Funny you had the Moussaka and I just bumped a recipe for it as I need to use the aubergines up I have in the fridge. How did yours come out? I'm thinking to do mine with the Quorn mince I have in the freezer.

Congrats on your brilliant loss chick!! I knew you were due a big one as you've been so angelic AND doing all that 'body magic' (SW make me laugh, their names for things!! LOL!) I forgot you were going to France for all that time!! Just make sure you enjoy and relax on the food front, but that's not to say you won't be able to make some wise choices and limit the damage!! I don't think you'll see this til you arrive home anyway so hope you enjoyed! XXXXXXXXXX

Hi hun, the moussaka went down a treat, both with myself and dh, which is always a great litmus test!! I would recommend you grill the aubergine slices well before assembling the dish, and make sure you have plenty of potato slices! I made the topping with 3 egg yolks, v.f.f fromage frais, nutmeg and chopped parsley and it tasted lovely Did you see the quorn moussaka recipe on the SW website? I'm going to try that way too!!X

Hev, how do you get 2 breaks on a short shift? are they 15 mins each? We only get 2 on a 12.5 hour shift and it's just not enough time to eat and let it settle :( xx

Hey sugarlips, it really depends on how busy the unit is!! If all works out, on a 12.5 hr shift (which is my norm) we usually get 20 mins 10/11 am (ish), then 20 mins for lunch, so around 1/2/3pm, then another 20 mins around 5/6/7pm! But it varies so much! Sometimes we only get 2 short ones, just grabbing 10 mins at a time just to get away, and other times we have 3 breaks and stretch them out to 30 mins if the unit is quiet, but that doesn't happen that often!!LOL! It is frustrating when you don't have time to sit and enjoy your food properly, especially if you have to prepare/heat stuff up first! You're a brave so-and-so going into this nursing lark ya know!! We're all mad to be doing it- good job I love it!! ps Do staff on your ward get paid for the full 12.5 hrs or just for 11.5 hrs, because if the latter, you're entitled to an hours worth of breaks (in an ideal world lol!) On a short shift the morning break is discretionary, but you're entitled to a 1/2 hr lunch break if not being paid for your break!!XXXXX

Our unit is quite flexible with break times- as long as the patients are safe and being looked after, people don't clock-watch too much! But if we're really hectic, we only take a few mins each anyway, just so we all get to have our breaks! I find I get really dry and parched in work because of the air con so I always take a 2l bottle of water with me from my fridge at home and try to drink the bottle if I'm on a short shift, and refill it and drink a total of 4l if on a long day or night shift! I'm glad you're enjoying your medical ward! Hectic I bet! I'm in CITU not CCU, so it's post cardiac surgery rather than the medical side of things. What's nice about it is that we deliver ALL the care, from washing, bum wiping, rubbing cream into people, sucking their toes (OK the last one was a joke!!LOL!), feeding patients, to running blood gases, analysing them, acting on them, monitoring them both invasively and non-invasively, doing hourly or more frequent obs along with fluid balance on our big complex charts, drawing up lots of 50ml syringes of drugs for syringe pumps and other IVs, giving blood, blood products and other fluids, managing pain (sometimes a challenge in itself), performing suction, extubating ventilated patients, assisting with intubations, drain, line, tracheostomy insertions, removing invasive lines and drains, doing dressings, dealing with renal filters and dialysis, plus lots of other machines, and of course dealing with relatives. We're 1 to 1 unless patients are HDU level patients, in which case we can be 1 to 2, so although we can be ridiculously busy with just 1 patient, (I never realised anyone COULD be that busy with 1 patient until I worked in ITU) we can also ensure that everything is done as thoroughly as possible so there is rarely that guilty feeling of neglecting patients or leaving them waiting for too long that I used to have when I worked on a ward! I've been on ITU 10 years now and I don't think I could ever go back to a ward environment!! Any idea what area you'd like to go into?! Anything tickled your fancy so far?X
