Licking the Lid of Life....my esoteric diary

I agree with both of you. I think with the recent attention in the press and my own personal experience and having replied to the op's similar vein posts in the past I just felt it was too sensitive.

The threads gone now anyway :)

hmm if it rains.....there is the mall (Churchill square) and if you head up to the food court there are a couple of nicer places that overlook the centre itself. We have a very large M&s opposite the mall outside with a lift and a big cafe on the top floor. They are both good if you are central for the day :). Do you know where you are heading for?

being so sea-sidey means a lot of outside stuff is catered for predominantly. Id say the shopping mall is the best bet :)

Lets change the subject.:)

Sam as you live at Brighton can you recommend anywhere to go if it's raining. Will have my 75 year old MIL with me so it will need to be undercover and somewhere to sit. :)
I asked son and he suggested a pub.

Yes Churchill Square is a good one and how about the cinema....if there's anything worth watching? Wet days are difficult with visitors. If it's a dry day the pier is always nice for a wander...

On a nice day I love the pier :) or shopping in the lanes (both north and south - I'm not sure how familiar you are with Brighton but it's the historical shopping district) can be a bit of a schlep though so may depend upon the mobility of your MIL? There is also the pavilion which has some lovely gardens with seating and a little outside coffee shop. Again great if the sun is shining!! :) I hope it is!!

when are you here?

Sounds like you have a nice time planned :) we have the Brighton eye too now right by the pier if that's your kind of thing. On a nice day the views are really quite nice :) although if you have ever done the London eye it's a bit of an anti climax haha. The pavilion is a winner as its so well preserved inside, it's fascinating from both a historical and architectural point of view and the Brighton museum is right next door too :)

Haha then definitely the pavilion and maybe the museum. The lanes are nice for just walking rather than actually shopping. Plenty of little coffee places to stop if needs be.

I bought a fitbit flex today. I'm hoping it pays for itself by helping me get to target as I'll admit I'm struggling a bit now. I'm definitely on track for a gain this week. Now it's just how much I gain due to intense damage limitation. It's shown that I have been sedentary today but have only had it on since lunch. I plan to crack out the power hoop tonight and maybe schedule a run in tomorrow morning. So I suppose it's doing its job. It has a mfp style layout on the app so although I know we don't count kcal I'm going to use it to regulate my portion sizes a bit. Hopefully it will do the trick!

I looked at the fitbit, and then my natural skinflint tendencies clicked in and I bought a bog standard, £15, Omron pedometer LOL. It really has helped though - I was horrified by how little I was actually doing, despite walking the dogs and walking to and from work. Now I'm so much more conscious about making myself move more and it definitely did help to boost my losses for that last push :)

It's actually your fault. Haha. What you said about portions and awareness for the last push drove me to buy it ;)

to be fair although it was expensive and I can't really afford it I think it may pay for itself. I did manage a little run this morning. Only about half a mile but I'll work up to something decent. The last time I did any running at all I weighed about 16st and was a (tight) size 16. So running in my old joggers meant pulling them up a lot! Me thinks a trip to primark for some leggings is in order. No way am I paying silly money for actual fitness wear. Not yet!! Got to pay off fitbit first :)

The last time I tried actual running I nearly knocked myself out with my overly large bazookas ... now they resemble golf balls in a pair of old socks I'm working myself towards giving it another go ;) My friend runs and uses an awesome Zombie app on her phone, complete with missions (which involve - surprise, surprise - running from the zombies) and I'm rather tempted. Mind you that will mean actually buying a mobile, which will then mean that people can contact me 24/7 - a less appealing idea than being chased by even real zombies lol.

I find that primark leggings come up a bit big (same for matalan) and I end up pulling them up all the time - Asda leggings on the other hand are just as cheap and a nice fit :) Paying good money for clothes to get sweaty in is seriously overrated in my opinion lol but I reckon you are right and the fitbit will pay for itself - unlike my poor exercise bike, which I made my husband and son get out of the loft 3 weeks ago and which (having been used about 5 times) is now back to largely doing it's familiar duty as a handy clothes horse :D

The zombies thing sounds fun. I might look into that.

I laughed at your exercise bike story, mainly because last year I insisted I needed a cross trainer. I used it twice. We didn't really have the room for it so it went in a cupboard and getting it in and out took some serious dragging. So I didn't bother. It spent its life in the cupboard with things hanging on it. Luckily it was a second hand cheapie to start with and I didn't lose by money when I eventually sold it and bought my wii instead. Which also just sits there....however now I'm planning on building in more exercise I reckon it might get some more use.

Ill check out asda for leggings, thanks for the tip! I have plenty of old tops I can pop on its just the bottoms look (and feel) blimmin awful!!

By the end of the day I'll be at 4 out of 5 lights on my flex so that's an improvement already! :)

I shan't even go there about the step machine that's in the loft then ;) My friend who runs from zombies had a similar cross trainer experience - hers too has now gone to be a clothes repository in another home lol.

My husband recently suggested a rowing machine! Where the heck I was supposed to put that, given that my (thankfully large) bedroom is already playing host to the exercise bike, two full sized coach built prams, a toddler bed, two car seats and all the normal bedroom furniture. It's not as cramped as it sounds, but a rowing machine would pretty much make me look like one of those TV hoarders ... and besides, I'd have to stoop to pick my clothes up off of it :D

Haha excellent. Yes home exercise equipment does need to be of the taller variety. Otherwise jeans and dresses would puddle on the floor. WI in tonight and by my scales I'm in for a .5-1lb gain. That's good considering the damage I could have caused and I would hope that it would have gone (and some) by next wed. My pattern has always been 3 weeks loss one week STS or small gain. I'm not sure if its psychological or physiological but even at the height of my weight loss powers it was the same.

We potentially have a taster session next week so I've got to get my thinking cap on for that now!

Thanks Janet! I'm quietly hopeful. Will check in afterwards and let you all know but to be honest anything under a 1,000,000 lb gain is an achievement haha.

Let us know how you do this morning! Good luck! :)

Good luck for WI Sam :D

We had a taster session last week and I made fruity coleslaw - just prepared it all apart from the apple and adding the 'yoganaise' and then chopped the apple and mixed it all together at the last minute. It went down a storm :D ... Oh, and I printed off a load of copies of the recipe and took those with me too - saved me from having to repeat it dozens of times lol.

Here's the recipe ...

Yoganaise (Syn Free)

1 (small) tub Fat Free Natural Greek Yoghurt (check that the one you buy is syn free – I use Asda ‘Chosen By You’, which is)
1/4 teaspoon Cider Vinegar
1/2 teaspoon Balsamic Vinegar
1/4 teaspoon Yellow Mustard Powder

1/2 teaspoon Hot Pepper Sauce
Freshly Ground Black Pepper
1/2 teaspoon Paprika
1 Teaspoon sweetener (I use a single Sweetex tablet and stir well)
Salt to taste

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well – add more seasonings to taste

Keeps in a jar in the fridge for a few days and can be used for just about anything that you would use mayonnaise for, but particularly nice when used as a base for potato salad/ pasta salads or with a mixture of tinned tuna, chopped peppers and sweetcorn as a jacket potato filling.

Alternatively can be used in this lovely crunchy:

Fruity Coleslaw (Syn Free)

1 x Yoganaise recipe

1/4 Cabbage (red or white) finely shredded

1 large carrot, grated

(I cheat and buy ready prepared Coleslaw mix – no dressing – from the supermarket, because life is too short for grating carrots ;) )

1 x Red Onion, finely sliced in half rings

2 sticks celery (if liked), chopped/diced

1 red pepper, diced

Large Handful of grapes, sliced in half

2 Apples, cored and diced

Combine all ingredients in a bowl, stir well and serve (with whatever you fancy )

Thanks Molly that sounds perfect! There is a nice recipe on the veggie forum for a vegan dip too but I like the sound of yours more!!

Molly I like the look of your recipes too, thanks.

What a lovely morning...first I weighed 3lbs down!! Was not expecting that...have to gain 1/2lb to stay in target though; what a problem! lol.
Then we voted for Woman of the Year! I was one of five ladies asked to give a little resume of our SW journeys, so that was an honour even to be voted for. A lovely lady was the winner. Then...I won a raffle prize...basket of fresh veggies!!
