Pregnancy and Baby Advice Thread: From Conception to Birth, and Beyond!

It's weird as the TT machine was £53.99 literally minutes ago! I missed out on a mobile I wanted the other day for just over £20, it was back to nearly £50 the next day! Crazy Amazon... :/

Aww gutted! Hate it when that happens x

I've not had a day out yet,... But I'm making bottles in batches. Just been discussing it on my mum 2 be fb page there...
Some if the girls tho have the formula travel cup?! U count out the formula scoops into it ready to add to water... And have thermal flasks to carry hot water n make bottles as required...

Do you mean you're making them up with the formula in and then just feeding at room temp when ready? I saw those formula cups but taking a flask with me sounds like a lot of hassle, we have enough to carry as it is. I've been using the cartons until now but wasn't sure whether it was ok to just make up a bottle as everywhere I read about it people seem to take bottles of boiled water out with them and just add formula but I thought it was supposed to be initially mixed with boiling water to kill bacteria??

Yea. That's what I'm doing so ill be able to have some bottles with me.
I know it's not "what's recommended" but it's how all my nieces n nephews were fed n they were fine n a few of the M2B girls feed that way n have no problems...

I have a dispenser cup but never actually thought about days out. Just kinda "oh that'll b handy if we're out visiting"
Not sure where the sterile bottle etc was gona come from lol

Girls when feeding... Do u class farts as wind??

I wind Eabha after 15ml... Then about 60/70ml then at end of her feed. The last wind is a nightmare n sometimes I don't get a burp at all. However I may get a fart (such a lady lol)
Just out if curiosity really... She settles fine n so far we've only had 1 trapped wind episode but that was due to having a waistband ion all day...

I take a sterilised bottle out with me when I take the ready made cartons. I always put them in a sandwich/freezer bag before they go in the changing bag which makes my step mum laugh because the lids are on so the teat is still sterile so it makes no difference. I've taken bottles that I made at home out and gave at room temp, did it on Saturday, then read the two hour thing and panicked that I'd be giving him an upset tummy!!

We struggle to get burps out of Cole and have since day one. He's far better now but we usually only get one or two burps a bottle. He farts a LOT so I asked the midwife and she said as long as it's coming out somewhere and he doesn't seem in pain it's fine. I know I'm not a baby (wish I was!) but I never burp, just can't do it, and never did as a baby either but it's never bothered me because I'm good at farting ;) haha.

It's now £74.99 on amazon! How bizarre?!

If you but something from amazon then the price goes down the next day you can e-mail a complaint and they credit your account with the money! :)
I'm not sure if it works the other way tho u seeing the price then it going up when u buy.

I think it has something to do with the whole 27 day guarantee thing.

When we were buying Stevie rocker we couldn't find it in the shops at all so checked amazon and thought it was a bargain at £90 (£125 in the shops) so ordered it straight away. When I was showing my mother what we had ordered it was £81.99!! Literally a couple of days later! I e-mailed, got the credit on my account. Checked the product and it had gone up to £120!!! So of you have time I would watch larger products.

Same happened with babies first Christmas book - original price £30, I got it for £24.99 and the closer it got to Christmas the cheaper it got!! Went to £14.99 (I complained as it hadn't even been Christmas yet!!) and got the credit. Then a few days before t was back to £30!!! They mustn't get many complaints!! Xx

Ooh I didn't know you could do that! I will try that next time, thank you!

Re: burping, I count farting as wind and Seth trumps a lot! I always know that something's up if he hasn't trumped much in a day... That boy has no airs and graces ;)

Re bottles: I know I only occasionally bottle feed but when we go out I always take a sterilised bottle and a mini bottle of formula just in case. The good thing about the bottles I have (MAM) is that they can be totally disassembled and sterilised individually. So if I'm running late I can just throw a bottle in my bag and run it through the microwave in the parent and child room in Westfield once I get there. It only takes 3 minutes plus cooling time and you have a freshly sterilised bottle! Or, as happened the other day, if he wants more milk and I need to buy a new carton and re-sterilise the bottle it can be done easily when out and about. I definitely recommend them, even if you just keep one handy for going out. :) I think we'll be going for the flask method once we start making feeds out and about - I need to pick up a powder dispenser first though. I have to say it definitely helps having a shopping centre with good facilities, the rooms in Westfield are fab and all have a bottle warmer and microwave so that makes everything much easier :) xxx

RE- Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature Perfect Prep Machine

<img src="http://www.minimins.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=126278"/>

Ladies who got this, or thinking about it.... is it worth it?? Before i used to make 2-4 bottles and put into the fridge and heat in microwave when needed... but debating to get one or not?? x

We love this - makes things so much easier. Like Sarah we got ours reduced but would also pay the full price for it x

Bella is not really a burper but she farts a lot! Going to ask the midwife today. I feel bad not getting a burp out of her as she does sound windy to me (although not uncomfortable) x

To get round the bacteria issue you can make them up as you would at home, rapidly cool for 10mins in a few inches cold Water and then stick at the bag of the fridge. If you can then keep it cold (my change bag has a cool bag area which fits a bottle and a cool block) and then heat it up wherever you are that's fine. Most places I've been to either have a baby room with bottle warmer etc or coffee shops etc are happy to give you a bowl/Jug with hot water. Wetherspoons even gave me one of those tommee tippee flasks!
But I have done the sterile bottle and carton thing too.
Xxx

While we're talking bottles, what do all you FF mummies do if you're going out for the day?

I haven't really thought about it yet... At the moment if I go to my sisters or nans I just take a carton and a sterilised bottle but not sure what we would do if out shopping for example... Hmmmmm I need to start thinking about this x

See I used to work for Greggs (when it was Bakers Oven) and we weren't allowed to give hot water out for bottles. Health and Safety or something. I've got two of those insulated pockets in my changing bag so bottles are kept cold/warm. But nowhere for a cool block. Can't wait until he's on proper food!! Xx

Hey ladies. Anyone any ideas... Eabha (feels weird using a name for her!!) does seem to poo allot!!! Monday, the day she was born, every nappy was poo-ey. Tuesday morning she had 2 poo-ey nappies n then none til Friday! Her first one was full! But nothing after. Saturdays first nappy had a teeny poo in n nothing since!!
PHN said she's prob not getting enough food so I hav upped her intake but still nothing. When she did go it was a little yellow but not dry n quite runny but was wet... If that makes sense...
I do the cycle legs n leg pressing against her tummy etc a couple of times a day. She doesn't seem at all bothered by it. Not grumpy n is sleeping etc.
Anyone any thoughts??
Should I just keep keeping an eye on it n see how she goes?
R shud I give the PHN a ring n let her kno?

Also... Hiccups! Has anyone any tips on how to get rid of them?? I've read up to feed thru them but that doesn't seem to work for us!!! N I've read up in how to give her a little massage to get rid of them but neither works for us..
I know they say babies aren't bothered by them but they are quite bad n they sound uncomfortable. N it's always when she gets cosy asleep that she gets them!!

Cole doesn't poo every day, it's usually every two ish. For the last week or two he's only poo'd in his nappy twice. Every other time it's been when I've taken his nappy off for a bit of naked bum time ;) he isn't bothered by it either. I think the freedom and fresh air excites him and as soon as he farts it's like Mr Whippy!! My HV said that I only really needed to worry if his poo was dry, hard or pellet like as that can be a sign of constipation. She also said if he was getting plenty of wet nappies it's fine. Other than that I can't help, sorry Hun :(

Re the hiccups, no idea but if you find out let me know lol. Cole doesn't get them as much now as he used to though, so maybe it's an age thing?

Aw that's a great help Sarah. She gives me plenty of wet nappies alright!! N I'd read about the dry/ hard/pellet poo's being an issue... Haven't done no nappy time with her yet as the evening just seem to disappear. Will make more if an effort to n maybe that help.
As I say she seems happy n content do I'm not too concerned... But just kinda want reassurance that I don't need to worry... If that makes sense.
Am giving her smaller more frequent bottles today n a bigger one tonight in the hope of getting extra food in so I might get a poop...

Bella was the same, at first every nappy had a poo in it and then from a week or so old it's maybe 2 a day... She does seen to strain a lot as well bless her :/ as Sarah said I was told not to worry as long as we were getting wet nappys.

Maybe bath her? Bella has pooed as soon as we put her in the bath ;)

Oh and hiccups I tried feeding through them and seemed to work x

Right so girls ..
I'm starting to panic about feeding .. I would like to bf but am also considering formula feeding depending on how I get on . Anyway I am a little confused in how to store feeds and what to do when going out and about.
So am I right in thinking that when formula feeding I can make bottles up in the morning then wait for them to cool before storing in the fridge and then warm as needed throughout the day ?? This is what I have always done with the little boy I look after at work but I started looking after him at around 5 months so just wanted to check the same still applies with newborns . As far as I can remember I then have 2 hours to use milk that has been taken out of the fridge .. Is this right?!
I would throw out any milk that hasn't been used that day..but just so I'm clear how long can you officially store milk in the fridge for before it needs throwing ??
Also if i get on well with bf and decide to express how do I store these bottles ? Do the same rules apply ?!
Sorry for all the questions I'm just having a last minute panic :/
Xxx

They recommend you make bottles from scratch now but you can do it the way you do at work, it's just not supposed to be the best way. I found this link which helped me. I think this is why a lot of people are buying the TT machine as the new guidelines are a faff! And yeah, it's 2 hours once the feed has been made until you have to throw it away.

http://www.nhs.uk/start4life/documents/pdfs/start4life_guide_to_bottle_feeding.pdf

With expressed milk you don't have to be quite a careful (although still careful of course!) as the milk is sterile and stands up to bugs better than formula does. So you can keep in the fridge for up to 5 days I was told. I can only express 3oz max at a time which is nowhere near enough for a feed so I have a sterilised bottle in the fridge which I add to every time I express by pouring the milk from the collection bottle into the fridge bottle. I was told to fridge the collection bottle first though so you're not adding warm milk to cold, Then when he's ready for it I just swap the sealing ring for a teat, warm it up in hot water and we're ready to go :) xxx
