Try googling couch to 5k as I think I remember that being a good program. It's a case of taking it slowly and doing run/walk and gradually increasing the running part. I think you are only supposed to increase your distances by 10% each week. If you book in a charity 5k in a few months time, that will give you the added incentive to keep it going.
I went to Sweatshop to get my shoes and they have you running over a sensor to see what your gait is like. They were fantastic and took back a pair of shoes that they had sold me as they hurt my feet and promptly replaced them with a better pair. Very apologetic as well!
