How can I diet at Boarding School?

Hi guys,

I go to a full year round (minus holidays) boarding school. Means we eat off a set menu in a dining hall, have set times for sports and when we can leave grounds. School is in the middle of nowhere so I can't go to a group, and wouldn't be allowed to anyway. I really want to get down in weight, but Im thinking its going to be impossible.

Eat less. Seriously. I'm sure the meals you are given must be reasonably healthy so have a smaller portion? Cut out any junk food or sugary snacks and, although you are saying set times for sport, you must be able to walk in the grounds in the evening or join a sports club.

I'm assuming you are quite young so you don't want to do anything drastic.

Good luck!

Do you have a school nurse you could see? He or she could help you work out a plan, based on where your weight is at the moment and what's available to you in terms of food and activity.

Otherwise, mass catering tends to be quite heavy in starchy carbs (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, pastry...) and these are great if you're very active every day but otherwise not so good. Try to fill up on veggies and lean protein (poultry and fish cooked healthily, skin removed) instead, and obviously avoid high fat foods (cheese, crisps, fried food, most red meat including bacon and sausages...) and foods high in various forms of sugar (soft drinks, sweets, cake, biscuits etc).

Don't know if you've got stats up as I'm using my phone. Have you checked out what your bmi is to see how healthy your weight/ height ratio is? Just want to be sure you definitely need to lose weight and aren't just comparing yourself to skinny girls in school!

If you're in the overweight/ obese category then making small changes really will help. Swap your usual snacks for fruit, eat smaller portions at mealtimes, fill half your plate with vegetables, and add in a bit extra exercise. Even a 30 minute walk each day will really help.

Hope this helps, let us know how you're getting on.

How old are you can I ask?

I'd say cut your portion sizes. Just because they dish you up a certain amount, doesn't mean you have to eat it all. Your best bet is probably going to be trying to get in extra exercise where you can. Is there a space anywhere that you can go to workout? Go for walks/runs/jobs around the school grounds if that's all you can do then at least it's something.

And like someone else said, maybe have a chat with the school nurse, see what they suggest.

Cut all your meals in half on your plate and eat half then push it away.
Remember, losing weight means just eating less calories than you are using so eating half of your meals should do you.
Makes me a bit sad that you are on here worrying about your weight though hun. Enjoy your youth, do you really need to lose much? x

Hope i don't sound patronising, i don't mean too! It's just i had such a hard time off various people about my weight when i was younger and when i look back i know i wasn't that overweight. It messes with your mind and i would say contributed to the overeating problems i had/have.
