Busybusy's 4 week challenge

I have a muslim friend in America, she has decided to stop her fast since it has become hot and had persuaded her brother to not fast also. He does a driving job and she was worried about his, and others, safety if he crashed his lorry. She is busy with the Quran though and so for her this is still a special time.

Morning Lynne,

How freaky! That sounds just like me!! So glad she's been sensible about it. All islamic teachings say that worldly duties always come before religious duties. It's not supposed to be hardcore.

Not freaky at all, I now realise it WAS you!!! Oopsy. :wave_cry: Too many busy hot days and I am getting addled. Sorry. I have a Muslim friend in the US, I contacted her when I got a spam email from a friend saying some pretty bad things about Muslims, so I Googled the "facts" in the email and found this lady commenting on it, I liked her style, turned staker and located her on FB. Luckily she wasn't freaked by my tracking her down,, and now we chat sometimes, but I can see her life unfold on there and I love it. She is a very gregarious person and is happy to spread the word, so she is very happy that I am taking an interest. One of the things she posted recently was this http://corpus.quran.com/ when I get time, I will be looking around. I might not absorb any but I am interested.

Incidentally I have unfriended some people who send racist emails. Their world is small and bitter.

It was me!! Ha ha ha - that's funny. The kind of things I do all the time, so nice to see I'm not the only one ;-P, yeah there are a lot of idiots out there and a lot of ignorance and lack of knowledge. Not everyone will try and seek out the facts before making judgement as you did. I don't understand hatred.

My background; I come from a strong socialist background, my father's religion was humanity, his people were the working man (whatever colour there maybe). My folks always had friends of all colours, we mixed well with everyone. I never experienced racism until the last few years, on both sides. I never knew the extent to which it exists until now. Such a shame.......as religiously we have so much common ground;

We believe in one god, Mary - immaculate conception, ***** - the resurrection, the afterlife, Adam, isaac, ishmael, noah, jonah....the list goes on. Makes me angry why we can't come together on our similarities, I do not know!

The similarities between Jews and Muslims are even greater, yet they hate each other even more! I truly don't understand.

I grew up in London. My Grandad (Mum's Dad) had a greengrocery stall in a market in Hackney. He was part Portuguese Jew. He spoke market speak, cockney slang and yiddish. My Dad, worked at a Kosher meat market (no he wasn't Jewish). He learned Arabic and Swahili during the war. I grew up with all these words being used and took them for granted. They were a colourful family but your post made me think:- I know my Grandad used to make racist remarks about the Negroes in the area. My Grandad was of the school that when abroad or speaking to foreigners anywhere, the tecnique is to shout to make yourself understood. But it didn't make me think in a racist way. When some joined our school, I was happy to meet them, they were interesting and accepted. Then some Cypriots came and once again, they were interesting and accepted. The time it hit the fan and I realised what racism was all about and that I needed to make a choice was when I was 13. Two Ugandan Asians joined our school, quiet clean studious and respectful. Soon I heard nasty comments, it made my cheeks burn. Then I heard that there was a plan to beat them up after school. This was being led by someone who had problems of his own at home and had behavioural problems and was having to take drugs for it all. That is a bit irrelevant, but suffice it to say that HE wasn't a happy person and maybe he thought he would gain brownie points by bashing them up. I have to point out here that I was a shy person who tended to keep her head down and people watch. Its stood me in good stead over the years. When the school bell went, we all poured out of the school and I followed Yakub and Ayub, there was a crowd (I lived in utterly the wrong direction). We all walked along, maybe a quarter of a mile when the troubled thug stepped in front of them and pushed one in the chest. I shot forward and used some surprisingly bad language, I must have said a lot, shocked the life out of him and he backed off and the crowd disbanded. It was all rather awkward and I dont remember how things finished (but there was no fight) and I headed off home. I half expected reprisals, but I seemed to go up in some people's expectation.

For me it is utterly wrong to hate someone you dont know. OR hate them when you know them but just because of their religion. BTW, I have worked with Muslims, some I liked and some I didn't, it had nothing whatsoever to do with their religion.

I have never stopped finding foreigners interesting.

Wow Lynne! What a lovely story..,How brave you were! Interesting how, despite your discription of your G'father you knew the wrong in what was happening. Your elders obviously taught you the importance of tolerance and acceptance. X.

Such a shame about the Ugandan boys as they had already faced so much persecution from Edi, hence their migration.

I'm in your camp, I love people being around people of different backgrounds. Find cultures and the difference in social norms, the way different cultures have evolved so interesting. Life would be so boring if we where all exactly the same.....stepford wives! Lol

Not brave at all. It was easy, I just couldn't NOT do it. I didn't have to make myself follow them, my legs just took me, LOL

It's such a significant thing, for you to remember from your chdhood x. I can actually picture you!!

You know my dad and aunts came here from Kashmir in the late 50-60's and speak so highly of the people, there willingness to befriend and help them. I love those old stories. Seems the old people were much more excepting, and in actual fact welcomed the new workforce arriving to re-build the country post war.

All this terror in the world now had distorted people's perception.

The trouble is, people read the sensationalist crap in the newspapers, it can cause a certain mindset. Then they only remember the bad foreigners. Add to that that generations of children have grown up experiencing racist treatment and they resent it, UK is home for them and they feel they belong and so the treatment they get is totally out of order to them, so they rebel. Its a depressing picture. Some areas are worse than others. Having said all I have said, IF it is true that some areas in the UK are run by Muslims, then that is bang out of order. Us expats here in Turkey, wouldn't get away with it and I really cant understand why its allowed in the UK. IF its being allowed in the UK.

It certainly is a deprresing picture, as the racism exists on both sides. I think there's the crap in the media manipulating people's mindset, then there's all the segregation, that doesn't help. They don't make any effort to mix, learn the language or even try to understand the culture. That doesn't help and creates more tension. I don't have any knowledge to comment on Muslims running certain areas, however, they make it look so by remaining insulated.

Yes, I understand. I know its racism on both sides. It takes all sorts. But I have to say that some people need floating away from shore on an exploding island......

They certainly do my friend. The rate at which the world is globalising its actually in everyone's interest to be less afraid of other races. The problem is too many people think that theirs is the only way to be.

Gosh Lynne that is such a great post - and ditto to all your comments.

I got bullied mercilessly at school by a guy who - it turned out - had a crush on me - and being awful to me was his way of dealing with emotion. I wasn't too unhappy to discover he went to prison for a bit (drugs - obviously an unhappy person) - but has now found his path and is becoming a great sculptor. So there is hope for (almost) everyone :)

And love the exploding island comment.

Busy - well done you for getting your hands on Precious! Gorgeous :D

Omg! so much negativity on social media. So many 'friends' status' are anti-myslim and anti-foreigners. The current emotions of the people are being used by silly fascist parties like to promote their own scumbag agendas. A shame people are letting themselves be manipulated in this way.

Morning busy,

little precious looks wonderful :) did you appreciate driving her like he would? ;) I lived over the road to a guy once with a maserati and he looked after it so much, His wife had a white range rover. They both were lovely people and were the only ones that made my time there comfortable, the other neighbours...well horrible springs to mind.

hows the weighins going? Do you do weekly?
