Frances' New House, New Life, New Start Diary...

Omg girls I near died this evening. Bringing stringer on a walk just me n him as my bf was due back in work at midnight n he/we got attacked by a husky that was lose n running round the road. Was screaming n screaming for help but no1 wud cum over. Eventually his owner came out but cudn get hold of it for ages. Then started shouting at me!!!! Omg I thought he was gona eat poor stringer. Honestly thought he'd chewed him up. Thankfully he was hurt. Not physically anyway but we were shaken!!
I went to report it to the police but apparently iv to go to dspca with my complaint so will ring them first thing in the morning.
Stringers ok now. My bf came down n met us n then we went on a short walk just to get him back out there so he's not too frightened tomoro. I tell ya I needed a drink after that!! I'd say the fright burnt 1,000 calories lol

Brona it was awful.. But we're all good so that's the main thing.. Just need to keep up his routine walking and hope he's not too scarred from it.. I'm getting on to DSPCA this morning tho.. I don't want the dog taken off them, but I want them to know they need to keep it kept securely for their dogs sake as well as the rest of ours..

Aw babe, I'm so glad your both ok. I was near crying reading that. It's always one of my fears walking Doug as soon as another dog comes to see him I tell the kids to stand back. I'd never forgive myself if they got caught up in anything like that. It must have been so scary. Poor little stringer and you.xxx

Oh Frances Hun,so sorry to hear this, you are doing the right thing getting Stringer back out there and reporting the people so they secure the dog! How scary for you.Glad you are both ok :0)
What a cheek the guy shouting at you though!

Aww poor Stringer. Maybe you should carry a stick with you when walking again, just so if it happens again you can give the other dog a slap on the nose to get rid of it. Definately report it. There is an alsatian dog beside my moms that is always out and about by itself. Mum is nervous of it as it ran after my sisters dog, she had to lift the dog and run for the house!!! But she was telling the owner to keep it in his yard. Owner is an ass....but anyway he never listened and a few weeks ago it ripped my mums cat to pieces, mum was so so upset. We reported the dog to the gardaí, it could have been one of our babies in the yard!!!! Some people should just not have dogs :-(

Thanks Sarah.. God it was so scary.. The thing just came out of nowhere.. Saying that I have the worst eyesight and it was dark so it was even worse.. But before I knew it the thing was on top of poor Stringer.. Thankfully he was fine but was just like WTF do I do?! Do I keep hold of him. Pick him up. Let him go...

Laura I am never ever ever bringing him out at night on my own again.. EVER!! At least when I can see I can prevent these things happening.. not that I can see round corners.. lol
Oh God that's awful.. Has you Mam reported the dog? Love my Stringer n I know he's in no way viscious but he's still a restricted breed which means we need to keep him on a short lead and muzzled at all times when in public.. And we will have to make sure he's secured properly when we're not home so there's no way for him get out.. In getting a restricted breed this is what we signed up for..And if we aren't willing and able, we shouldn't have got him!! So if they aren't willing to keep to the guide lines, they shouldn't have him.. I'd definitely be reporting him!!

I've just got off the phone to the dog warden people.. Aparently its not the DSPCA that I had to report it to, but the local dog warden.. So I've done that and they'v said they'll send someone out.. I've asked what will happen coz I really don't want the dog taken off them (this time) or put to sleep.. I just want the owner to take responsibility and be more careful.. As you say Laura, it have easily been a kid or elderly person walking the dog last night.. And my poor Stringer may not be so lucky next time n that's a chance I'm not willing to take

Would you mind me asking what's a restricted breed?? You were dead right to call the dog warden, if a dog has that kind of personality it always will. It will attack again and you mightn't be so lucky the next time. You or stringer!!

Don't mind at all.. There's a list of them.. I know off hand German Shepherds, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Huskys, Japenese Akita's are on it.. There's about 10 r 12 on the list altogether.. And then you have the banned breeds.. But I don't know what they are.. I think they're like boxers n them big scary dogs..
Its just means they must be kept on a short lead at all times.. And must be muzzled at all times.. And no person under 16 is allowed be in control of one... (Only found out the GS was on the list after we got Stringer)

Under the Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991, additional rules were imposed in relation to the following breeds of dogs in Ireland:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • English Bull Terrier
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • Bull Mastiff
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • German Shepherd
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback
  • Rottweiler
  • Japanese Akita
  • Japanese Tosa
And to every other strain or cross of these breeds

The regulations state the following:

  • These dogs, or strains and crosses of them, must be kept on a short, strong lead by a person over 16 years who is capable of controlling them.
  • These dogs, or strains and crosses of them, must be muzzled whenever they are in a public place.
  • These dogs, or strains and crosses of them, must wear a collar bearing the name and address of their owner at all times.

These rules on muzzling and leashing do not apply to dogs used by the Gardaí, the Dublin Harbour Police, State Airport Police and bona fide rescue teams in rescue operations. The rules on muzzling do not apply to guide dogs for the blind. Fines of up to €1,269.74 can be imposed for breaches of this legislation.

Oh I see! I never knew there was such a thing. Ironically I studied the control of dogs act for my tort law exam a few weeks ago and never spotted that! Thats a worrying sign hah. X

Wow I had no idea! Aw and most of those dogs are softies!! I've known other breeds that can be vicious..Shame you have to do that with Stringer!
It's the owners..not the dogs!
