They are for strength training but that doesn't mean that they're pointless! And it doesn't mean that they can't be incorporated into a good cardio workout either. Everything recommends that people wanting to lose weight do strength training alongside cardio so that they're losing fat but also working on the muscles, which increases your metabolism, will give you a more toned look etc. What he might mean is that you might be toning your muscles but while there's still excess fat there it won't really be noticeable, though you will lose inches too which is obviously good. But, the way I see it is. Would I rather start now so that I'm toning the muscles under my fat so that when the fat comes off, I already look more toned? Or would I prefer to wait til the fat is off, looking flabby still and then start trying to tone up? Either way, the fat will be off at the same point but I won't have to then spend months working on toning so I'll look better sooner. That's the way I see it anyway.
