Some questions

Hi there,

I'm a newbie here and I've been doing the Slim n Save diet for the last month with great results but there are a couple of questions that have been niggling me and you all seem like such a friendly bunch so I was hoping you might be able to help.

I did the Cambridge diet a few years ago and lost about 3 stone, but very quickly went back to my old pattern of overeating. I've done alot of soul searching about why I overeat and am feeling very determined now that my motivations for eating well have changed since last time. I know that the real test is maintaining but I do feel in a different place to last time.

The things that are bothering me are that as i'm doing 4 packs and veg allowance, how am I getting the recommended vitamins when the packs tend to offer only 20% rda. Surely that means i'm missing 20% each day? On the website it says that you don't needed to supplement with a multivitamin if you are on 4 packs.

The other thing that is bothering me is that would the vitamins not be destroyed in the microwave? Cambridge diet didn't recommend heating the packs as it would destroy the vitamins, so how it's this different?

I'm just a little concerned as although I love the meal packs, i'm a little worried about the testing they have had. As the company is quite new it doesn't have the statistics perhaps to back it up like some of the older food replacement diets.

I'm saying this also because i'm feeling a bit rundown at the moment and have been having some tingling pains in my feet, hands and pains in my boobs which can be a symptom of nerve damage from vitamin deficiency which has worried me a bit. I guess it could also be from other things too and I will see a doctor if it continues.

Like I said previously apart from this issue i'm actually really enjoying this diet and am finding it a lot easier to stick to with good results, so I hope that i'm just missing something so that I can carry on until I reach my goal weight. However I just wanted to know if anyone else here has had these questions answered for peace of mind.

Thanks

Hey minibum, sorry I cannot help with your questions but I was just wondering where you saw about the 20% RDA of vits in each pack? is it on the website? That's one of the things I dislike about S&S is the packs are just plain packaging, unlike the exante ones which have all the nutritional info and vits on the back of each pack

The other thing that is bothering me is that would the vitamins not be destroyed in the microwave? Cambridge diet didn't recommend heating the packs as it would destroy the vitamins, so how it's this different?

I have actually been wondering the exact same thing too for the past few days...

Hopefully someone can answer your questions soon. It might also be worth emailing S&S themselves to see what they say.

Food packs are totally different to shakes. The rules for preparation are different. Just because cd say don't zap the shakes doesn't mean that's the same for all diets.

Just because the company is new doesn't mean you cant have faith in the diet - Cambridge was new once too :)

The packs have 25% of you rda so having 4 means your having 100% :) hope this helps. About the microwaving thing I can't help you I used to do CD too so at first I was a bit dubious however I got on with it and have felt fine. If your worried then take a multi vit too. Also the advisors are super friendly go on the online help bit amd ask and I'm sure they will be able to tell you x

LL also have packs which you can microwave and other packs which you can't. They are made differently and tested so don't worry.

Thanks very much for your replies. I know i probably sound like a bit of a hypochondriac, but whichever way you look at it this diet is restrictive and relying on vitamins and minerals in powder form can't be as beneficial as eating the 'real' thing, hence the hair thinning etc.. Nevertheless, I do feel the long term health benefits of losing weight outway the temporary lack of optimum nutrition, so I'm happy for now. I am not sure where I got the 20% rda from. I thought i saw it on the nutritional forms on the website, but it doesn't appear there when I just looked. I think when you are feeling a bit poorly you can question the diet a bit as you feel in need of a bit of comfort that you used to get from food!

Maybe it's the bars you're talking about? I have a recollection that they might not have 25% RDA in all cases. That's why S&S tell you not to have more than 1 a day I believe. If you are having veg too there will be some good nutrients in that too. Veggies are actually very good for you and getting used to eating those is a good step towards maintenance. I think if you're really concerned you should perhaps pick the packs that add up to the amounts you want to see. Personally I've been on the diet quite a few months and have seen no downsides, just the positive benefits from losing weight.

Also, if this is a worry for you you could choose to take a multivitamin too. Probably not necessary and unlikely to make a difference but if it gives you more confidence then worth doing. However, if you do this then I would suggest using a pregnancy multivitamin as they don't contain any vitamin A and too much vitamin A is actually quite bad for you.
