Breastfeeding and Slimming World

we have yet to register her.... i cant decide whether to put her name as penelope on her birth cert or stick with Penny, as we'l only ever call her Penny anyways, and as it is Joe consistantly calls her Penny rose, which im glad of as i think its perfect. ... what do you think? should i give her the option? x

I would give her the option as she might light Penelope when she is older versus a nickname ;)

I ADORE Penelope ;)

Me too!! Penelope could be her "official" name and Penny a nickname. When she's a 35 year old accountant, she might prefer Penelope lol and if not she always has Penny. I say go with Penelope and everyone can call her Penny! I also LOVE the name Penelope. I was going to name Rose, Penelope Avery but DH shot it down :( He said it was too FLOWERY then goes and names her ROSE! Go figure... I love the name Rose though lol. Her full name is Anjola Rose (Anjola's her Nigerian name) but we both call her Rosie :)

Honey I panicked in the beginning about not having enough milk as Alex didn't feed very well due to jaundice, so I probably over pumped. Managed to get expressing down to about 11oz a day through just leaving as long as I can

Fern - Alex lost 11% of his body weight in 3 days through poor feeding and sleeping too long between feeds. Midwife advice was to strip him down to nappy for first boob, feed, change nappy, offer second boob every 3 hours. Blow in his face whilst feeding to keep him wakened, rub his feet and wipe face with a cold flannel. It felt so cruel but it did work and he got his birtweight plus 4oz back within 8 days.

My 'best'boob is my left, easier to feed, he attaches better and it expresses more when I do express from it.

Registration wise I'd put down Penelope, always nice to have the option. We registered Alexander Adam, but he gets Alex mostly now...

Finding SW a bit difficult at the moment, tryoing to hang in there and look at the bigger picture, as at 6 week check Dr confirmed I have a bit of PND, but I refused anti-depressants due to milk interaction, so just trying to exercise a bit more and hand Alex over to husband for a hour or so a night for "me " time and a break.

Lexi - re the touch of PND - try some vitamin B12 - I had bad PND with my last one and Dr's wanted me on anti-depressants but due to breastfeeding I didn't want to take them. So after some research I asked for vitamin B12 and was given Cyanocobalamin 50mcg, I found it made a huge difference. I'm taking it again - basically to avoid a repeat of last time, but I think it would be worth it if you have a touch of PND as it won't do any harm to baby.

Fern - sorry to hear you're having problems with Breastfeeding - it does get better hun. Adam also has a side he prefers - my left - when he's on the right he doesn't latch right or anything but we're getting there and he's getting better at taking both sides.
I love the name of Penny Rose as well. Don't stress too much about SW yet - the time will come when you will have more time on your hands to plan and cook - it may not work every day but the time will come.

I managed to lose half a lb on Monday. However I think I now have a problem with getting Adam to sleep he currently only wants to go to sleep when he's attached to me - which worries me as DS1 did that and he's only just started being able to put himself to sleep and he still doesn't sleep through the night although Adam has been for the past couple of weeks.

Rosiepeace how old is your son? My daughter won't go to sleep without rocking and she's getting too heavy for me to do this 3-4 times a day for her naps and bedtime and I don't know how long it'll go on for! I've tried "sleep training" but the whole concept of controlled crying seems wrong to me. I'm just hoping she'll grow out of it? I've got great biceps though so there is a silver lining lol!

Hi ladies...
I'm actually starting to pay more attention to this thread now I have a mere 5 weeks to go!!
I'm really hoping breastfeeding will go successfully, luckily I have lots of support - my MW is a family friend and my MIL works on the labour ward supporting women who BF. I think this has made me quite naive into thinking it'll all be easy which I know might not be the case.

Well done on all your hard work breastfeeding and sticking to SW!! I can't say I'll be jumping on the wagon straightaway, but will see how it goes!
Currently trying to batch cook plenty of healthy meals so we have easy meals after baby is born.

Hope you and your babes are all doing well xx

Thanks for the advise girls, think i will put penelope on her Birth cert

BF going well (on the left) and i can now get her to suckle on the right for five mins with no tears but that is all. yday i began expressing from the right side.. and i was getting 1-2 oz each 20 min sesh, but today i pumped at 4am, 7am, 11am and again at half 1 and iv only maned 3oz combined. :( im so worried my supply is suffering because shes not fed properly from it in days.

Lexi, im afraid the stripping down.. blowing, tickeling her feet/face dont help.. as i said iv seen 4 specialists now and not one could help. . im gunna keep trying her, in the hope she'l just sort it out one day!.. im seeing another specialist tomorrow who my friend put me in contact with. she thinks she can help.. fingers crossed!

Its so nice for the first time to genuinly not care about my weight, my mum tum is decreased as the weeks gone on, and whilst i still havnt weighed i proberly have over 2.5st to loose, though i dont know yet as i still havnt weighed, but i genuinly dont care.. all i care about is her right now and tbh... giving birth has given me a whole new appreciation for my body.. its done somthing so incredible and gifted me such perfection. I adore her and i couldnt care less if i never fit in my size 10's again aslong as im healthy for her! x

Fern - I'm so pleased that you are so happy with your weight at the moment as I know how much you struggled with the weight gain during pregnancy.
Don't worry if Penny is only feeding from one side - you will produce enough milk in that one side to feed her so don't stress too much about what you're expressing - as far as I know if you keep expressing you will get more out. Don't forget that women can breastfeed twins and even triplets and the babies don't suffer or starve.

Lexi - Adam is 10 weeks old at the moment. Really feel for you having to rock Rosie to sleep for every nap - My eldest was like that he had to be rocked - in the end we had to do controlled crying with him - he was just over a year and I couldn't rock him and put him down without him waking and wanting rocked again - so we had to start putting him down awake - we had to take it in turns to sit with him so that he knew we were there but it was still hard. That's one of the reasons I'm trying so hard not to get into the habit of rocking or feeding Adam to sleep.

Sarah - it is hard work but it is so worth it, for some it just clicks straight away - with my first it took nearly 9 weeks for us to get it right - I had bleeding nipples and pain before we got there. Thankfully with Adam it only took 3/4weeks.

Well my cooked hob has just broken so I now have to think of meals that can be done in the oven/microwave as I can't use the hob until I get something sorted for the cooked. Thankfully sunday dinner will be at my dad's but need to work out the rest of the meals. Any ideas anyone?

I'm exclusively BF'ing and the past few days noticed my supply has dropped. Alex been grazing on off on off the boob getting frustrated and I couldn't understand why. Not like I can even blame "dieting" as ate a bucket of rubbish this week cakes, chocs etc and been STARVING.

Reason? Periods have restarted after 7 weeks post partum :( Legit raging. What's that about? Scunnered.

No warning or anything.

I. AM. getting back on track this week starting tomorrow. Got stuff in for SW Quiche so that's a quick lunch, cold shrimp and seafood sticks for quick lunches.

i didnt realise periods affect your supply lexi? thanks for the heads up!

i saw another specialist today. we spent 3 hours together and she got Penny latched and feeding calmly, am so pleased. I hope this is a turning point for us and we can go on from here well.

my eatings really irratic atm. I had frosties for breaky, ... ate two slices of cheese on white toast for dinner.. didnt get back till half 5 so ate another bowl of frosties, 2 apples.. had a nap with penny and then whipped the chicken out of the slow cooker with some salad and new pots at 9.. and now ive just eaten half a bar of Milka choc that Joe got me as its been a long day (excuse alert!) .. atm im no so fussed about the whole weight thing, when im ready il sort that out.. but what should i be doing to ensure good milk supply??

xx

Fern, congratulations on the arrival of baby Penny, she's beautiful! I love love love the name Penelope but you should follow your instinct on this. I have a Rose too, it's an excellent name.

Can I just say my baby is turning 1 in 3 weeks, how how how has it gone so fast!?!?!?!?!

Lexi, nooooo ppaf at 7 weeks while bfing shouldn't be allowed!!!! I'm still waiting for mine?!?!?! I wish it would hurry up, if my hormones returned I think it would kick start my weight loss.

Hello everyone, only just seen this thread! I'm currently breastfeeding my 3rd, 4.5 month old Noah. I didn't get much support with DS1 so ended up switching to bottles at 3 days old. DD I managed to feed for 4 months but gave up when she got a cold and wouldn't latch on, also went a bit loopy (diagnosed eventually with severe PND when she was 6 months) and couldn't be bothered - I feel awful now :(

The first 12 weeks were a nightmare with feeding Noah but since then it's been so easy and nothing like my previous experiences. I'm so so glad I pushed past the first few weeks and carried on. Was really important to prove to myself that I could do it. Plus I am far too lazy to make bottles!

I joined SW when he was 5 weeks old but more as damage limitation to start with. This is my first strict week! Hope the scales are kind to me on Thurs.

Looking forward to chatting to you all x

Hi guys!

Lexi your period shouldn't affect milk supply at all. One thing has nothing to do with the other. My period started about 3 months after I had Rosie and my milk supply was unaffected. The thing that has the biggest impact on supply is how much demand is being put on you. So if your little one is not feeding as much, your supply will drop. It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation, is your supply dropping because your baby is not feeding thoroughly? Or is your baby not feeding throroughly because your supply is dropping??!! There are a lot of factors that affect milk production but your period definitely isn't one of them.

A GREAT website I use is kellymom.com :: Breastfeeding @ kellymom.com it's amazing!

Fernie I read that porridge helps increase milk supply (which was why I ate porridge every morning for like 4 months  I got bored though and started eating other things and my milk supply is the same as it's always been so I'm not sure if the porridge thing is fact or an old wives tale... The main thing is to eat a balanced diet with sufficient calories to keep things ticking along and drink lots of water. Also feed baby often! The most effective way to increade milk production is to remove as much as you can. Its basically demand and supply, the more often your breats are emptied, the more milk your body will produce! Good luck hun!

fenugreek tablets and milk thistle can really boost production - when i was a milk donor when b'feeding Cai i took them to make extra sure i could keep up with Cai feeding a LOT and still have enough to give the poorly babies. I havent done it this time round as i just dont have that much time free in my day.

Oats as Honey mentioned are fab for boosting milk production.

Congratulations! I am very jealous of the newborn part, Nia is almost 6 months and its gone so very very quickly! I still dont have periods though HOORAY!

Though she is wanting more solids now so i am going to have to go down to maybe 3 HEX now. This i will miss!

Yes fenugreek is brilliant! I take it most days (when I remember lol) and it really does work. I get it in holland and barrett.

i seem to be eating alot of crap- i think i need to try and get stuck into some food plan before my left over baby weight becomes permenant fat! i have 2st 10 to loose! harsh times lol .............. ww or sw!

Ppaf got me! I should be pleased ad its the longest I've ever gone without one after a baby.

Good luck to everyone for weigh in. X
