket. The head office supply the shop in my village.

Keeping your fruit on top of the microwave is the kiss of death for anything you have there. It should be kept in a cool place.

Also it is fatal to keep apples with your other fruits as they give off a ripening agent that affects the fruit around them. I use them to ripen avocados if I want them quickly.

Same as others have said the top of the microwave is not the best place to keep fruit. Also keeping things in a fruit bowl can be hit and miss cause if one thing goes off the stuff next to it tends to go off as well.

I do know what you mean though, it's so annoying when you think you have a big lovely bowl of fruit and then come to eat it and it's gone fury!

I find strawberries and raspberries don't last very long, they go soft and then a couple of days later go mouldy. It's annoying as they're so expensive. Mine come from Tesco. I bought some lovely raspberries the other day though - the best I've ever bought and they were from co op

I know what you mean - I buy the mixed frozen berries now as I was having them in my magic porridge in the morning and it was a complete waste of money. The frozen ones are fine for things like that & Sainsburys do a value bag for £1.09 which does me 3 days.
