SnS and surgery

TrueBlueAngel

I WILL be thin!!
I have to go into hospital on Wednesday for surgery and have no idea if I should continue with SnS prior to going in. I doubt I'll feel up to restarting til a few days after surgery but that's OK. I've strong willpower. Anyone got any advice what I should do before going into hospital??
Thanks

I think you will find you haven't got to be in ketosis if going under a general anaesthetic.

I know I'll have a couple of drips and I believe dextrose might be in them so chances are I'll wake up out of ketosis and with a Carb hangover. Not really worth staying in ketosis. I'll feel awful as it is. I'll have to accept that I'll be off plan for a few days. Hospital food won't be great but I'll try and stick to low Cal/Carb foods. All this effort just to put some back on. Still, I've got good willpower when I need to start again asap.

I came off 6-8 weeks before surgery. Give your surgeon a ring and get some professional advice

You haven't got long so I would come off and stick to healing diet post op

Thanks, never thought to but have emailed them now. But, realistically, I might have to come off plan the day before. I'm dreading a weight gain.

Unsure what surgery it is for can only say what I did.

I focused on giving my body the best tools for healing beforehand and then for 12 weeks after - High protein, dark greens, vitamin c rich foods and wholegrains

You only get one chance to heal :)

Got an answer from Rob at SnS. This is what he said.

' Yes they will certainly be carb rich. (I asked about the intravenous drips)

I'm guessing Nil by mouth from night before?

You still need to be out of ketosis for the op, so I would say you need to come off the plan 72 hours prior to the operation to allow you to come out of ketosis enough so that you dont go straight back into ketosis after only 1 nights fasting.

Eat a healthy standard diet and avoid empty calories sweets/junk etc.

After the operation you need to ask the doctor the recovery period and ensure to await the period before resuming the plan. Your body will be under trauma from the operation you don't want to add to that by restricting calories.'

Gutted as this means I need to come off SnS tomorrow. But at least I have an answer. Hope this helps anyone in the future.

Interesting. Why do you need to be out of ketosis? I mean realistically anyone of us could need immediate surgery in an emergency situation and be one this diet at the time :-/

I really couldn't say but I've asked for the advice and got it, whether or not I'm happy with it. And given the drips will kick me out of ketosis, I'd rather be out of ketosis before then or I'll feel worse and knowing my reaction after this particular surgery I'm having, I could really do without it.

I believe being in ketosis would delay healing time due to the energy your body will need to repair itself post surgery. As for during the op again your body will be undergoing trauma which will put more of a strain on your remaining glycogen stores so they need to be fuller hence why it is good to come out of ketosis a few days beforehand. They won't generally put you under anesthetic if your blood sugars are low (which there is a possibility of them being on this) and so you won't usually have a dextrose drip. Often they use Hartmanns which is lactose, or if you're diabetic, sodium chloride. Obviously lactose is a sugar so would probably bring you out of ketosis anyway. As for if you needed emergency surgery then obviously there wouldn't be much choice in the matter but if you have the opportunity it's best to give your body the best chance of healing correctly.
