Flippin 'eck!! You'd have to be REALLY ill!!! Can you get insurance to cover these things?? xx

LOL Lisa! We 'flippin' 'ecked' at the same time!! :D xx

 60euro to see the doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erm yeah you can definitely get VHI health insurance but I think that only covers going private not public.

I guess it is a lot of money but tbh I'm just so used to it. If you were on social welfare you'd have a medical card so could go for free but we both work so thats not an option lol x

Yeah, 60 euro is ave for a GP visit and it might only be ten minutes!! Then sky's the limit in the pharmacy. 40% of the pop qualify for free care like nhs. The rest of us pay and/ or have health insurance but it's expensive. I paid 1200 this year but it wont refund everything I spend. It really bugs me sometimes!

Emma, we both posted at the same time!! Yeah rip off is right!

LOL certainly is Molly!!!

OMG That's ...... crumbs I can't even think of a good word to use!!! I never realised.... I knew things were more expensive (only gotta look at LT!) but never realised about medical care. What about if you need an operation or something? DO you have to fork out for that? And what about having a baby and all the ante-natal care etc??

Jeez!! Can't believe it! xx

If you wanted to go private you would pay or if you had health insurance that would cover it or part of it but it would be free or smaller cost if you just waited to go public. When I had Jack I went public and it was fine and free, my friend went semi private in the same maternity hospital and had pretty much the same experience as me but it cost her thousands. When your pregnant all pregnancy related GP visits are free but not the first one to confirm pregnancy and referral to maternity hospital.

Remember I collapsed a few months ago and was taken to hospital by ambulance? Shortly after I got a bill in the post for €100! Nice!

No not nice at all!!!! :(

What about operations? If you needed your appendix out or something?? Sorry for all the questions but I'm interested  xx

Hmmm same thing I think if you go public its free but private you pay through the nose. Jack had two operations last year and we didnt have to pay..........although my mums best friend works in the accounts dept of the hospital so I think she diddled something!

Oh well that's handy ... good friend to keep ;) xx

Basically healthcare falls into two categories. The 40% of the pop who qualify on a means test get free healthcare both primary care and all hospital care. The rest of the population must pay for their primary care i.e. GP, outpatients, a&e ( the bill Emma got), pharmacy etc but are entitled to " free" hospital care. Many of this group will opt to pay health insurance as there are long waiting lists for many specialities. It could take a two year wait for a hip replacement but if you have insurance it might take four or six weeks. We have a lot of private hospitals and many of the consultants in them also do clinics in the public hospitals. We refer a lot here to the two tier health system here and there is much debate about the last govts plans to co locate private and public hospitals which was driving more people to private care and having to pay for it themselves.

Wow .... Can't believe I never knew this. Thanks Molly xx
