Jane's Diary

Up a pound this morning but I know that's just down to eating yesterday so I'm unconcerned. I have fasted today as I've been swimming and not had chance to eat so I might as well carry on. Must admit to being tired today and 20 lengths of breaststroke was hard slog! Another thing I've noticed is that I'm not going to the loo for a you know what. In fact it's five days! That must make a difference. My body must be using virtually everything I consume!

Just having a cup of marmite. I weighed out the heaped teaspoon into my mug and it was 20g! That equates to about 50 cals. It's very nice but maybe I've made it too strong. I always assumed a marmite drink was much less.

Gosh! Not surprised that you feel tired after swimming and fasting as well as the "other" problem!
Good going tho' and fair play to you for the effort. Hope that 1lb soon goes as I'm sure it will.
Just one thing..that's a lot of Marmite to use..and you do know it's very high in salt so it could be the culprit in making your weight go up?
Love it myself especially on toast.
Keep up the good work you are doing so well.

Thanks Emmaline

Yes, I will cut down on the marmite in my next drink. I will have a rounded teaspoon instead of heaped! I don't normally have it and thought it'd be too weak.

I think my thyroxine dose is maybe a bit low and hence the tiredness. It's such a battle to get it increased though.

I've had 550 calories today. I will now fast on Saturday and then I'm going to do 4:3 so it will be fasting mon, wed and Friday and weekends eating normally. I've decided that if I reach a plateau I've nowhere to go to kick start it. If I do 4:3 then I always have the option of reverting to alternate days. I will see how it goes for a month or two and then probably go to 5:2 when I'm in India.

100 mcg. I've been on that dose for about a year now. I have a few spare 25 mcg ones so I'm going to take one of those every other day and see if that helps. I have odd days when I'm full of beans and others when I can hardly move. You probably understand what I mean. At least I never have brain fog anymore! I've read that dosage can be decreased with weight loss. I assume that's just because body mass makes a difference. Has your dose lowered as you've lost weight?

Again I have 1/2 lb to go to get to my one stone loss!

Today is an eating day. I've been giving fasting some thought........

To maintain weight you can eat 14,000 calories a week. For each pound of fat lost you need to cut back by 3,500 cals per week. I would really like to average 2lb per week loss so I can eat 7,000 calories a week to achieve this. I have, therefore, decided to have three fast days at 500 each, three normal days at 1,500 and one day at a 1,000. That would give me my 7,000. I don't want to risk my body going into starvation mode and from reading on the web I think that it shouldn't at 1,500 cals whereas if I did 1,000 every day it might. Lots of other people seem to follow 1,500 a day and if, on my 1,000 day I want to go to 1,500 it shouldn't make that much difference. I will see how it goes and then readjust it after Christmas when I will revert to 1lb per week.

Hope you follow that if you've bothered to read it.....whoever you are

1,315 calories today. I shall make a note in my diary so I keep to 7,000 in seven days.

Our daughter and family are coming for a meal on Sunday so I need a few extra calories in hand to make up for Sunday's excesses. So I now have 185 more calories to add to Sunday

I do know what you mean about the energy levels fluctuating.. really annoying isn't it?!
I started off many years ago on 100 and it was increased to 150 about 8yrs ago. The doc was going to increase it further but decided not to which tbh I do prefer as it can have some drastic side effects... my sister has lost a lot of hair thro' having to take a high dose.
As to decreasing it due to weight loss.. that is the one thing that has not been altered. I was classed as diabetic which is now cleared and of course other things like blood tests have shown better results which are all good.

As to the info re maintaining weight ... I would put on literally pounds at 2000 a day. It does depend so much on what sort of lifestyle, ability and age an individual has. Personally I am unable to exercise very much and at 79 the body does slow down so much as well so my cal intake at the mo' is 1200 a day and 60 carbs which is working .. but slowly!

Sounds like a lovely Sunday is in store... enjoy! :)

I weighed very late today. By the time hubby and I had changed the bed, showered etc it was gone 10! What a lazy bones I am at times. Anyway jumped on the scales and now have 1/4 lb to lose to reach my stone. However, if I'd weighed at 8.30 ish I'm sure it'd be more like 3/4 lb.

I entered my details into my fitness pal and to lose 2lb a week that reckons I can have 1,200 calories a day (8,400 per week) which is more than I'd allowed! I could therefore do five days at 1,500 and two at 500 so I still get the fasting benefit. At least it gives me some leeway.

Today is an eating day, although hubby has just told me he's fasting!!

Thanks Emmaline

My doctor is loath to increase min as I've had a heart attack. I've tried the alternate day 25mcg and my hearts not been racing so I'm hopeful that'll perk me up a bit.

When I calorie counted dieted years ago I struggled greatly to lose weight and started on the slimming groups. Whilst I enjoy those immensely for the chatter there i often felt I was paying or a social club! The odd thing is that this time counting calories I'm actually losing. Maybe it's because I wasn't being treated for hypothyroidism, (or subclinical hypothyroidism as the doctors call it!) which I believe I've had for many years. (I actually believe my hypothyroidism led to my heart attack.) Maybe also it's the fasting days. Whatever it is for now it appears to be working.

You've done well to resolve your diabetes. I know you probably avoid sugary things but can you now eat them if you wish? I'm being retested soon as my levels are at the top of the range to just be classed as non diabetic. Hope you follow that garbled sentence .

Btw I'm 58 and have been on thyroid medication for about three years. I had my heart attack three years ago.

Btw I'm now taking 125 mcg thyroxine then 100 mcg alternate days. If I'm better on it I might just buy more next time I'm in Spain or maybe in India at Christmas.

Almost ready to go to bed. I've had 1,453 calories. I used my fitness pal to record what I'd eaten and as that reckons I can eat 1,200 it's showing I'm over! Hopefully I won't go too much over 1,500 tomorrow but Monday will be a fasting day so it'll even out.

I'm looking forward to fasting on Monday, it's so much easier.

Arghh!! 1/4 lb off one stone loss.......again!!! Mind you I have had a couple of eating days and today is probably going to be a big eating day!!

Monday will be a lovely simple fast day so I'm hoping for great things on the weight loss front on tuesday

I'm cooking Rich beef in red wine from The Hairy Dieters cookbook. I've got carrots and broccoli for veg. We have soup for starters plus those rolls that are part baked. Plus an apple flan desert thingy with low fat custard. I will endeavour to weigh and calculate all my calories. Mind you after a glass or two of Cava (i allow 300 cals for half a bottle) that may go out of the window.

I've only had my coffee plus skimmed milk for breakfast at 35 cals total.

Drat that 1/4lb... how annoying! ..but never mind you are doing really well.

Thyroid probs are the worst for making weight loss incredibly difficult... I am very surprised that you are buying your own thyroxine...that's a bit risky in my book. I don't always hold with the old idea of doc knows best as they are so busy they don't have time to really keep up with all the new info out there but extra thyroxine I would have great concerns about. The fact that you were feeling tired etc. is more than likely due to the excess weight... being as how when I was 16.2 I was like that too but even after my loss so far I can honestly say I feel so much better.
As regards the eating sweet stuff..I do (too often tbh) have a binge on my fav chocolate and have tested my blood which has not shown any real diverse effects even a day later.
..and just finally... :D ... I was of the same opinion re the groups.
On one occasion a quite large group had these two women who constantly would turn it into their own show..and it wasn't nice either as they always turned everything into something to do with sex... how many cals in an hours "romp"... all that sort of thing... and the group leader failed to take control of the situation even tho' it was quite evident that most were really fed up with it!

Anyway Jane.. keep up the good work..(and get rid of that Cava.. :party0016:)

Noooo. I don't buy it! I'm prescribed 100mcg. It's just that I know I can buy it abroad if I feel I need a slightly higher dose. My dr is one of those that if your tsh is just below 6 he's happy. Well I know better! To feel really good it needs to be below 1. So it's difficult getting an increased dose. They pay no heed to how I actually feel. I'm sure you've come across the same thing. I've been taking an extra 25 mcg every other day and feel so much better for it. I had a few left from when my dose was lower so after my next test I will probably tell the dr I've taken them.

Ps Emmaline I'm looking forward to my cava

Oh dear! I've done a rough calculation of my calories and its about 2,150. Which according to the fast diet is ok. I'm allowed about 2,100 per day but I really feel this is too much and two days fasting will only give me an incredibly low weight loss! Anyway the beauty of this diet is you can be flexible. It's fasting Monday, Wednesday and Friday from now on. I will adjust my normal eating days as needed.

I need to calculate what I've had over the last three days.

4,858 calories over three days. So that's only 358 over. I can easily save that on Tuesday and Thursday by eating about 1,300 on those days. That will give me 7,500 for the week which is an overall saving of 6,500. Almost 2lb per week.

I've bought some zero noodles and zero rice. I'm not sure i really fancy it. The reviews are not too bad. When I pluck up the courage to eat it I will post a short review!

Hope so Emmaline!

I walked 2.2 miles today and yesterday plus swimming 20 lengths on Thursday and a shorter walk of 1.2 miles on Friday. Hope that helps. I feel so full tonight though. I will jump on the scales tomorrow but I feel as though there will be a big gain. We shall see.......
