Diary: Shroomfest - episode 2 - Experiencing the evil maintenance. :-)

You're not alone with struggling with this, Lostris. I feel just like you do and am trying to think like KD. Do you think if we ask her nicely, she will adopt us? ;)

LOL. Only just seen this :D

Realistically speaking I can't. My maintenace kcals are 1545 (no joke) because I have high body fat % and just not burning much.

How tall are you and how do you know what your body fat is?

This really is hard for me to get my head around. I know that might sound silly, it might not but... it's hard to change habits that have formed during the years I guess. Will do my best!
Yeah, I know. Rome wasn't built in a day. It does take time. Hey...I'm still learning now. You'll get there as long as you keep an open mind to different ways of viewing things and keep practising :)

My CDC has a high tec expensive scale that measures your body fat with electronic shock. (Not allowed for pregnant people or people with pacemaker/any sort of electronic equips on them).

It measures waterweight, fatweight and resistance (1500 euro). Also gives me my BMR / maintenance kcals and following those I've not gained but upping it makes me gain.

Hiya,

Yep guess so. I really want to learn and am trying to read as much as I can on the web etc about this 'issue'. ;) Learning new things everyday...

I have those. Do visceral fat too, which is brill....but all these gadgets are very unreliable. You are supposed to just use them to see the trend.

Okay...so can you tell me you body fat and age, height etc. You can pm me if you like.
and following those I've not gained but upping it makes me gain.
It may be that 1500+cals is your limit. It may be that you have done too much cardio type exercise in the past and lowered your metabolic rate and will take a bit of time before you can 'up' it again, or it could be because you are teeny, like Porgeous. Think that was her level for ages (or even now!)

But...if 1500 cals is your lot, then that's it. It has nothing to do with the mindset of maintenance or how you view food.

Ohhh.. hrm. Still worried though. More below ;)

I'm 1m72 my body fat according to her scales last time was 32% equal to 22.4kilograms of fat. (could change to imperial but I always worry it'll change, it's never a whole nr when I change it ... ) I'm 21 years old. On some days moderately active some days I hardly do anything.

I'm not tiny nor have I done a serious amount of work out stuff. I'm annoyed because everywhere I look it says at least 1800 and I'll gain when I go above 1590ish.:mad:

32% body fat is borderline obese, unhealthy. It bugs me so much that it's still this high. I'd have to get to 50kg and be annorexic before it gets anywhere normal like this which I don't see happening, ever.

Juuust.. stressin... :wave_cry: I thought I'd be okay and healthy after this diet but the body fat thing suggests otherwise.

But...if 1500 cals is your lot, then that's it. It has nothing to do with the mindset of maintenance or how you view food.

True, but it is quite annoying. My roommates cook here and they cook dinner between 800-1000 kcal. I never know what they'll cook beforehand and it sometimes leaves hardly any to have during the day which plain annoys me but I can't go off eating something different because it's not what I want to do. :(

Sigh.

32% body fat is borderline obese, unhealthy.

Okay, bodyfat is healthy
fatranges.jpg

And that is taking the scales as 100% correct, which is unlikely.
On some days moderately active some days I hardly do anything.
Except cycle for miles, very fast ;)
I'm annoyed because everywhere I look it says at least 1800 and I'll gain when I go above 1590ish.:mad:
But it wont be fat. You know that. It would take a fair time for a pound of fat to show on the scales.
Juuust.. stressin... :wave_cry: I thought I'd be okay and healthy after this diet but the body fat thing suggests otherwise.
This is such a shame that you are stressing :( You've done so well, you are healthy and fit, you have pink jeans! What more can a gal ask for ;) But you are stressed about it because you are scared it wont stay this way :( You are missing out on such a great time in your life instead of enjoying your moment.

Ack. I can really understand this. I wouldn't want to eat anything different either...though I might be happy with a smaller portion.

Anyway, how can we get your calories up? If it was me, I'd do more resistance..but I've mentioned that already. It's the only way you are going to get more lean stuff and burn more fat. The bike riding can help, but it's nowhere near as effective and besides, your body has probably got used to the cycling so doesn't have to work too hard when doing it.

Also, if it was me, I'd up my calories by 100 a day for a couple of weeks...so about 1700 cals. Any gain on the scales wouldn't reflect fat gain unless you do that for months and months. You might get a water gain in the first few days, but it will probably settle down. Scared?

This is a time to enjoy your life. You've done the hard work, now you need to experiment a little to get the most out of your body and life :)

Sorry, me again

Couple more things. If you go ahead with the experiment of doing 1700 cals a day for 2 weeks, and your true metabolic rate is 1590, that will mean in terms of fat you could put on 2/5th of a pound (regardless of what the scales say). That would be the worst case scenario. That's got to be worth a try hasn't it.

Another thing.......
Also gives me my BMR / maintenance kcals and following those I've not gained but upping it makes me gain.

It's rare for these types of scales to give BMR and maintenance kcals.

According to my calculations your BMR would be in the 1550-1600 bracket (I'm assuming your BMI on the side bar is correct).

But that would be your BMR, not your maintenance calories. In other words, the amount of calories you would need if you were in a coma. So do your CDCs scales give you BMR and Maintenance cals as two different numbers?

Oh thank god. :cry:I thought 32 was the cut off but it isn't, 33 is. Still a bit high but not unhealthy, okay, good! :D

Except cycle for miles, very fast ;)

Got a point there :eek::eek::eek:

But it wont be fat. You know that. It would take a fair time for a pound of fat to show on the scales.

That is a relief! I will weigh myself at family scales tomorrow (can't weigh in at studentplace in 2 weeks haha) and then start with 1700 kcal for 2 weeks; see where it takes me. Guess it can't hurt thaaaat much.

This is such a shame that you are stressing :( You've done so well, you are healthy and fit, you have pink jeans! HAHAH @ pink jeans :D:D:D They're so fab! I'll make pics of me with them on haah!!

I think you're right though, yes, I am very stressed and worried about this. I'm pretty obsessive in my caloriecounting and when I have a blip I have a bit of a panic episode thinking I'll regain it all instantly.:sigh: I know, realistically speaking, that's not possible... but still.

I should worry less but I'm like.. the Queen of Worry Isle. :p

Ack. I can really understand this. I wouldn't want to eat anything different either...though I might be happy with a smaller portion.

Hiya,

I tend to eat about 1/2 to 3/4 of what they have but it tends to big me I can't calc calories for it. Don't tell them though coz they laugh at me for it

Anyway, how can we get your calories up? If it was me, I'd do more resistance..but I've mentioned that already. It's the only way you are going to get more lean stuff and burn more fat. Okay, now this may be a stupid question!! xD What's resistance I can do myself?? Sit ups and such? And raising a bottle of water with my arms.

I know I can go to the gym but I really do know myself... I might just sign up and not go. I'm lazy like that. Any good ones you know of, off-gym? :p

Also, if it was me, I'd up my calories by 100 a day for a couple of weeks...so about 1700 cals. Any gain on the scales wouldn't reflect fat gain unless you do that for months and months. You might get a water gain in the first few days, but it will probably settle down. Scared?

Yes ;) But I do think I should try this.. probably really would be for my own good!

This is a time to enjoy your life. You've done the hard work, now you need to experiment a little to get the most out of your body and life :)

Thanks KD! :D

Sorry, me again

Omg, you stalker...........

That would definately be worth a try yes.. Reckon I should really try it but it does seem kind of scary.

Oh.. Wait. It doesn't. But my CDC said I could eat max the amount of calories the paperthing scale spit out said... it's the BMR! Maybe she just said something stupid because now that you mention it that doesn't make sense.. If I x1,2 it for sedatary (sp?) I get around 1900... She never told me that though and there was only 1 number.

*sighs*

Time to crank up my metabolism it seems.

Thanks for all the info KD, it's really helpful don't know what I would've done without all this info. Will let you know how it goes!!!

By the way I don't know that much about exercise but the taebo workouts I do seem to be a combo of cardio and resistance (hence my supertoned arms and thighs of steel hahahah), I guess that most exercise moves that say they'll tone you up will help you to build up some muscle? Stuff like squats, lunges, crunches, press-ups etc. You can get those resistance bands too, or light weights like dumbbells (I tried the water bottle/tins of beans thing but kept dropping them onto my toes - ouch!)

LOL. Should have seen me at 3:00am this morning. Happily sleeping away, dreaming lubberly dreams and I suddenly wake up. Sat bolt upright and thought...Blimey...but the scales are reporting her BMR rather than the AMR.

Had to tell myself that it really wasn't necessary to get up, turn on comp, log on etc to post about it. It really could wait until a normal time :D

Great quoting skills there Lostris :D

HAHAH @ pink jeans :D:D:D They're so fab! I'll make pics of me with them on haah!!

Yay...need pictures  Pink jeans by proxy as I'd look baaaadd in them :(

Many thousands of years ago, when I was young, I got skinny (probably a bit too skinny:eek:) after my very first diet. I could have had fun and enjoyed it, but I worried about it. Worried so much, I ended up eating too much again.

It's about getting a balance. Yes, you do have to be careful, but it's fun. Really enjoy your new beginning, don't spoil it stressing ;)

Good stuff from Serena here. Yep, squats, lunges, throw a few housemates around the room. That sort of stuff :D

Awww you poor thing!!!!!!! :giggle:

Waking up from sleep over this, KD I greatly respect this amount of support.:p:D

I'm getting quite good at it aren't I??

I'll try making some tomorrow, hope I don't forget!!

Many thousands of years ago,
HAHAHAH. Oh, wait, you really are ancient aren't you..... ? ;)

Yea. It's a bit of an evil vicious circle. I'm doing quite good when I don't think about food too much really.. I was worried about other things today and I ate quite well today without worrying and at a total of about 1350kcal (I calced just now).

It's when I start to obsess and worry and tell myself I cant have anything when it goes bad.

 Doing my best ma'am.

I did notice that when I don't stress and think about food all the time I do much better than when I do........

Ah well!

Good stuff from Serena here. Yep, squats, lunges, throw a few housemates around the room. That sort of stuff :D

HAHAH!! Deffo like throwing housemates around Does running after a mouse count too? Oh wait, darn, thats cardio...... :D

LOL :D

Hey you can post your own "mix-a-mouse" thread now, and when everyone corrects you - "I think you are referring to mousse" - you can tell them they've got it wrong and that no, you don't want to be putting it into the blender thank you very much :Na_Na_Na_Na:

HAHAHHA!!

EWWWWWWWWW MOUSE MOUSSE!!!! HAHAH!! Gross. I can see it's little tail sticking out, like one of thse fruits peole have on cocktails hahahah!! :D:D:D

A Bloody Mouse cocktail ;)

Poor thing ;)

The score is still 5 - 0 for the mouse. Hes recently moved to my house mates room, she's bought a mouse friendly trap which I hope works. He seems resistant to the snap-i-kill-you-when-you-eat-pb-idea. Bet he didnt listen in TrapsGetYouKilled-Class.. he seems to not get killed. Darn lil bugger. ;)

Mouse mousse :8855: Wonder if they do it in lactose free? Stick in in the "new flavour suggestions" thread - I'm sure there'll be someone with bad enough cravings to go "ooohh yum..."

LOL.

Wonder how many things I can think of .... hmm..

So. I'd like to share something. I had around 1700 kcal yesterday and scales show a 2lb loss this morning.......

WHAT THE HELL!???!
