One of the many negative thIngs people say about this diet is that " as soon as you come off it you put all the weight back on and more". I've always told them that the only way you can put all the weight back on is to come off the diet and to go back to eating badly, but I see so many people on this forum who are returning to the diet after piling weight back on that it gets worrying sometimes. Even the people who originally put me In touch with Cambridge have recently returned to the diet after putting a lot of weight back on. Hell lets be honest, even my CDC whose "before and after" pics are on Cambridge web site no longer looks anything like the "after" pics and has gone back on the diet.
It highlights to me the need for a good maintenance plan, the need to have something in place to ensure that we don't get to our goal, breathe a huge sigh of relief and rush off to the KFC to celebrate! Other than the inevitable build up of glycogen and water at the end of the plan, there's no reason why someone should put weight back on.
I'd be interested in hearing from people who have reached goal and successfully maintained, but I suspect that those people would no longer be on this forum.
Still catching up as you can see. There are a few people who seem to keep it off, but I agree, there is a worrying number of people returning. However, when you read the news on weight issues, you find that it really is a battle for life and we've got to keep vigilant even after CD. Between 2000-2001 I lost 50lbs which was great, but put much of it back on by 2006. Good news is that I never got back to my top weight, bad news is that although I continued to work out, etc., I never really lost much either. What I discovered in looking over my workout diary is that there were a couple of periods where my weight started to creep up, and as I didn't have the tools or headset to deal with it, I stopped recording my weight instead! Result: when I next weighed myself months later, I was much heavier!
My learning from that and from reading the diaries of those who have returned is:
- CD isn't going to be the final solution
- do the steps! it'll teach me the impact of adding carbs, allow my body to adjust to more food, and give me a much better idea of how much food I'll need to maintain (vs just jumping in and eating anything I please)
- never stop weighing myself - what gets measured gets managed
- take steps when weight comes on - I'm thinking that if I see an increase of 5-10lbs, to immediately go back on a VLCD and get rid of it
One of the positives I am taking away from CD is I now have better tools to deal with weight if it comes back on and I have better control over my eating (I hope). Before when I lost weight it was primarily because I suddenly started exercising after years of being sedentary. It had great benefits, but my body got used to it...
I find it a bit depressing to realize I am never going to conclusively win this battle without remaining vigilant and ready to act for the rest of my life. However, I was always aware I had a weight and food problem...now I can do something about it
