Thinking of starting... Just one question!

Hey everyone,

I was diverted to this part of the site by Kelly (thanks! :) ) and am very tempted to try it out.

However, I live in a very big house hold and we all have dinner together. Don't want everyone to know that I am trying a VLCD diet as there would be a lot of negative things said etc. Do you think if i had slim and save for breakfast, Lunch and snack... and was then careful with dinner... that I would still loose a lot? Obviously not as fast as if I did it 100%.

Sorry for the question!

Well Slim and Save have a veg allowance and 2 mealpacks that are like 'proper' food; spag bol and cottage pie. Maybe you could have one of those and the allowed vegetables and not let on that it's a VLCD? Or do you have to eat what the household eats? If so then if you have carbs (including potato, rice, pasta, certain veggies, bread) then this diet will not really work for you I think.

Well basically someone cooks dinner and we all then eat as a big family what ever is eaten. I could sometimes go without say potatoes etc but there are times when I wont be able to not eat the meal... if you get what I mean. :-/

I want to do something like this without making it obvious that I am! Work is fine... its just at home that will be the problem.

Would they not support you in your quest to lose weight? I think I'd broach the subject and see what the reaction was. Maybe you could say calorie controlled rather than VLCD? Guess it depends how old you are. If you're under 18 then obviously your parents would have a say, if not then my reaction would be, my life, my choice. You could maybe position it that you'll still eat with them but you would need to prepare your own food?

Failing that then unless you can avoid the carbs then maybe something like WW would be better for you, as a VLCD diet is supposed to be just that, and only really works when carbs are restricted. 3 packs plus a meal containing more than a moderate amount of carbs would not be within the ethos of the diet and I don't think you'd get the results you would be looking for.

Haha Dont worry! I'm 25 so don't need to ask anyones permission to do anything!

I think its just the stigma that is attached to a VLCD that worries me... There are certain individuals in the household who, if i failed, would love to say I told you so. That and my financial situation isn't great... so only having 2 out of 3 meals S&S is cheaper in the long run.

I dunno. :( I really just want something to kick start my weight loss! Thought that it would be the easiest option. Meh.

Ha, that would just make me even more determined not to fail :). I don't think that 2 packs and a meal is recommended on S&S but something like Slimfast (although the amount of sugar the Slimfast shakes contain horrifies me!) or Tesco Ultraslim that include a healthy meal may be good options for you?

If you're going o do a VLCD you need to do it properly and have the correct number of packs

I dont agree , if you want to do slim and save for breakfast lunch and snack then have a high protein , low carb dinner you will still lose weight , it will just be slower

Do the plan however you want to

Go for the protein and avoid whatever carbs are on offer ie potatoes , rice, bread and pasta and try to have the vegetables that are on the allowed list

Phoenix, I read it that the OP wouldn't always be able to avoid carbs in the evening meal - so if it was lasagne for example she'd have to eat the pasta, and if the veggies served up were carrot and peas she would have to have those. I don't think a ketogenic diet is a plan you're going to be able to do successfully if you can't plan what you intend to eat in the evening yourself whether it's a VLCD ketogenic diet or something like Atkins.

That's how I read it too. She's not going to be able to get into ketosis or anything. Eating a potentially carb heavy meal is going to completely affect her weight loss. There seems little point in having 2 shakes a day if youre going to really damage your weight loss when WW or SW would probably give the same kind of loss but be far more family friendly

Oooh.. :/ I hope I haven't started an argument here?

I emailed Rob to see what the 'official' answer is and he basically told me that Yes I would still loose weight if i only had 2 out of 3... BUT because I wouldn't be going into ketoise (sorry unsure of spelling) I would be hungry all of the time and which would make this sort of thing very difficult to follow.

Have to admit... being hungry all the time does not appeal to me very much! :/

:( Meh... I think I was looking for a quick fix idea.

My boyfriend and I tried SW but found the pre planning of the meals too difficult. (Again because we are living with his family and have little control of what's cooked.) Although to be fair on them they did try to keep to slimming world rules.

What exactly is this ketosis that everyone is talking about?

A VLCD only works if you do it properly which means packs only or some of them have higher programmed but again you have to have all your packs plus food. If you're eating you have to ensure it's a small amount of high protein very low carbs food. Ketosis is when you're on a diet like this your body starts burning fat. It also means that you won't be hungry, your energy levels increase and basically you can function on such a low calorie intake

These diets are successful but it's cos they're strict. You really can't do them half heartedly.

I'd say you need to decide what YOU want. Either bite the bullet and tell your family what youre doing - surely they'll be supportive? If not then you need to accept a VLCD isn't the right diet for you at the moment

I agree , I think if other people are having such a strong influence on what you eat then you need to look at other options

To do something like slim and save you have to be very determined and single minded , ie strong enough to stand up to other people telling you what you can and cannot eat

But any plan that sees you eating carb heavy meals is going to be a slow way to lose the pounds

Good luck whatever you decide is right for you

Hmmmm interesting thread.... Wonder what happened next.....

From the more recent postings looks like she might be giving SW a go. Probably more appropriate to her situation.

Each to there own, as they say, doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get there in the end

Yeah, but I'm the impatient sort and need something fast which is why this works better for me :)
