JANUARY MONEY CHALLENGE!

Insurance is an expense, and I never used to like paying it but when we got our rescue, no one would insure him as he was over 8 and we only had him with us for 22 months and bless him he cost about £4k in vets fees :(

unfortunately it just doesnt pay to be a loyal customer any more - its always best to shop around for deals when renewing insurance etc.

FYI anyone in need of an interest free credit card to shift your balance on to - Barclays platinum is doing 30 months interest free!! Which is amazing!! I already have one so dont qualify for the deal but thought it would be worth pointing out if anyone was thinking of switching. 2.89% fee applies.

Wow that's brill, I've got a Tesco one for 18mths interest free (I put the ipads on which I had to replace after losing on hols), I thought that was a brilliant offer, but 30mths amazing.

How are people getting on? I am pleased with how I'm going, it's one week till January pay and I'm not struggling so that's good.
Am still deciding what to do about another bank account, couldn't decide whether to go for a second joint or singles fir our needs.
Am doing my saving tins, the challenge one where go to 300 as think it's good to try one with a goal and one where I put random amounts in that will allow myself to open if I feel the time is right!

Haven't been spending much unnecessarily, want to go few shops for few things today though so want to try not to stray too far from the 'list'!

Have got some extra bits of money coming in at mo too so trying to be sensible with those!

0% insertion fees on eBay today.

I'm doing ok - had some unexpected bills but bf has given me his share of the bills etc so instead of making a chunky credit card payment as planned I'm having to spend some on that. But I will make a payment of £50 as every little will help!!

I'm going to list some things to sell on my local fb selling page today and hope someone likes what I have. It's pretty decent stuff I think so fingers crossed!

I'm still doing my savings tin as well although one downside of me not carrying much money around at the moment is that I haven't had much change to put in it.

But my determination is still there so that's a good thing :)

Ours renews in March... I'm dreading what it'll be as Alfie has had to have more treatment over the last year.. The first year it was £15 a month, 2nd year £22, surprisingly in the 3rd year only £23...Think they realised that he's getting the correct treatment for his condition... But had a flare up over the summer so I think it will go up this time

Not sure how old Alfie is, but as my dog older, the premium was jumping up by a lot and the list of what he would be covered for got drastically shorter. We cancelled his insurance and put what we would have paid aside every month into a savings account to pay for any treatment / medication he may have needed in the future. Since he's passed away, my mum's still putting that money aside every month to save for a holiday.

I think m doing ok, I've not spent un-necessarily, I've opened two savings account with my own bank, one for birthdays & one for my special holiday.

Emsie, we both have our own bank account which our wages are paid into and have a joint account for bills, we both transfer money into it. No idea if that helps or not.

He's only 3.... He has an allergy to house dust mites so makes his skin extremely itchy... He's on several tablets every other day as well as immunotherapy injections, plus quite a few other treatments. He's had quite a few tests too... And it all costs a fortune! Don't really mind paying it though as it's all for his quality of life x

Is that with different banks then? Is it right that you can only have one current account with a bank?
Our wages go into a joint account but there's a hefty overdraft on it at mo so don't think can change that

Weve actually got two joint accounts, with different banks, I'm with Barclays & have my own account which we also have a joint account with, hmm, not too sure if that helps.

I tried to make an extra payment on my credit card but it wouldn't let me as it wasn't the minimum amount?! That payment is due to come out on 2nd Feb so do you think i just need to wait and pay it then instead?

Or maybe if I found a branch and went in?

Will be really annoying if I can't easily make additional payments - i think it will test my resolve if i have to make special trips out to the bank all the time!! Grr!

Maybe if you phoned the credit card company, you could make a payment by phone

How is everyone getting on with the challenge?

I`m doing pretty good. Surprised myself just how much I wasted on rubbish!!
Have saved £100 so far

Hi grannieannie.

I'm not doing so well on actual savings but I'm doing really well in cutting down my outgoings. I haven't been spending much at all other than bills and food shopping but my overdraft makes it difficult to save any money I don't spend!

Payday is next week and I plan to carry on as I am and pay off as much debt as possible.

On a positive note, bf found out today that he is getting a tax rebate of £140 :) he is taking £50 to spend on every day things but £90 is going into a savings account either for holiday or a nice meal out for valentines day! :)

How about starting up a new account or take out as much cash as possible
excluding direct debits?
Leave behind say £20, depending on how much the overdraft is and how long you think you
need to clear it.
That way you are paying off the overdraft but it`s not in control of your finances.
I did that a number of years ago. Found it useful to separate the two

I have been toying with the idea of switching my current account but I'm a bit wary since I am overdrawn. I guess I could pay it back bit by bit if I did that rather than drowning in it all the time and not knowing if I am making progress or not.

Definitely worth thinking about - plus some banks give you some cash back for switching which would be a start of paying it back I suppose. Think I'll have a browse tomorrow and compare some accounts.
