How was your break with your family? Meet anyone worth typing about?

well well well, new people eh? theyve clearly missed out, what with me not being about. ;)

lol no, i just wasnt eating as much, keeping away from the chips that everyone was trying to feed me, having the odd more-frequent-than-usual-in-a-diet treat and NOT STOPPING lol. im quite happy. cant wait to get back down to it though. i think ill drive to the swimming pool in a bit and pick up the timetable...

hows are you all doing?

Still Here despite the BIG BANG!!

Well we're all still here then - despite the Big Bang - in fact it's even catapulted Elle back into our midst - Quite right too (clicking of with the red shoes for all that time - how rude!) :D Welcome back Elle :D and well done for keeping the weight down - I'm impressed.

Taz - That's what I always tell myself when the kids at school call me wonderful names and tell me to F*** right off or some such - it's not personal - but sometimes it feels a little personal, especially if you're not feeling your best. Right at the moment I am taking it all in my stride though - sometimes it is very funny and it's hard not to laugh :)

Claire - I'm glad I wasn't on the train with you I get alergic reactions to Lynx being sprayed around - not too pleasant

Jenn - I just knew you were busy doing the Domestic Goddess bit :)

Silence - So maybe we are not all gonna perish in the cause of particle science after all :D

Tyn - Bet you can't wait to get started on all that studying - pity you gotta go through all that eating drinking and being merry first - I feel so sorry for you :D

Well I've survived week 2 back at work and met most of the kids at some point in the last 2 days. In the next couple of months the LEA will feed more kids into the unit and we will pick up more "out of school" kids to work with, that's when things really begin to hot up.

I've got 4 days off now :) and then next week I'm in for 3 days.

Dinner to cook now so will be back later. x

Martyn,

Hubby suggests that you unplug as much as you can inside the machine – except for one hard drive (the one with the operating system installed), the video card, and that’s it. Then remove as much ram as possible, if you have 4 ram modules, remove 2 of them. Then try rebooting the machine. If it works at that point, turn off the machine and insert the remaining ram, then try to start up again. If it fails after adding the remaining ram then it’s either because the ram is faulty or because the ram timing settings in the bios are too aggressive, which means the timings should be reduced or the voltage increased (the latter is dangerous and could damage the ram). If everything works with all of the ram, then try connecting the other components (e.g. additional hard drives, sound cards, additional video cards in SLI mode, cdrom drives, dvd drives, etc) one at a time with a restart between each. That way you go systematically through and eliminate everything from the problems list.

If at any point the machine stops working you are either dealing with a faulty part or, more likely, you have simply exceeded the capacity of your power supply. This is very, very common when building machines with cutting edge video cards such as GEForce9800; especially when using two in SLI mode.

Best of luck with your PC!

tyn.....funny enough that is what OH said too....said you probably have too much on your comp compared to your power supply....people do it all the time. Remember to earth yourself when handling everything.

A Bit of a Ramble

Ok Guys, I'm in the mood for a bit of a ramble - no, no, not the walking type, although I am rather partial to a nice walk in the countryside or by the sea. No, this is a ramble of the brain - "that's not like Gem", you may exclaim!

Well, as hardened ear bent readers may remember, I went back to work last week on a phased return starting with 2 days a week etc. Well the mentoring staff have a new office. In it is crammed 3 desks, 1 phone, a computer with a massive virus, 2 large bent venetian blinds to hide the bars on the window, a grotty sink unit and a left handed clock.

Just when you thought life couldn't get any more confusing - the clock is going backwards and try as I may I just can't stop trying to attribute clockwise to its anti-clockwise ways.

The window that runs the length of the room looks out on the playground towards several well established trees with the smoking shelter (like a bus shelter with a corrugated roof) along to the right past the netless goal post. There are high metal fences all round the grounds and gates with padlocks, which sometimes succeed in keeping those who belong in and those who don't out.

The grafitti on the walls is a mixture of Art and visual assault and is a reflection of the culture embraced by the young people in the school.

The kids I work with range from 12 - 16 and are loud and in your face. Paradoxically (? is that really a word?) they are both streetwise and vulnerable, they are horrendous and wonderful - all at the same time. Many are angry quite a lot of the time and I have learned to dodge flying chairs and other misiles over the years.

At intervals during the day the ear splitting sound of the "bell" (modified from the alarm system) alert us to startings and endings of lessons.

When I went off work in April things were really bad and it sounds as though they maybe got worse before changes began to occur. Since I have been back I have noticed a great improvement which can only be good news for the staff and students alike.

So far no-one has called me a fat f*****g ugly wh**e or a fat anything else which is a bonus and I even sat in the dining room with my back to some of the kids (I usually sit with back to the wall so that I can see the objects coming towards me).

I worked 1 to 1 with a young man this morning and taught him some chords on the guitar. He was really chuffed. I guess I am beginning to remember why I wanted to work with these kids in the first place :) x

Hey now, don't diss the left handed clock! I am left handed and I was amazed when I saw lefty products. Scissors, rulers, fountain pens, clocks. I remember when I got my first left handed cheque book my mum laughed at me saying it was a gimmick and just generally found it amusing. One day I asked her to pay in some money for me and sent her off to the bank with my cheque book to use one of the paying in slips in the back. She had trouble writing on the slip as the spine of the book was getting in the way of her writing hand and she said "This is a pain, why do you have to be so awkward?" And I replied "Now you know what it is like for us to use a right handed one." I swear I could see that light switch on in her head as she suddenly realised that being a lefty didn't just mean that I write with a different hand!

I worked with a child when I was going round to different schools who I was told sprawled and invaded other peoples space. The teacher hadn't even realised he was a lefty and put him on the right of his neighbour who was right handed - hence the clash of space. You would be surprised how many teachers have no idea which pupils are left handed and how to overcome the issues arising. x

I tried to do that, all i have in my new computer is x2 1gbRAM, 1 graphics card (Geforce 8800GT 512mb), 1 HD and 1 optical drive, i don't have anything extra in it, and tried to do it without the graphics card, and tried to do it with only 1 stick of ram and it was the same story.

I press the power button, there is a strange click sound, the power light flashes on, then makes the power down sound, and then restarts. Inside the fans rotate just once, maybe twice, and then stop, it waits for a few seconds and then tries to start up again without me pressing the power button.

I hope either of them have some idea, because other than the PSU is fried, i am clueless lol. I got my returns number and freepost thing today, so going to go post it tomorrow morning/afternoon, unless either of your over halves have any ideas!

Its bloody annoying thats for sure! lol. I have a new game for it, and i can't play it! I have until Thursday morning before it officially starts (Its an MMO) before i start to get REALLY annoyed lol.

On another note, does anyone know roughly how long it takes for Sky to come and connect you to the TV/Internet after you sign up with them? I am going to do it on either Friday or Monday when my Student Loan comes in (stupid dentist taking my instalation fee!) We are all mildly computer geeks who love our internet, so will be slightly insane driving without it! lol

Ohhh!!

And welcome home Smelly Elle!!!

Hope you had a good holiday you smelly person!!!

Well, I will mail my hubby about it and see what he suggests. I'm in a series of meetings until around 2pm today so I'll do my best to get you an answer.

As to the game comment that I am highlighting...it's not warhammer online, is it? Tell me it's not. Play Age of Conan, it's so much better in the graphics department. I beta tested for Warhammer Online and I just really didn't like it.

Gem - I'm thoroughly disappointed... they didn't even TRY to make the big bang yesterday they just switched the LHC machine on to warm it up and get it working!!!

Have a nice day everyone!
