Why don't you ask your manager if it's possible to speak to the Head of HR and try and find some solution as it is really important to you to get the time off. Say that you had already spoken to her when you started and she indicated that this wouldn't be a problem. Say that you know this is bad timing but it is something that can't be changed and you are prepared to be flexible at other times to make it up. Also that you wanted to resolve it with your manager if you could as you know that is the proper channel to go through.
