Sodium on VLCD?

Hi Guys,

I'm doing W8 but for the moment their snack bars are "out of stock" so as i used them regularly my consultant told me of an alternative protein bar to use in the meantime.

Me & my mum both used them this week and we both lost nothing, our weight has stayed the same and the only change was the bars. They are the same Cals as our usual bars & even lower in carbs so we can't work it out but I've just realised they are quite high in sodium 340mg per bar compared to 140mg in our normal W8 snack bars so could this be the problem?

Could a higher amount of sodium/salt cause us to not loss weight?

I might be totally wrong but it's just a coincidence the only week I don't lose on W8 is the week I start using the protein bars :(

Extra salt could cause you to retain water - perhaps that's the problem?

ermmm.... i realise this is an old thread but i wana kinda clear it up. Excess salt does retain fluid but we're talking in terms of grams! when you then overload the normal methods of control, the small differences in that change would be compensated for in the body, there is a wide range that is fine and then over/under that massively is a problem.

Thanks Podgyman,

The original post was mine.....

I have been doing the W8 diet for 5 weeks now, the 3wks I didn't touch the protein bars I lost 7lbs, 5lbs, 3lbs and the 2 wks I have used them I have lost 0lbs & 1lb so I'm pretty sure now the bars are the problem but I can't figure out why so I have just stopped using them altogether this week so hopefully I will loss some weight :)

well, i would ask if you have lost inches or anything on those weeks? i mean regardless of salt content, you are having negative amounts of calories so you should still be losing weight, it might be that there is something about them that caused a blip? but tbh i wouldn't worry just keep up the good work lass!
