shakes vs low cal diet

Hi all, just a quick question.

What is the difference in having 4 shakes a day to being on a low carb (1000 cals a day)
 
Eating a low calorie intake doesnt ensure you get the nutrients etc your body needs, plus you wont be in ketosis so youll probably be constantly hungry
 
but would the losses be about the same
 
Not really as 4 shakes is only around 520 calories so there will be a deficit of 500 calories more than being on a 1000 calorie diet.
 
I was on weight watchers and according to my fitness pal I was constantly having less than 1000 cals.

I put on weight which is why I'm back on a VLCD :)
