Hi guys,

ive been browsing for afew days now and have decided to take the plunge and a)say hello!! and b) start slimming world tomorrow!! (well the actual group been doing afew bits ive picked up through googling so far!!).

So.. guess i should start with a little bit about myself.. I currently weigh (according to my scales) 14st3, a size 18 and 5ft5. i work as a nurse and am in a stressful job which tends to result in comfort eating and stress eating. i love my food- which i guess is why ive decided on slimming world.

Ive got a couple of questions which hopefully youll be able to help me with :)

1) Im a type 1 insulin dependant diabetic which to be honest isnt brilliantly controlled (22 now diagnosed at 4 = teenage resentment). will this effect how slimming world works?

2) goals - whats the best way of setting these?

3) i work 4x 12.5hour shifts a week and our employer supplies us meals; generally this is homemade soup and bread for lunch, and plenty of options for tea (full meals/jackets/salads) but its lunch that concerns me- will i be able to eat it or should i avoid?? how does this work??

4) i work a very adhoc shift pattern, and cant guarentee i can make the meetings every week? does anyone have any experiance of this? how would it work?

i think thats it for now :D
Thank you for your help guys and Helloooooo :D

Hello and welcome I will try and answer your questions

1) many people do sw with diabetes mention it to your consultant when you join and I think they will give you a book
http://mobile.slimmingworld.com/features/view-feature/diabetes
Thus is a link to the web page

2) thus is up to you but I do mine like this
Half stone
Getting in the next stone bracket
Stone
They give you an aim of losing 10% of your body weight as an intermediate goal.
You can decide your target but also you dint need to set it when you first join

3) the home made soup may be difficult it depends if you know have an idea how they cook it. If they use oil then you can syn it but if there is cream then that would be a lot of syns. If it's white bread then I would suggest taking in your healthy extra of whole meal bread
Other option is to speak to them about using fry light instead if oil depends on your work situation, practicality and realationship

4) once you are are a sw member you can attend any class so say you join on a Monday this week but next week you can only go wed am that's fine, but you can only go to one meeting a week. Again if you speak to your consultant when you join they can put you down as a shift worker so you can just let her know if you can't make it due to work. The only thing is you can't buy a countdown where you buy 5 or 10 weeks and get two free, as these rely in you going to a group every week.

Good luck with your journey

I was recently diagnosed type 2 diabetic, and have been doing a lot of research about the best way to combine sensible eating for the diabetes and doing SW.

There are some odd anomalies in the advice generally given to "new" diabetics about carbohydrates - on the one hand one is told that carbohydrates covert to sugar and this is a problem, on the other hand most of the dietary advice offered seems to include a lot of carbohydrate in meals.

So what I have decided to do is to give up bread, potatoes, and pasta completely, and mainly follow the "red" plan. I am also eating more vegetables and much less fruit.

I should stress that I am not advising people to do the same, just saying what I am doing.

Hi Lucy,

I'm type 1 as well, diagnosed 5 years and control is so-so. I've been following SW on and off from home since 2011 and I've found when I stick to plan my control is better.
When I stuck to plan 100% I lost nearly 4stone but I've put most of it back on by messing around and eating junk ?

Do you carb count to work out your bolus doses or are you on fixed doses? I know some people say SW can be carb heavy but ultimately it depends on what you choose to eat.
If you don't currently carb count try asking your GP about attending a DAFNE course as it makes things so much easier x

Hi hun, firstly welcome to Slimming world.

1. I am pretty sure your consultant should have a leaflet about Diabetes. But actually SW would be perfect because you know that you should avoid high sugar food and simple carbs and try to have complex carbs, protein and a good supply of fruit and veg and this all fits in perfectly with SW. Just to try keep it as controlled as possible, eat regular, test regular, have the right amount of insulin etc etc but you know all that.

2. I have an ultimate goal in mind, but I work to half stone goals as you get bling (sticker and certificate) for every half stone you lose, that makes it more manageable in my mind.

3. I think planning is the key really, the soup probably wouldn't be too bad but the bread may or may not be a healthy extra B? Jacket potatoes and salads would perfect for dinner, but obviously without high synned fillings or dressings. If you are able to could you actually prepare your own food and take it in, although I guess why should you went you are provided with food at work??? The thing is here is to read and re-read your books until they "click" into place then you choose your food from work that will be on plan.

4. I'm not sure about this but I guess you could where necessary go to other classes to fit in with your working patterns.

Good luck x
