Moonlights' (temporary) Maintenance

Very much with you there especially on the look thing. It's just horrible to be judged - even by the people who know and love you - because your body is bigger than theirs. It doesn't make your brain or heart or soul different (if you prick us do we not bleed & etc). There's just such a stigma attached to weight, and it's such a stupid stigma. Fine being fat isn't the healthiest thing in the world but unlike drinking smoking and drugs (all of which are regularly portrayed as fun and cool) you're unlikely to harm anyone else.

And of course it turns food into a treat or a sin, which throws up infinitely more psychological issues around the whole thing.

Anyhow, food today:

Pan fried haddock fillets with 200g celeriac chips

Venison steak, fried egg yolk, spring onion

Mim made with half flax half almond flour, sliced and turned into cheese on toast.

Mfp: 27g carbs inc meds

i don't think i have every had celeriac but i must admit the fish sounds good, i think i might have either tuna steaks or salmon today now

I can't go round to everyone's diary and say WEIGH WEEKLY to them, so I'm doing it here. If you don't weigh weekly, at least make a contract with yourself not to fuss over daily fluctuations until you've seen the weekly result.

Essentially, bodies are weird things. They'll hang on to fat for as long as they can, or retain water to temporarily fill up the fat cells that your hard work has managed to empty, and theyll do it for reasons divine and mysterious.

Atkins describes a stall as six weeks with no downward movement on the scale. Not one week. Definitely not a couple of days. They body's general mysteriousness has to be accounted for.

Yes, eating the wrong thing can stall you. That much is obvious. But people who think they stall on, say, cheese, or another allowed food, might well actually not stall on cheese. They might have had a week of eating a little more than normal and the salt content might have caused a little water retention, causing a stall. The next week, that would have evened out.

Or, and here's the important one: they might have stalled for no (controllable) reason at all.

People on vlcds have weeks where they stall or loss slows right down. People on every and any diet have weeks, sometimes more than a week, where loss slows or stops for no controllable reason.

Because we're on diets we fuss around and wonder what we've done wrong and what we might change to improve things. I do it. I do it nearly every week. But unless there's a really obvious factor in there, like I've decided to swap my scrambled eggs in the morning for a slice of toast, it's possible I'm fussing over nothing. It would take several weeks of eating the offending ingredient and then several weeks of removing it to prove what might have caused a stall. And after all that it might have been nothing. Just the body being mysterious.

I still do it, and doing it weekly can be maddening. Doing it daily would make me dive off a cliff.

So why should you only take weekly losses into account?

Weight fluctuates, day by day and over the course of the day. Weight loss, especially on Atkins, is not linear. You're not looking for daily losses, you're looking for a downward trend.

If you are looking for daily losses, you're going to be disappointed, and disappointment on a diet can be lethal.

With the exclusion of the first week, possibly two, of starting this diet, you're going to be looking at an average loss of 2lbs a week.

2 pounds divided by seven days equals not very much. It's likely most of those seven days you're going to be anxious or disappointed.

You might not lose for 5 days and drop 2lb on the sixth. Your weekly result will be the same but you'll have spent five days wondering why you're stalling.

I have, in the past, made pacts with myself where if the scales hadn't shown any downward movement that day, I was allowed to cheat. Because what was the point of being good when I wasn't losing anyway, right?

Disappointment, on a diet, is lethal.

Some weeks you're only going to lose one pound. Some weeks you'll not lose. I always hope for 2lb but if it's 1lb it's still adding up, and if it's nothing - well, I haven't gained. If I'd eaten pizza I would have done.

Now looking at it the other way. Count the weeks until say, Halloween. Or Xmas, or new year. Times the figure by 2. That's the average you can expect to lose. Pretty decent when it's all added up, right?

When I think of being ten and a half stone it feels like a distant impossibility. A fairytale figure.

When I think of being ten and a half stone in terms of 2lbs it's 14 weeks. 14 weeks. That's just over 3 months and I could, possibly, have reached something distant and impossible.

Of course I have to increase that for any time off the plan- which is a good motivation to stay on track, but it's also a reassurance that even if I took time off, even if I gained - both of which I have done recently - time does not stop. I can get back on and give myself another 14 weeks, or however long it may take.

Week by week. It's not the days that matter, it's what they average out to, over time.

oh and tried the celeriac last night - not what I expected but not bad! Had them as chips deep fried!
 
Writing on here appears to be my way of procrastinating over writing anything else ;) and I do it for myself really, because I have to remind myself of this stuff almost daily. It's always a struggle.

Celeriac is great! I don't have a deep fryer so I'm not sure of the results in one of those, but I cut mine up then microwave them in a bowl of water for 2 mins. Then toss in oil then with garlic salt, put them on a baking tray and sometimes sprinkle them with dried Parmesan. The garlic and parm really make them taste amazing. I bake at 180 fan oven for 20-30 mins.

They also make a great replacement for potato/parsnip roasties on a Sunday.

Well yesterday mum came back with some of my grandmothers delicious drop scones, which of course I couldn't have and watched jealously as my dad scoffed.

So today after a quick glance at a Delia recipe, I made my own!

Note: I have never made 'real' scones before so I don't know if this is anything like a traditional recipe. It's very close to the same one I use for my almond bread, cupcakes etc.

50g almond flour
1 large egg
1/4 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp butter
Sweetner of choice - I used hermestas liquid
Vanilla essence
Alpro unsweetened soya milk

Rub together almond flour, baking powder and butter into lumps with your fingers. Then mix in the egg, essence and liquid sweetener with a fork. Gradually add a few small dashes of alpro soya until the mix is smooth and a dropping consistency.

Spoon onto a baking tray. For me this made 4 scones and one wee babby one - but you could get lots of little individual bites out of it too, you'd just have to adjust cooking time.

Into a preheated oven until they're golden. For me this was 20 mins-ish in a 180 degree fan oven.

Remove, cool, chow.

These don't taste exactly like drop scones, first off. They're much much lighter and less dense. But they are yummy and nice and crisp on the outside while being fluffy inside. Lovely with a cup of tea. I think this is likely to replace my fairy cakes recipe for me.

About 5g carbs and nearly 500 cals in a batch, so make sure you've planned your day to accommodate that. Also because of the nuts this recipe is for owl, not induction.

Food today:

Pork belly with cucumber and spring onion

Courgette noodles with cheese sauce

1 drop scone and one wee babby drop scone.

Mfp: 28g carbs

Taking the rest of my scones with me tomorrow I think.

Enjoy the Olympics, you will have a great day.....I have yet to bake on atkins but those scones and the swiss roll are on my to do list....any chance you could come up with a "jam" receipe.......scones, cream and jam......mmmm
 
It's a little over 100g and 1 carb per scone as one was about half the size. Personally I have no willpower so only make an amount I know it's safe to consume over 1 or 2 days.

Real jam is much too complicated for me but I bet you could take a couple of berries of your choice and heat them until they go mushy, then add sweetener and it would be lovely. Much nicer than those awful sugar free ones they sell and with no sugar alcohols involved either.

But these are more drop scones. They're flatter not like big poofy ones - though add more baking powder and they'd rise more.
