Starting Primal

Hi everyone
I thought I should start a diary cos I been loitering over here for a while now :) I'm not new to the forum as I have a diary in the JUDDD section and have been IF since January. Prior to that I was doing SW. I've been here primarily for weight loss but as time as gone on and I've got nearer goal, I'm looking for a healthier way to eat and live too. SW was a carb fest my body could do without and towards the end I was feeling bloated, sluggish and ill but, weirdly, hungry all the time. I now know why. My kidney function was bad and as I only have one that's not great news. I decided to start IF and started to feel much better - possible cos I was only eating grains every other day lol. I read Wheatbelly which was a revelation then some friends of mine started eating the Paleo way. I must be honest I thought they gone daft :) However after a bit of research I bought a massive recipe book online, looked at it and decided I couldn't do it at that time. I was still carb and grain addicted and listening to the cw that protein is bad for ailing kidneys. I've decided now it isn't protein that's the baddy it's sugar. I have no idea what my GP will make of this but if my bloods come back better next time they are tested then I will know.

I've started slow. I gave up pasta in January and drastically cut down on my sugar intake. I stepped up my meat eating. Eating fat was hard after being conditioned for years into believing it is bad fat but I've taken to it like a duck to water. Another forum member put me on to Marks Daily Apple and I read the site over the last few days for hours.

Now I'm off all grains and sugar and enjoying meat, fish and eggs and some veg and salad. I don't miss bread but I thought I would and have been experimenting with coconut flour to make tasty snacks. The first few days were hard and I had jelly baby cravings but they've gone now. Sorry this is so long. :)

Hey Ladybird! I've been loitering here too lol x

I've lost a stone on WW but am exercising like mad and wanted a really healthy plan as you can eat so much rubbish on WW. I had my first day today, a smoothie, tuna and egg salad for lunch and some sweet potato with carrot and a pork steak for tea... I actually had full fat coconut milk and used oil!! Weird!

Hoping this plan makes me fe really energized, thinking I may mix Paleo and primal .. See how I go x

Will you still fast? X

Great to see you :) xx

Hi Welshmamma - I'm really pleased you are here too. We can loiter together lol. :) Ikwym about eating rubbish. My UD's turned into a how much chocolate and junk can I get down in 24 hours race. Not good. I've not been fasting properly since I had pnuemonia tbh. Just found it way too hard and decided to listen to my body. I'm hoping to get back to it for 2 days a week once I 'm fully recovered. I've only been eating Primal for 2 weeks but already feel more energised and calmer. I didn't at first tho. I felt a bit strange but it passed. I can't get over the oil I'm using in cooking. It's brilliant and I actually feel full. I'm finding I only need one biggish meal a day now. I've just been looking up how to make my own coconut butter. OMG I sound like an old hippy! :) Great to see you too xx

Thanks Cavegirl. So far so good and the scales are finally going down after sts for weeks. Good luck with getting back on the wagon. :) x

I'm loving it and feel really full up for ages although my meals aren't huge! I've had a banana pancake today which was just two eggs, cinammon and a banana. It was really nice and I've been full for three hours! Lol x x
Didn't realise you had been poorly, pneumonia will really take it out of you x hope your feeling better and hopefully decent food will help your body recover xxx

It's great. I had two low carb sausages, ( Tescos Finest cumberland 4.6 g carbs for 2) some mushrooms and an egg for breakfast. Just scoffed some muffins I made with coconut flour and am stuffed. I doubt I will have anything else today now even tho I have a gorgeous Thai red curry lined up for tea. Yes I was ill for about a month, actually in bed, so it was bad this time. I'm miles better now tho as long as I take it steady. xx

Wow ! Go you :)

following primal blueprint and 5:2 /4:3 fasting plan

If you'd seen the mess I made you might not be so impressed. There's dessicated coconut and butter from end to end. The coconut bits are stuck in the kitchen floor and I used every pan in the house filtering the ghee. lol

Think I over did the muffins I made. I have crippling stomach ache now. I know I'm not sensitive to coconut so the only variable was the honey. It wasn't raw cos I don't have any yet ( on it's way) so had sugar in it. Anyone else get stomach ache when eating sugar after stopping it for a while?

That made me giggle! But. Bet the coconut butter is Devine :)

Hi and welcome. :)

Coconut flour is very high fibre so can give tummy issues if you're not used to it. If you start small and acclimatise yourself it should be better.

Sounds like you're doing really well; excellent that you're making your own bits and bobs. :)

Yes I think that is. I didn't exactly start small. :D Thanks. I'll know for next time not to eat them all at once. With the price of ghee and coconut butter I thought it worth giving it a go. xx

I know what you mean! Homemade almond butter is also much cheaper and really tasty. :)

Oooh could you give us the recipe please Plumfoodie? :)

Dead simple, roast 2 cups of almonds for 10 minutes or so, until warm and smelling toasty but not browning too much. Tip into food processor or blender whilst warm - if using something other than a vitamix you can add melted coconut oil as well to help things along if you like. Blend and blend until it turns into butter (as with coconut butter). You can add flavourings; I usually add a pinch of salt, but cinnamon or cocoa powder with a little maple syrup are nice for a treat. :)
