A Bit of a Ramble
Ok Guys, I'm in the mood for a bit of a ramble - no, no, not the walking type, although I am rather partial to a nice walk in the countryside or by the sea. No, this is a ramble of the brain - "that's not like Gem", you may exclaim!
Well, as hardened ear bent readers may remember, I went back to work last week on a phased return starting with 2 days a week etc. Well the mentoring staff have a new office. In it is crammed 3 desks, 1 phone, a computer with a massive virus, 2 large bent venetian blinds to hide the bars on the window, a grotty sink unit and a
left handed clock.
Just when you thought life couldn't get any more confusing - the clock is going backwards and try as I may I just can't stop trying to attribute clockwise to its anti-clockwise ways.
The window that runs the length of the room looks out on the playground towards several well established trees with the smoking shelter (like a bus shelter with a corrugated roof) along to the right past the netless goal post. There are high metal fences all round the grounds and gates with padlocks, which sometimes succeed in keeping those who belong in and those who don't out.
The grafitti on the walls is a mixture of Art and visual assault and is a reflection of the culture embraced by the young people in the school.
The kids I work with range from 12 - 16 and are loud and in your face. Paradoxically (? is that really a word?) they are both streetwise and vulnerable, they are horrendous and wonderful - all at the same time. Many are angry quite a lot of the time and I have learned to dodge flying chairs and other misiles over the years.
At intervals during the day the ear splitting sound of the "bell" (modified from the alarm system) alert us to startings and endings of lessons.
When I went off work in April things were really bad and it sounds as though they maybe got worse before changes began to occur. Since I have been back I have noticed a great improvement which can only be good news for the staff and students alike.
So far no-one has called me a fat f*****g ugly wh**e or a fat anything else which is a bonus and I even sat in the dining room with my back to some of the kids (I usually sit with back to the wall so that I can see the objects coming towards me).
I worked 1 to 1 with a young man this morning and taught him some chords on the guitar. He was really chuffed. I guess I am beginning to remember why I wanted to work with these kids in the first place
