Ive been a yo yo dieter all my life. I lost 3 stones at slimming world around 5 years ago but put all the weight back on when i "came off the diet". I put the weight back on and lost it again. Needless to say i put it all back on again and I am now the heaviest ive ever been.

Deflated by the constant weight loss and gain i tried for a gastric band. My application was rejected due to not being heavy enough. You have to have a BMI of 50 where as mine is 47.

My weight causes severe depression and im at an all time low. I dont know which diet to follow. I need something that I can stick to for life (pretty much) as i am so prone to weight gain.

I dont know whether to go on a VLC diet like Cambridge to get the ball rolling and lose the majority of my weight then switch to a more realistic long term plan like slimming world. Although im worried about doing slimming world again because i cant keep the weight off.

Im willing to do something dramatic. I am now at that point

Do you think this action plan is ok?

Only you can know what diet suits you best, but given what you say about yo-yo ing I'd go for something long term like slimming world or weight watchers, there is no need to "come-off" you just need to accept that these are eating habits for life.

You didn't keep the weight off because you returned to your old way of eating, and quite frankly, same as all of us, you just can't eat like that and not gain weight, which is how we all got to be overweight in the first place!

You need to go into this with the mindset of changing, not dieting, as the only way you can maintain is to carry on being mindful of what you eat x

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I think it's the same for many of us, it's all about the mindset you're in x

Thankyou for your reply and i totally agree. In your opinion whats the best "diet" that you can stick to long term and Im not sure what diet will suit me best???

I think it totally depends on you, pre kids I was low GL and really healthy, never ate breads, processed food etc, however after having kids I found it really hard fitting in with them and put a lot of weight on. I'm now doing slimming world because it means I can often cook one family meal ( like tonight I'll prob do a pasta dish) and all of us can eat it, so it suits me as a busy mum.

However if I was only feeding myself/had more time I'd do low GL or Paleo, I don't eat meat so Atkins etc don't appeal. It really is down to what you enjoy, I hate anything that involves lots of weighing etc

Agree with both the previous posts.
If you are going to see your life as constant "diet" then you're eventually going to give up, you need to get your mindset into a position where you are willing to make whatever changes are necessary to be leaner, healthier and lighter. And that this is more important than any immediate reward that food may give you.
You know SW works for you - so why not start there to get rid of the first few stone and than look at eliminating cravings and triggers afterwards - which is were a grain free and sugar diet is excellent. Once you eliminate them from your diet then the cravings for them stop & it becomes so much easier to refuse these foods.
I lost 4 stone in 6 months with SW and have now started on a more primal type diet - with a few tweaks. 6 months ago I was a sugar and refined carb addicted morbidly obese recluse - now I've an overweight BMI but I swim, jog, go out, eat well & I'm never hungry (still overeat now and again but it's now and again - not 3 times a day) I enjoy trying on clothes rather than picking up the biggest things in the store and hoping they fit when I get home.
No food can give me anything like the feeling that shedding the fat does.
Have a look at Marissa Peer's book - You can be Thin. I've found it really helpful to keep my mindset in the right place.
Good Luck - whatever plan you choose (and they all boil down to calorie intake/expenditure really).

I can only echo what the others have said - you need to find something that works for you. My top tips would be as follows....

1. Cut out all white carbs - they have no nutritional value

2. Eat 'good' carbs moderately. So, try and avoid days that look like this....

breakfast - cereal

lunch - sandwich

snack - cereal bar

dinner - pasta..... because all you will have done is eaten carbs all day.

3. Avoid snacking. Eat three good meals a day

4. No alcohol.

5. If you give SW a go, disregard their mad advice about 'free' foods. Limit your portion sizes... no one needs to eat unlimited amounts of pasta or Muiller Light yogurts!

I would recommend Weight Watcher as it controls your portions. Resolve to stick to whatever you choose for one week. No throwing in the towel on day 2 and falling with your mouth open on a pile of mince pies. Commit yourself and if you follow the above tips and stick to a plan, you will have lost weight.

What are your stats?

Hey ho Mrs - have to call you to rights about a couple of points :D5. If you give SW a go, disregard their mad advice about 'free' foods. Limit your portion sizes... no one needs to eat unlimited amounts of pasta or Muiller Light yogurts!
SW does not say that - it is our piggy brain that sees/hears what we want to. The SW mantra is eat until "you are satisfied/full" with free foods AFTER superfree foods. We have selective hearing - ask your mother :D

< Swiftly scans larger's diet of choice >

AAAGHHHH.... It's SW :D

Yes, you're right of course... however, I have a feeling that the words 'free foods' will be removed when SW do their next big shake up. I have read countless diaries on here with folk lamenting they have stuck solidly to the plan all week and put on a lb... and it transpires they have eaten loads of pasta and a million of those mug shot things.

God, how can I dig myself out of this hole? < looks for spade >

LOL - I quite agree with you about the whole refined carbs on SW thing & people just bleat but my consultant says it's ok .... even they get it wrong. The keystone to EE is the third superfree and if you fudge that and then have free food snacks inbetween like mugshots, pasta n sauce and the other crap plus syns then you'll never succeed. I know I found you could have 3 slices of Dunnes wholemeal better for you bread as a healthy B choice - so I'd do green days and have 2 lots of 3 slices bread, then add in a couple of ryvitas as syns with salad, 5 cheese triangles as my A choice & have a huge plate of pasta and sauce with veg. All of this was perfectly within SW rules but guess how many pounds I lost ;). I think they're issuing new books soon but as far as I know it's moving away from red and green - not free foods ... personally I think it's easier to abuse EE than red and green.
I get frustrated when you can see why people aren't losing weight but when you question their food choices everyone jumps on with the "but it's free" line. No food is free - it all comes at some kind of cost to us (Says she watching someone melt butter, dark chocolate, almonds, sugar and eggs to make the most gorgeous choc puddings)
