Slimming World on Prescription

Hi guys,

I joined Slimming World nearly 2 weeks ago (second weigh in tomorrow) and I managed to lose 8 lbs on my first week :D YAY!

A friend has now informed me that I should be able to get a 12 week slimming world prescription from my GP, does anybody know any more about this? Also, would I still be able to get this even though I am an existing member. I still have an awful lot of weight to lose. If anybody could help me and fill in my knowledge gaps then that would be fantastic!

Hope everybodies well and managing to stick to the plan :p

I had a 12 week prescription for SW from my doctor, in Birmingham they do that! You just go and ask if they do it & can they give you a voucher, they get in touch with another department who send you the voucher, you take it to your local SW class and that's it. You also get a phone call telling you that they expect you to stick to it!

It depends on your local health board But I know that the trial was not that successful as they found that as the people were getting classes for free the majority were not taking it seriously ! As they had not got their head into gear It the case of you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink!

I was wondering if anyone had any idea what would happen in my situation where I have already joined slimming world, could I still get the prescription and have it added to my membership? I don't want to have to rejoin!

Thank you for all your wonderful replies though!

I believe it is not possible if you are an existing member but your practice would be the place to enquire as what is offered varies a lot from place to place. It is not offered at all in Scotland as far as I know, some practices may offer exercise on prescription or referral to WW or a local weight loss initiative instead.

if your BMI is over 30 you should be able to get the vouchers if your local health authority is doing the scheme..

it may be that you don't mention that you've already started at a group and then have a word with your consultant before you apply to see if they are willing to "bend" the rules.. ours does..

as long as you meet the targets they set ( not unreasonable or impossible btw ) then you can often get another set of vouchers when your current ones run out..( as long as your BMI is still over 30 at the time )

I had 4 sets of vouchers from our GP, but then I had lots to lose..

I went to my doctor last Tuesday and was firmly told I needed to lose weight and join slimming world I asked if she could prescribe me for the 13 weeks free and was told its not available in my area and its only £5 that's £5 less to spend on food!! If its not available in my area fair enough but if I'm able to get a prescription as my BMI is 51 I will be very annoyed! :( xxx

Have just got back from swimming world and there was a new person who had a doctors referral so I now know for a fact that it is done in my area! And like ColJack said, my consultant said not to mention to the consultant that I have already started and they should be able to sort it out for me :D
