Hi all,

Im starting a diary here as i really need the support and help to help me shift this weight.

i have previously done a vlcd for 3 months took a break and could never get back on it then tried weight watchers and calorie counting etc and have put back on 2 of the 3 stone i lost.

i have read the first part of the Atkins book and plan to finish it off later today.

i m going to weigh myself and boots or superdrugs tomorrow and then every monday morning after that, i can be a daily weigher which is not good for me plus my scales give a different reading depending where in the bathroom they are placed lol

im going to clear my kitchen of anything i shouldnt eat and pop over to sainsburys and get a few bits to get me started untill i get my head around the carb and what i can have etc

looking forward to getting to know you all :)

Welcome Nyssa... This is a great forum and I've got loads of support from the guys here... Good luck on you journey! :)

Thank you Alpaca, i think one of my biggest struggles will be with coffee and diet fizzy, i am planning on going cold turkey and stopping altogether as i am looking at this as a lifestyle change, i normally have sweetener and skimmed milk in my coffee and drink quite a few cups during the day especially at work to help get me through.

Well done on your losses you have done great :)

Unsweetened soya milk is perfect and I make a latte as I have a coffee habit... Also use cream but I'm bad at keeping the quantity down so I'm best not buying it! Lol ...

I just use normal coffee - I think decaf might be better although I hear the processing makes it a little more carb-y... I'm afraid I'm not much of an expert - there are others on the forum that are far better at it than me! Lol

Well I shall try to limit my coffee for now then but have it when I need it to see how I get on. Il be on induction and I know not to have more than 20g if carbs a day, is that carbs as in any carbs or the net carbs and if it's net how do I work it out?

Net carbs don't exist in the uk, they're an American labeling thing. In the uk just go by what it says next to 'carbohydrates' on the menu.

Read labels, use google - but the best way I've found to track my carbs is an Internet and phone app called myfitnesspal.

Basically if you're eating unprocessed meat, veggies from the allowed list, butter, mayo, cream and cheese you'll be fine :) try googling cauliflower rice and cauliflower mash too - lifesavers.

Thank you that's great I already use mfp and always read the labels, I've heard of the rice and mash but never made it but can see it being great with some steak and salad.

Just come back from shopping to get a few bits and forgot butter and the allowed sweetener, oh well il get it tomorrow.

I'm raring to go now I really can't wait :)

Good luck! It will become second nature... I'm always reading labels now! Can take me ages to buy shopping! Lol

in the Atkins book it says to find the net carbs you deduct the fibre value from the carbohydrate value, is that right? I just tend to stick to whole foods. Finding things like sausage is a minefield but I have a freezer full of ones to try now (hope i like them lol) I have read the Atkins book over and over but i still lack the know how to jump from induction to owl, maybe one day i will master it, but i like the induction foods so guess its just my laziness! i will try the app too need all the help i can get thank you for putting that one here!

No no please don't deduct anything from the carb count on your labels!!! Net carbs are - American only-

In the UK fibre has already been deducted from the carb count and is listed seperately. If you deduct it you'll be deducting it twice and hugely underestimating the carbs in your food. We don't need to deduct anything, just go with what it says next to carbohydrates on the label.

And yes the books are very confusing on this and it's an error a lot of people make but they've never seen fit to correct it for the English print run of the books.

omg thats terrible i am so glad i mentioned it then because i would have been doing that! not that i do eat much in the way of packaged foods its just things like sausages etc thankyou for telling me!!

It's a really common issue, I remember the same confusion the first time I did Atkins when I was 18. Amazed they've never fixed it.

you would think they would! i remember the first time i tried Atkins was about 5 or 6 years ago, it had just started to become popular after the Atkins Answer packs being sold on sky tv, the new shopping channels etc. but i believe the mainstays of the diet industry who scare monger about Atkins prevent it from being as big over here, so because of that we suffer and are not so catered for. I would love an accessible shop where you can visit and get some of the atkins products rather than finding the odd very expensive thing here and there or having to buy online.

Best to avoid the Atkins products really, especially the bars. Theyre made by a compsny looking for profit not a doctor helping emwith wrighloss and atkins would have banned 99 percent of them on his originsl plan! I know what you mean about wishing we had more stuff here while in anerica the supermarkets are full of 'low carb' fake products, but im on anerican forums and the oeople who actually lose weight have learned to cut those things out of their diet and eat clean and green. We're better off without them!

I understand where you are coming from there, its just that you see some nice recipes on the american sites but cant get the ingredients

Found you! Good luck chick xxx

Amazon.com and lowcarbmegastore have some of the esoteric ingredients asked for - but a lot of the complicated recipes I see seem to add too many different sugar alcohols and weird things. Was there anything specific you were looking for?

Do you know what tablet sweeteners are ok to use? I can't remember the ones I have at home but I always use tablet ones.

I would like to cut them out eventually but if i can I have a cup of tea or coffee with a sweetener that will
Normally keep me satisfied untill bed time or next meal.

Today had started ok ish I didn't get up early enough so didn't have time to prepare anything for today soo had 2 boiled eggs in work and a Tuna mayo salad bowl from subway for lunch, I know the mayo has 1g of carbs in it per serving as its lite mayo but the nutritional info including the salad says 9g of carbs so not sure if correct or not and I've snacked on a bag of pork scratchings in work which are 1.3g of carbs.

I'm not really sure what to have for dinner tonight I will look through meal ideas here later but I'm guessing it will be another salad of some sort.
