MiM's & flaxseed recipes

The cake is fabulous!
Did I read somewhere that Brandy is Zero carb - that might be good for a trifle.

Or the idea of dousing Quak's cake in Brandy has got me salivating!

I bought two bags of milled flaxseed from the health shop today. The plain one- ingredients 'milled golden flaxseed' - claims it gas 5g carbs per 15grams. The milled flaxseed with plain cocoa powder I got claims it has 1g carbs per 30grams. Very odd but I think I'm going to just use the amounts listed here and see what happens, if I stall on either of them I'll lay off.

But how can the same seeds have different carb counts?? The ingredient listed is just golden organic milled flax seed, nothing added. So confusing....

I don't have a grinder or food processor so I thought pre-ground was my best bet.

Although 100g of ground seeds would have more carbs than 100g of whole seeds, due to volume. But I'm sure you could get 30g of grounds out of 100g whole seeds, right? So still a lot lot lower. Hmmm.

whats heavier, a ton of feathers or a ton of coal?

lol!!!

Dunno how it works Rosebud, I just do what the labels tell me :) And the Neals Yard one means I can have more - so it works for me.

I agree that I am completely confused on flaxmeal - I now have 3 different types (dark, golden and unspecified that looks like a mix). They all have different carbs and one of them says ZERO :D

MiM trifle is yuk! :(

I so wanted it to be lovely, but there are two big problems - the da vinci syrup was overpoweringly sweet - would leave that out if I did it again, also the MiM was just too rough a texture. Used the dark stuff, so might go another time with the lighter stuff from Tesco. A big disappointment though. :(

Lol! No it's just that, say 100g whole seeds had 1g carbs and when you ground it down you got 50g of flour from it, then 100g of the flour would have 2g carbs. Roughly.

I have been staring at the pack and I think possibly the fibre hasn't been deducted from the plain variety, although even then it's a bit high. I am just going to ignore the stupid carb count! If having them stalls me, I'll stop.

Speaaaking of having them, I made my first today. Amazing! Can't believe I did Atkins for so long and never tried this. They are so dense and filling though, it felt like it must be bad for me! I think I'll limit myself to 2 or 3 a week for now and watch the scales.

Still thinking about trifle.........

For the custard layer what about using Atkins Vanilla shake with less water - maybe 37g (4 scoops) of powder to say 200ml of water - that should make the right consistency? Adds 2.8g of carb to the total and is very sweet so you could reduce the amount of Splenda that you put in the cream?

Am a bit busy to try this out today but it's definitely somewhere on my to do list. I also made a bacon sandwich this morning (MiM spread out to make bread) so maybe don't have the carbs to spare today....but soon!

Hello MIM and Flax Seed Lovers,

I just made my own Flax Seed porridge. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed! It was really bitter.

I bought this brand
Holland and Barrett - Milled Organic Flaxseed

but the cocoa and berry version. I thought it might taste a bit chocolately....but it didn't!

Is it flax seed normally this bitter???

Can you recommend a nicer version from H&B?

Thanks!
