Why Be Normal?
What I posted in the Gold Diary about the Ball Gown
Sunday, June 12, 2011
Well, decided on a dress for the Summer Ball (July 8th). It is one of the smaller formals I have and it fits and does not look too bad. It is lilac and lace and is possibly "vintage" as I purchased it from a thrift store!
I bought it at the RAF base's shop (and this is where the ball will be) so there is a possiblity someone there might recognise it. Probably only a slight possibility as I bought it over a year ago (I think), and it could have been brought in by anyone of any rank and even a retiree.
Plus, I suspect it has not been worn in years (it is somewhat fitted with lace over taffeta). And, I'm not all that bothered... I think it fits well (and will fit even better in a month's time) and will certainly be motivation to stick to my diet and work on some fitness (need to flatten the tummy and tone the arms). The colour suits my fair complexion, too.
Oh, and unlike every other long dress I own -- this one is perfect length (no alterations needed!). Even the straps aren't too long (I think the original owner must have been close to me in size and build).
It is nice to have this sorted and I feel good about NOT spending any money on a dress or wrap (it has a wrap) -- as I have shoes, a bag and jewellery that will work well. So, paying to have my hair put up (I made a booking) won't seem like such a splurge.
My DH is happy with the 15.5 inch shirt that I bought for our son (it was an inexpensive one, but it looks okay). But, we'll need to get over to Lakenheath next Saturday to see about getting him some new dress pants (his are too big and can't really be altered that much).
Below is a reply to something Alli (Herewego) wrote about the dress.
We usually get a professional photo taken at these things, so I will crop DH out of the photo (per his request) and post it on this thread.
Had I read Minz's post I might have had DH take photos as I tried on the dresses for him -- he picked the dress. I have one that I really liked (and thought about wearing because it has a bi-level hem and that is quite the thing now), but he liked this one and I like it, too.
It is nit very piratey... but he has vetoed doing anything theme related. We are such opposites in this! Oh well, he is willing to put on a dinner suit, spend a fortune on tickets, stay up late, socialise, dance, etc. for me -- so, I can wear the dress he likes and not play pirate princess for him.

Maybe it is procrastinating that worked this time: I am still doing my "Spring Clean/Clear Out" and I Finally got the room/wardrobe with the dresses -- so, in the interests of "not keeping it if I will never wear it, etc." I tried them all on. DH settled on the one I'll wear.
And, because DH has lost so much weight I suspected that his dinner suit would need altering. Luckily he has a big chest and shoulders, so losing weight did not make the jacket too big. However, the trousers are beyond alterations. we'll need to go to Lakenheath on Satruday and get him some new ones. Our son's tux shirt (not a good quality one) fits now! I would like to get him a nice one, but he is half-Scottish and wants to wear the one we have. The original shirt is way too large.
