Licking the Lid of Life....my esoteric diary

It's the first time I have had one too. Whatever is in it is going with my dinner tonight so it's like pot luck!

So today I'm roasting Kholrabi from my veg box. Could be interesting. I suspect its going to go one of two ways!! I'm having that and lightly sautéed summer greens, new baby carrots and maybe a quorn grill or I have a home created bean bake thingy in the freezer.

We went to the cinema last night which was our first night out in...oh...7 months? So yes I had snacks and when we came out Pizza Hut called but, get this, we both had something from the under 500kcal menu which was really really nice and came with a side of rocket baby cherry tomatoes. So now I actually feel pretty virtuous. Back in the day that kind ofan evening would have been license to go mad and would probably have spilled over into today too. I already have my soup made and my dinner planned. I feel I have come a long way!

Yay to the night out and the saintly choices! Had to look up kohlrab! Enjoy

Yes me too!! I googled how to cook it and the simplest was roasting! I've already made a free marinade for the summer greens so will use some EVOO from my HEXBs for that and the kohlrabi. Should be either lovely or revolting haha.

I love kohlrabi :) My ex father in law used to grow it but it's hard to find in the shops so I haven't had it for ages. It's nice just steamed and tossed lightly in lemon juice (I've never roasted it)

Ah it appeared in my veg box. I've kept half back so if roasting doesn't work I'll try steaming :)

Hey Sheila :) good thanks, you? Good BH weekend? X

How have they gone for you? Its funny, I was ardent EE until going veggie now I love green. That extra HEXB makes a world of difference although I rarely use the extra hex a.

I had my kohlrabi last night. It was ok. I roasted it with some carrots in half a spoon of olive oil and some salt and pepper. It meant I didn't miss my potato :) so I wouldn't be adverse to having it again.

One thing that was delicious was the summer green. I created a marinade from chilli, garlic, juice if half a lemon and half a lime and a slug of soy sauce. Put my other half a spoon of oil in a lidded saucepan with some mustard seeds and cumin, added the marinade. Added the shredded green with some spring onion and some red onion and stirred it up. Lid on, heat down and let it sweat. It was blimmin GORGEOUS. If the idea of having the boxes was to try something new, well I've achieved that!!!

Kohlrabi!!!! I miss it so much! It was a staple vegetable where I grew up but moving to Britain I couldn't find it anywhere. I once saw teeny tiny ones, size of small apples, in an organic veg shop and one kohlrabi was something like £1.50!!! So I didn't bother. I used to eat them raw a lot, they are amazing shredded with carrots and some fresh chopped herbs. *yearn*

Aha a nostalgia trip. I feel the same about opal fruits. Just as impossible to find but less good with carrots. One would imagine.

Hi Sam

Ive done my 3rd Red Day today - and I have to admit ive missed my potatoes and rice  I couldnt do 7 days a week for life though. x

I tried a red day when doing EE and before giving up meat and I wasn't keen and found it too restrictive. Funny how I wouldn't say that same about green now though so maybe it's just what you are used to.

I made a discovery this morning. I have been inadvertently adding syns, I reckon around 5-7 to my daily intake by taking flaxseed oil capsules. Because they have no nutritional value on them I was just popping two a day, every day. AND I bought some milled flaxseed for the same reasons. Only in passing registering that it had a kcal content. Linseed oil is treated to the same value of any other oil and with the milled stuff I have definitely been going over my syns! I reckon the capsules alone probably don't amount to much at 500mg each. That's what, half a gram? Linseed oil is 2 syns per teaspoon which is 5g so at most its half a syn. But the sprinkles stuff really really adds up! Im
so silly. No wonder I've been feeling confused. So virtuous and yet so blimmin stuck!!!!

Another poll: tomorrow night I join a group. My weight will naturally increase because I'm going from weighing in at home in the nuddy in the morning, after a wee (and a poo if I can manage it) to weighing in the evening, fully clothed. I'm naturally going to show a gain (reckon about 5lb). Do I adjust my stats on here to a start weight of whatever the increase is tomorrow so I keep my actual weight lost correct or do I just record a gain and go from there? What would you do??

Personally I'd adjust my stats, which way are you swaying?

Hi Michelle, I'm thinking the same tbh but wasn't sure if it would be considered cheating. But then when I weighed 17 I would have weighed that + whatever in the evening had a joined a group from the off I suppose.

I've just ordered some milled flaxseed for the health benefits. According to syns omline,25g is 6.5 syns which is a lot but suppose it's a healthier way of using them.

Good luck at group.

You might find you are pleasantly surprised at weigh-in. I weigh in the evenings, but before I have my evening meal. I wear my lightest possible clothes (leggings and a thin top), and always visit the loo before I hop on the scales. I'm generally about 2 pounds heavier than I am in the mornings.

If you've not been to a group before you might also be amused at the antics of people before weighing - people in my group remove cardigans, belts, necklaces, scarves, socks and more - I once saw a very desperate woman remove her wedding ring!
