The Red Veggie

Yesterday I had Asda no meat Meatballs - they are £2 a bag (400gms - 20 meatballs) and at the moment they are 2 for £3 -
- 3 syns a pack - and I reheated 10 of them, too many really so OH ate 3 of them - but they were nice - nicer than I expected. Put them in some home made curry sauce. ( Can be microwaved in 2 mins).
Will buy them again.

PS - they are frozen

Hi! Can you have tofu and tempeh on red days? Just thinking it will be change from Quorn and it's not as processed. Just a suggestion and I don't know if you can have it or not, or whether you even like it ;)

Hi PaisleyLove.

Thanks for that. I'm not keen on tofu unless it is a) fried or b) made into chocolate pudding..

I have tried marinating in soy sauce etc and then baking which isn't too bad. I might try that again.

I like tempeh although it is quite hard to get hold off. Do you know syns for tempeh?

Breakfast.

LC sausages and egg muffin with brown sauce mmmmm 2 syns for extra bread and 1 syn for sauce.

Lunch

Quorn steak strips with salad

Banana

Dinner

BNS - roasted with last nights bolognese with added Parmesan 2 x HEA

Eggy cake - sweet cinnamon omelette spread with quark flavoured with vanilla added slice strawberries and blue berries and made into a roulade..mmm

SnaX

Alpen HEB X 2

Oranges, plums

Hi, I thought tempeh was free on green days but wouldn't know on red, sorry :( I can't post any links as yet but Goodness Direct do a frozen tempeh, I get mine from there, also from a site that does it fresh. Have you ever tried grilling or using griddle pan with tofu? You won't use as much oil as you would frying. :)

Thanks for the site - ill have a look.

I have tried grilling and that was ok but not griddle pan. I've tried stir frying but it falls to bits and goes all crumbly..

Mind you I could make tofu burgers....with something like mushrooms or BNS....or even HEB some potatoes...

Gonna check the Interweb..ta v much.

You need a firm tofu (sounds like you are using a silken) to stop it from falling to pieces and get as much water out of it as you can before you cook it too. Pop it on a plate on some kitchen roll and place more on top, weight it down with a pan. Repeat every 15 mins for about an hour. Or you could do that for 15 and then dry fry it before you marinade it. Cut it into thick chunks or slices not tiny ones. It's all about the water content ;)

Hmmmm - I think u maybe right. Looks like I need a health food shop..

Found a recipe "tofu and mushroom burger" and the first ingredient was 100% lean mince beef?!

Anyway all the burger recipes need a binder such as oats, nuts or breadcrumbs so it's not going o be free. I often have only 1Heb so I'll have to use the other on oats or breadcrumbs.

Btw - seems u r banned...

not some more !!!!

I might have a tofu and mushroom burger recipe without any beef in it - will look tomorrow.

Ta v much.

I'd quite like to find a veggie burger recipe which is free on red days but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Today will be difficult as its my OH birthday and we are going out for a meal. Not sure where yet. As we know vegetarian pub food in the UK is usually calorie laden(nuts and/or cheese) and limited in choice. I think I will have to eat fruit and yoghurt for breakfast and make some veggie soup for later to offset the damage.

Apart from a cheese salad - which seems so hard to come by these ads anyway - I don't think there is much chance of anything for a red day. Perhaps having a green day will give me more options and not lead to a blow out which this situation is likely to become...

Will report extent of damage later...

This is what has happened to me with the last 2 pub meals we have had - the first was disastrous, mushrooms on toast which was ladened with oil and the second turn into a liquid lunch with no veggie option!!!! Still doing damage limitation after last Friday.

Re Veggie Burger - have looked and yes they have bread, potatoes, beans etc as the binder but will keep on looking.

Have a nice OH's birthday meal.

Good evening Systema,

That second lunch sounded good!

I think I've had a successful day - relatively speaking.

Breakfast

Yoghurt and fruit

Lunch

Cheese and onion omelette with chips

Dinner yoghurt and fruit

SnaX

Fruit

I ordered a cheese and potatoe bake with salad. They had run out. So I ordered the only other veggie option with salad. And it came with chips! I had no choice from that point. I felt I had tried my best but a higher power was obviously out to scupper my good intentions. However I did leave some of them. And to be fair I didn't have pudding.

So I probably had a green day. Used my syns for oil and healthy extras on cheese.

It would be nice if some pubs dragged themselves out of the 80s and were a little more adventurous with their veggie menu.

Not too bad then - better than my experiences. Said if we go out again it will be to Weatherspoons for 5 bean chilli or jacket and beans, at least you know where you are with them.
My weigh in in the morning so keep my fingers crossed for a loss, even a very small one will do :fingerscrossed:

Will keep an eye out for the burger recipe but not too hopeful - looked at a lot today as I do like a nice burger.

Fingers crossed for your WI!

Breakfast

Linda M red onion saus x 2, eggs x2, tomatoes and mushrooms

Lunch

Fish free prawns 1.5 syns with baby corn, mangetout, cabbage, chilli, lime juice and garlic - gorgeous

Banana

Dinner

Salad with babybel and mixed pickles. 2 x HEA - wonderful

Pineapple with SW cheese cake.

Bad news:

I am distraught that the special offer on the fish free prawns at Tesco is finished! There is no way I'm going to pay £2.50 a bag! Unless it is a special occasion.

Good news:

Found a lovely cheesecake recipe.

1tub of quark
Sweetener
Vanilla essence
1/2 tub asda fat free/sugar free yoghurt
2 eggs

Mix and bake for 40 mins.

Not had HEB today. I could have had potato with my salad if I'd thought about it.

Been careful with syns as pink wine day tomorrow.

I've been thinking about Success Express for a while as I think it might be easier than red and I'm almost doing it any way.

So this is how I understand stand it works:

2/3 super free
1/3 free

For EVERY meal

Practically doing that anyway. Breakfast is an issue but I can incorporate more fruit.

2x HEB 2 x HEA - fabulous - no problem there

15 syns but take the higher value. Fair enough.

All snacks super free only - again already doing that.

The difference it will make is the free food from green which means I can have beans!!!!

So home made veggie burgers here I come!

Well its not going to be a good evening as it will include Thai food and wine.

Up to that point..

Breakfast

Eggs Florentine - wilted spinach with a dollop of cottage cheese seasoned with nutmeg then two poached eggs on top.

Melon and banana

Lunch

BNS soup - made creamy with quark and a little coconut essence.

Salad with lime jerk quorn

Pineapple and mango cheesecake.

Snx

Raw carrot.

Oh well. Will be a good time to start the Success Express tomorrow!
