Cali Sweden's Diary

I think before we never noticed the way foods affected us. When we felt tired, hungry etc, we just took it as normal, and it was time to eat again, or get something quick into the system. It's seriously like a drug effect. Gotta get it in your system quick to make you feel better. But the more you eat it, the more you need, without even realizing it.

We're now more sensistive to the way high GL foods effect us, since with low GL foods we're always so energetic and happy. Also now we're more aware of the effects and what causes them and why.

I'm always so shocked at the cr*p foods Americans come up with. I'm not trying to bash my own people, but I agree with you Plum. It's just insane the combos of things that are back home. Like Deep fried butter, or cola, or twinkies or oreos. It's just ewwwwww.

I don't understand what soapbox moment was. I haven't heard of it, and I looked it up in my books and nothing there. Yes, I have a book called "Divided by a Common Language" and a dictionary of Idioms. I used to use them for my job years ago.

It didn't surprise him, as we're planning to have kids hopefully in a year or two :) It's something we've always talked about.

I guess some of my shock at American food 'creations' is reserved for stuff that has been invented (and why should food be 'invented'? it's food! it should not require specialist technology) after I moved away in 1995. For example, I might eat an Oreo once a year, or some Doritos, just for a bit of nostalgia. But I would never ever buy deep fried butter or bacon jam. Yeuch.

Thank you for the link Plum :)

Okay, now you have to tell me about these invented foods. I'm very curious. Maybe I've been away from home too long.

Really? Deep fried butter - wouldn't it melt? Excuse my naivete.

Is this like the often-heard-about-but-never-seen deep fried Mars bars in the UK? I would actually love to see these for the sheer grossness. A bit like a horror movie - you don't want to watch but can't help yourself!

It's made making pancakes way too lazy now.

But the sad thing is I've seen pancake batter for American style pancakes and Swedish style pancakes in a bottle here. You just shake and fry on a pan. It's really sad I thought, since whipping up a batch of homemade pancakes is really easy.

How To Make Fried Butter - YouTube Here you go Ashie. This is how you make deepfried butter. I don't encourage it, but you have to know what the bad things are made of so you know.

Oh yeah there's also deep fried Kool-aid. It's just gross what they serve at County and State fairs.

Thanks, Cali. <quickly exits to see if I have any butter> NOT :D

I am so not even tempted to try it. I think I'd probably get sick eating it after eating low GL now.

Plum, you were so right about the weight gain I had the other day. This morning I jumped on the scale and behold, I lost 1.6 lbs from yesterday, just need to lose .2 lbs now to get rid of all the weight I gained from the Korean food. You weren't kidding about the food taking long time to digest. Let's just say I had way more fiber than I usually do on low GL.

good news that you lost the weight gained Cali! I was interested in what you were saying about fibre, so I looked back at your last couple of weeks food entries, and I think you're probably not getting enough fibre normally. So then when you eat a super fibre rich meal like your Korean meal, it ends up passing through your digestive system super super slowly. Maybe try gradually upping your fibre intake ?

Thank you Ruth :)

Since eating low GL, I've been getting alot of fiber in my diet in Sweden. I think the thing was this time I'm consuming more fiber rich foods, and then over eating the spinach and bean sprouts was like overdose of fiber.

Hmmm ok, maybe I should clear this part up a bit better. A little embarrassing but oh well >_< Fiber really clears out my digestive tract, but spinach if I eat too much, tends to cause a clog in the pipes. Let's just say that with the combined two, I visited the restroom twice a day.

Hooray Cali, that's wonderful news!

On the subject of fiber, based on the advice in my GL books I actually increased my fiber quota on MFP, the amount they wanted me to have was a little bit low. Also I don't mind if I go over it by a sensible amount!

Today's been a not good food day at all. Totally off the wagon on this one. A friend of mine came over and brought over some freshly baked maple pecan danishes, and so I had one. Then we went to Ikea and it was 19:00 so we had to eat, and we ate there. I ate the meatball meal, and even took a strawberry cheesecake. I didn't eat all the food, and only ate half the cheesecake. I realized after the first couple of bites I should have taken the salad, and none of the stuff I ate was really that good tasting compared to the low GL foods.

Ohhhh nooooooo, I'm going to be paying for this on weigh in day. At least exercise it went okay. I was able to squeeze in my walk in between the crazy raining today. Though with the black dark clouds hoovering above me waiting to pour down on me, it made me walk really fast, so I got my 30 minutes walk done in 25 minutes. My legs were throbbing badly when I got home, even my poor dog was out of breath. Amazing what a little motivation can do to make you move so quickly. I wasn't able to do all my yoga today, as my friend came to visit. But I got half my yoga done, at least it was the hardest part :).

Breakfast: Oat porridge with fiber, strawberries, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, milk, and agave syrup.

Snack: 1 piece dark chocolate. Maple pecan danish with two cups of rooibos tea.

Lunch: A little bit of last night's leftover, grilled pork, mixed rice/oat/barley, and salad.

Dinner: Ikea meatball meal, and 3/4 strawberry cheesecake, with lingon drink.

Exercise: 25 minutes fast walk, pushups, crunches, and 33 minutes yoga.

Cali, you had a good breakfast and lunch and got some good exercise in today (I like the image of you and your dog powerwalking to beat the rain). Take the rest as your 20% and hang in there until weigh-in to see what happens. I can never resist IKEA meatballs myself!

It was a small break inbetween the rain. There was a circle in the clouds and I was able to see the sun. But as we started walking the winds kicked up and the clouds started to close in, and it got colder and darker. It must have been a sight me and my dog powerwalking it. >_< My legs are still sorta funny feeling. My guy told me to just imagine everyday was like today, but it's just not the same without the actual threat right above my head:p

Thank you Plum, for making me feel better about the food today. I love GL, but I have to say it has ruined a lot of foods I used to love eating. I guess that's a good thing :) Now all those bad foods just aren't as yummy anymore.

Come tomorrow night, I'm going to be praying to the weight scale gods for a good weigh in Tuesday when I wake up >_<

I know what you mean about the foods you used to love. If I'm going to have something off-plan now I really think about whether I am likely to enjoy it and if I'm not sure then I might as well choose something else!

I think your OH has a good idea as long as he doesn't follow after you with a watering can to provide motivation! ;)

I dont think you did too badly today, especially since you were out of routine. And I hear you on the legs pumping away while rain threatens - I had the same problem today! :)
