POLY"SISTER" OVARIES

I have to say I bought a bulk lot of ham whilst shopping this week thinking if I feel hungry and have a CARB craving I'll just grab a slice of that. I've resisted so far....:D

I'm absolutely fine at work, there's no temptation, the offices are a drive away from any shops, there's no vending machine and there's only 10 of us in the office so birthday celebrations aren't occuring every day....:)

I agree about the medical profession - I've had very little support when it comes to my weight. My Dr did refer me to the practice nutritionist who I went to see and she went through the normal breakdown of what should be on your dinner plate ie: what percentage protein, what percentage carbs and portion sizes but it was relevant for the PCOS. I was prepared to do anything but then when she went to book my next appointment it was in 3 months time.... I couldn't do it without the support and come away bitterly disappointed.

The herbalist I saw was excellent as she had been a nurse and she also specialised in nutrition. So although I'd been doing Atkins when I saw her she told me to start introducing brown rice etc.

The only success I've ever had is doing a VLCD so I'm sticking with CD for the time being and whilst I'm on it I'm preparing a cookbook of healthy meals to cook when I venture back to proper food...

Keep up with you determination it will pay off.

I know pcos doesn't go away but as it is controlled by hormones the symptoms can vary at different times in your life. On my first scan you could see the cysts clearly but when i was scanned this year they were hardly visable.

I took herbs, vitamins and minerals to help but it takes a while for them to work.

First weigh-in last nite and lost 7lb....

Delighted..and determined..

Hope everyone ok?

Hi I am another PCOSer too.

I supposedly have cysts completely blocking BOTH sides of my 'tubes'. I completely stunned the doctors by falling pregnant 8 weeks after this scan .... with fraternal twins.

Diet wise - I am a carb queen too and never realised (before I came on here that is!) that my body was storing them. Same as everyone else I tried to lose the weight through other diets to no avail but CD helped me to lose 26lbs. I still haven't had a period for 3 months but I just feel so much better with the small amount I have lost.

xx

Hi, I have pcos too, I have just started the CD and am on day 3! I have tried every other diet in the book and really really struggle to lose just 1 measley pound! I am really hoping this will work. I love my carbs esp bread, but I am thinking that food will always be there and when i'm mainatining I will be able to have 'normal' food but just in moderation and it's all about changing habbits.

Me and my husband got married in May this year and are trying for a baby, we've been trying for a couple of years but to no avail. I know I have to lose weight and then hopefully I will fall pregnant or at least be considered for fertility drugs/treatments.

I had a scan at the hospital when my pcos was diagnosed and they did a vaginal one and wasn't too bad so don't worry.

This is a great forum and I'm sure I will be posting regularly!

Nicola.

Hey cysters !

I have pcos too i am on day 2 of a restart and feeling pretty good at the mo !

I have all the symptoms associated with pcos (lucky me) and have never been able to conceive although i am blessed with 2 stepdaughters who are as far as they are cocerned my real daughters so i guess very lucky me !

I have problems with carb cravings and this is the only diet i have ever done and lost weight 3 stone but foolishly i fell of the diet and gained 4 stone back i know at my own cost personally i need to follow this diet to the letter and follow maintenence and i WILL BE SUCCESSFUL !!!!!!!

Good luck and love to y'all xxx

I to have the PCOS and I am doing this diet sole so that I can lose weight so that I can start my family. I am 23 and have 3 stone left to lose I have so far lost 2 stone 2lbs in 5wks so its going good on the weight loss side.

Your story sounded so much like mine and it some how makes feel better that people know how and what I am going through such as your self coz when you are diagnosed... you feel a bit...well broken.

Would love to keep in touch Mrs Rush!

Hi Nicola

Firstly congrats on the wedding - fab day??

I read you've been trying for a baby for a while - not sure whether you've read my other posts on this thread - but have you tried herbal treatment.

My OH and I had been trying for nearly 2 years when I went. I hadn't had a period for over 14 months but within the first month of taking herbal remedies (proper prescribed ones) I had a period. That was in October 2000, I then had one in Jan 2000 and another in April (looked like they were coming every 3 months) but I felt myself ovulate (very painful ) at the beginning of May and low and behold I found out I was pregnant on 21st May.

I appreciate this doesn't work for everyone and by the time I actually went to see the herbalist, I'd lost about 3 stone doing Atkins and had cut out all caffenine and alchol for several months so she said my body was ready for the treatment which was why I had period so quickly.

Just a suggestion as an alternative to the medical treatment.... I was scared of that as the risk of miscarriage is so high for overweight PCOS women in both the first and second trimester, so I thought I'd be better trying to fall more naturally. Just also to say I flew through the pregnancy, no sickness, water retention or other horrible symptoms and I was still about 13 stone when I fell.

Good luck anyway... I truly hope it happens for you both very soon.:)

Hi Hannah,

Thanks for your reply, yes wedding was fab, seems like ages ago now though....all that planning and whoosh the day is over!

What sort of herbal stuff did you take? The only thing I have tried is Agnus Castus which I took a few months before the wedding, it seemed to help with my monthly cycle when I stopped taking it for the 1st month or 2 but after that i'm all over the place again, stop start bleeding - don't know where I am! So I was wondering whether to go back to taking agnus castus or to try something different.

I'm really glad it worked for you, I've always wondered if herbal medication really does work.

Is there a herbalist you recommend? I'm in East Anglia near Norwich. And also is it expensive? Have also thought about accupuncture and reflexolgy but thought I'd have a go at losing weight (have quite a bit to lose) first.

Thanks very much
Nicola.

Glad you had a lovely wedding day - everyone tells you to enjoy every minute because you're right it really does whizz past - I vaguely remember the day...

I'm down in Rochester, Kent so unfortunately don't know any herbalists in your neck of the woods. I went to a lady at a practice in West Malling, Maidstone, Kent.

Shortly after I was diagnosed after my 30th birthday, I joined Verity the Self-Help Group for women with PCOS and subscribed to their regular newsletters and information sheets. In one of their publications they recommended herbalism as an alternative theropy so I just thought I'd give it a try - we'd been trying for over 2 years. My herbalist really was lovely and thankfully also specialised in nutrition so gave me diet advice as well which was an added bonus.

I had an hour consultation and then she sent me away with 2 linctuses (sp?) one of which was a mixture of different herbs (I would say between 6-9 diff herbs) and the other was a single herb that was a nutrient for the pituitary (sp?) gland. I had to take these every morning and then go back to see her within the month. I then saw her fairly regularly (monthly/6 weekly) and each visit if I remember correctly was about £40 and this included the prescription. It was a proper dispensary so they made up your mixture in front of you from loads of different bottles which is great because each visit my prescription would change slightly depending on any different symptoms (ie: constipation, headaches, groin pains etc).

I found just talking to her fantastic because your general GP doesn't really want to know and it takes ages for a referal to a Gyni each time.

A friend who's trying to fall at the moment has tried Acupuncture and it hasn't worked for her but different things work for different people. After my experience I'm a strong believer in alternative theropys.

Good luck and keep me posted. If you want any other info just let me know.

xxx
