well crumbs and crikey o riley have i had an eventful few weeks.
so the last time i posted on here was saturday 16th april and so much has happened since then.
whilst i cant remember what i had to eat each day since then, i did take photos of my main meals most days so will put the pics on.
monday 18th april was the kids second week off school, and after today i had taken the next 2 weeks off. i worked from 230 - 530pm then raced home to do dinner and start my time with the kids.
that night we had a sw takeaway
tuesday 19th april (red day) we decided as it was such a gorgeous day to try out the local open air swimming pool which was great fun. £12 entry for the 3 of us for the whole day by the pool. i packed us a lunch, i had ham salad sandwich (1b) and 2 minibabybels, joes sausages cooked and cut up into mini sizes with a mustard mayo (1syn).
grapes, apple and ww crisps. we spent all day there and had a fab time. the kids were like water babies and i actually got in too . ok so im not slim but for once i actually felt better about myself, still a bit self conscious but much better.
that night i made maggi chicken wings with the paprika maggi packet. the kids loved it- im still hooked by the garlic one.
pudding i made a sw mousse with a strawberry sugar free jelly made up to 1/2 pint with boiling water then cooled and mixed with a tub of quark. - gorgeous and syn free.

wednesday 20th april i had been invited with my daughter to visit an old patient of mine. when we got there she insisted on treating us to lunch out at a pub. - oops praying for salads on the menu we set off. luckily they had salads so i ordered a smoked mackerel, prawn and egg salad. the mackerel was fine, but the prawns were served in a mayonnaise, the egg was ok too but it had a large spoonful of potato salad and coleslaw and 1 measily lettuce leaf. i couldnt leave it as she had paid for it and felt it rude to not eat it. so i did and felt bad for eating so much mayo. :sigh:
thursday 21st april
at the moment i cant recall what we did on thursday but i certainly remember friday 22nd april.
friday 22nd april - good friday
my son was originally born on good friday and had turned 13yrs old a few weekends before. as he was with his dad for his birthday, i decided to plan a birthday picnic with him on this good friday. we asked friends of ours who had small children and another friend who was celebrating her 1st wedding anniversary. we hoped it would be good weather and sure enough it was to be the hottest weekend so far and then the hottest april on history.
so i cooked and i baked and i planned . i made scotch eggs with joes sausagemeat, mini quiches, rolls, crisps and snacks all within plan. fruit salad and a huge mixed salad. we set off very excited with eggs to have a hunt with, and chairs and goodness knows what paraphernalia we took. needless to say the car was laden and so was the ample picnic fridge.
due to the size of the picnic we just had 1 slice of toast and a scraping of marg and marmelade with a quick cuppa and ran off for our day.
as we approached the park we were diverted due to an accident at the junction and saw a car wrapped around a tree. god what a time to have an accident says me, hottest day and hospitals being hot, staff on a reduction due to easter hols etc. well, i dunno if i jinxed it but the day was to turn into a nightmare. other half and daughter loaded themselves up and took off for the waiting huddle of friends waving in the distance. my son and i loaded up, locked the car and made our way to the roadside to cross.
it was very busy in the park with cyclists and cars although the cars were going very slowly to avoid the cyclists who seemed to be travelling at an incredible speed. we looked left then as i looked right, i saw my son step out whilst still looking left and into the path of a car. i shouted 'ben' but it was too late and the car hit him, knocking him backwards and running over his leg. thankfully it didnt hit his head, and the cars can only have been doing 10-15mph. had it been a busy high street i wouldnt like to consider what could have been the outcome.
he is the bravest boy i think i have ever met in my nursing career with such a high pain threshold, he didnt cry once at the scene nor did he make a fuss except to say repeatedly 'im sorry mum, i didnt look'. it was the worst thing ive had to witness and whilst he is fine now mentally , i have terrible dreams where i relive the moment it hit him. horrid!
so, we were carted off in ambulance to hospital whilst our picnic was carted off towards our waiting friends. they kept hold of my daughter so she could ' carry on as usual' and play with the other kids. i had already seen that bens leg was badly broken and possibly dislocated at the ankle, so i knew we were in for a long visit at hospital, so no place for her to be on such a lovely day. casualty was busy with - errr casualties! all having fallen off bikes, out of trees etc and so we were placed 5th in a queue of 8 awaiting theatre to fix all broken limbs. we had a cup of nhs coffee which i was used to after 20yrs in the nhs but my other half was missing the picnic as it was now 2pm. i couldnt even think of food, but did chew on a pack of liquorice sweets from the bottom of my handbag.
why are there always sweets at the bottom of your handbag? and luckily these were neither stuck to a clump of hair from my brush nor clinging to a parking slip. :yuk:
eventually after hours (6 to be precise) we were transferred to the ward with a plastered leg ready for surgery in the morning. as he was 'nil by mouth' from midnight i said i would be too so there was no slip ups. other half managed to get one of our friends to bring our car to the hospital so at least he could get home, im sure it was to get his hands on the picnic.
i arranged for my daughter to sleep over at a friends and other half brought in bits from the picnic which was now a wilted salad, warm fermenting fruit, the quiches were fine tho and so were the rolls and sandwiches although the ham was white from the sun. the scotcch eggs smelt - well, eggy and they had fllen apart in the heat or the transportation - who knows, it didnt stop the other half tho, but then nothing would. i managed half a roll and wasnt hungry. i was too worried about ben. we settled down for the night and i sat watch over him as he was in so much pain, he was having the maximum doses every few hours and managed to get very little sleep.
the following day he was taken down to theatre and i managed to eat a cup of tea and a canteen sandwich, i didnt eat for the rest of the day as i couldnt focus on anything but ben, he was in alot of pain for the next 24hrs and i sat by his side catching an odd 30 mins doze before he woke or stirred again. after 3 days exhausted we were told we could think about plans for going home, once he had seen the physio for crutches etc.
as i pushed him in a chair out to the bathroom, i spotted a set of scales- just out of interest i climbed on, i'd lost 4lb through worry, not eating or more likely the bag of liquorice id eaten all to myself in casualty the few days previously. they had certainly had 'an effect'
note to self, eat a bag of liquorice the day before weigh in from now on!
the day we came home i also couldnt face much food and i sat with him another night in his bedroom, too worried to sleep and leave him. in the morning i armed him with a whistle to attract my attention at night or when i was in the garden. STUPID STUPID STUPID IDEA, DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!
i now want to ram the bloody whistle down his throat.
