Yet another Facebook Topic ..........

fillymum

synful soul
Those who know me know I am not a fan of Facebook. Paul however has a Facebook account that I sometimes pop onto if I am looking for someone in particular or to see my sisters Puppy Love link.

I went on this morning and was quite shocked by what I saw in the adverts down the right hand side of the page.

There was an advertisment for "The Hottest Singles Site on the WWW"...nothing wrong with that. What was wrong ( for me) was that underneath the ad.it said Joe Bloggs visited this page recently. Joe Bloggs obviously is a name I have substituted for my late friends husband. There is no problem with him visiting any site he wants. His late wife has been dead over a year and no one should be alone if they do not want to be. What is wrong is that it has been made public that "Joe" has visited the site and that his kids and all his family who use FB know.

Perhaps I am just an old fashioned trout !!!

Hmm, that is a problem. It also pops up who has liked which page etc. you need to be very careful. That website must be linked to fb though and not a random website.

I like fb and am a big user of it but I don't "like"lots of random pages and pictures. I play a couple of games and chat to friends etc.

What you have mentioned really is a concern.

Didn't realise it did this!

I use Facebook minimally. Mainly to keep in contact with distant family and friends, and dont use it for games etc, but I do know lots that do. I also have my page as secure as possible, no photos etc are visible to the outside world and I can not be searched either via a search engine nor thru Facebook itself.

My main concern is the constant changes/updates that they seem to being about that require you to change setting and security etc. people that are not particularly clever on computers will potentially not understand the changes that need to be made, nor what implications not making the changes may have.

It's scary and 9 times out of 10 I think it does more harm than good, yet is still strangely addictive!! X

Exactly one of the reasons I will not have a fb account. There is always a way to see what people have been doing "getting up to " as some put it. People put their whole life story on there in plain view for everyone to see. I personally have had a bad experience with it involving my daughter and sister, nasty things were said by sis to daughter and things blew up causing a massive fall out.

So .. whilst on the whole I dont think its bad if controlled properly, I still would not have an account. I am only sorry you had to see/witness something like that fillymum, and can only hope nothing bad comes of it for your friend.

Part of the reason I have gone off it too its very hard to contain and it is constantly changing etc and its getting more and more about the advertising.
As you say your friend can loo at what they like but it doesn't mean they would want everyone to know. I used to have adverts for Zoosk pop up and a picture of a fb friend saying she'd used it and I wasn't so sure she'd want everyone to know that either (not that I think theres anything wrong with it) but she was quite shy and had problems with an ex etc

Thank you for your replies. It is interesting to see that we agree in a general sort of way.

I found it so upsetting as Bobbie, my late girlfriend, had 3 sons who adored her and would be so offended to see that their step dad was on such a "hot" looking site, anyway it should be private. Husband himself has a daughter who in all probability would understand.

A lot of the silver surfers like myself do have trouble navigating sites like FB to make them as secure as possible, even then I would not trust it.
