Pregnancy and Baby Advice Thread: From Conception to Birth, and Beyond!

Exactly my thoughts - I think we'll probably just accept it and then buy a new one and not tell her! I wouldn't buy a second hand mattress for me, never mind for my baby! xxx

My thoughts too. I always check a bed in hotels etc before I sleep in them, I'm funny about beds. I think our mattress was about £40 from boots but we got it when they did three for two so it was free plus we got advantage card points. I think you get 10 per £1 instead of the usual 4 if you're in the boots parenting club xxx

That's just naughty, stressing you out like that! I didn't feel proper kicks until nearly 22 weeks and I wouldn't have known at 18 weeks what baby moving felt like at all. It might be that you do have an anterior placenta but even if you don't you won't necessarily feel anything at 18 weeks. You'll feel so much better once you've heard baby's heartbeat again and the movement will come soon. Are you getting your referral btw? xxx

Hopefully, just hope she can find it easily :) she is going to speak to me tomorrow about a referral, if she says no, ill phone the women myself!

Ooh and re the runny egg thing, I ate one without thinking when I was about 15 weeks and had a right panic! Everything was fine though. I do try to make sure eggs are well done though. Another Costa decaf addict here, I'm looking forward to one tomorrow in fact! xxx
I tried to eat a runny egg but felt terrible, same if I have more than 2 non decaf coffees a day!

Question from me - am I right in thinking that you should buy a new cot/crib/basket mattress for every new baby? MIL text to say that they have collected the second hand cot today and that it came with a mattress. I said not to worry about the mattress as we'd need to buy a new one anyway and she got a bit weird about that, saying that it would be ok as the cover was washable, it looked hardly used and it was from mothercare so a good brand. My thoughts are that I don't bloody care what brand it is - if we need a new one then we need a new one! So do I smile, accept it and then buy a new one anyway? Or just wash the removable cover and that should be ok? I'm in the first camp at the moment...

I've been told to buy a new mattress as I'm having the cot off my sister, I think they advise it, to prevent cot death, I'm not sure but I'm not taking any chances, I'd take it off MIL, but buy a new mattress without her knowing to save her feelings xx

Hiya girls x

I was just wondering if anyone had some "what you need for baby" lists that they'd like to share? :) xxx

I don't as such but have you had a look on the mothercare app (it's on iPhone and android too I would think?)? Mentioned it to Frances earlier. They have an essentials list section on there and it's a really good list of things for baby split into categories (bedding, feeding etc) plus a hospital bag list. I found it v useful! xxx

Ahh thanks hun! I have quite a few things already, and a couple of lists, but I do like looking at lots of lists in case there's anything on there that has been missed off lol ;) Plus I'm going to start getting a few hospital bits and pieces ready to pack in December xx

Hi hun x

Try not to worry, my first scan was at 5+5 and could only see the sack, in fact they wouldn't even show me the screen because baby was only 3.2mm with no HB. So they scanned me a week later at 6+5 and at 8mm, there my little bean was with a heartbeat x so try not to worry - it's normal to not be able to see anything that early xx

Good luck for 2 weeks time hun xx

I don't know hun x mine was actually a really horrible appointment and I came away crying believe it or not! The lady who scanned me was awful. She wouldn't let me see the screen and told me that my dates were wrong and to basically not get my hopes up! Turns out, she was wrong as the lady who I spoke to afterwards said all look ok for about 5 weeks, but just to be prepared that they cannot yet see a heartbeat. It's normal for being that early as it's just too small - plus it all depends on the embryo I think. The average gestation to actually see a heartbeat is 6-7 weeks. It didn't make me feel any better, so I just spent the next week hoping and praying that I'd see a heartbeat.

I'm sure everything will be fine. It is still very early to see a heartbeat, and until you're closer to 12 weeks, it's difficult to tell your dates. I'm sure in 2 weeks time all will be ok, I'll certainly be thinking of you and hoping for you xx In the meantime, try not to panic, or worry. Definitely do not go on google - that was the mistake I think quite a few of us on here made in the early days!!! Scared the h*ll out of us x I know it's easier said than done to not worry, but just got to try and relax xxx

It's so hard I know but try to relax hun, like Jess said it's very normal to not see a heartbeat that early. I was scanned at approx 7 weeks and was warned they might not see much as it was just on the edge and it might be that my dates were wrong but he was there <3 If they thought there was a problem I'm sure they would have told you. They should have explained it a bit more to you though by the sound of things!

Sonographers can come over as being really harsh in my experience, they see this stuff a million times a day and I think they forget sometimes how precious it is to is us and that what to them is just a yolk sac is the beginning of our little baby to us.

And definitely don't google - best advice ever, honestly! xxx

Aww that's awful, horrible woman making u feel like that. It's a scary thing to go through without someone putting doubt in ur mind.

I already did the silly thing of going on google :-( I'm not googling anything again tho cos u read so many horror stories. I'm thinking positive :) xx

Yeh I know it's prob just early days. U just start n question why. I asked the woman who did it n she just said yes it's normal n that was it. The next two wk's are going to feel like forever. I kind of wish I'd not had a 6 wk scan but then again any twinge on either side n I might have been thinking it was eptopic. So I suppose it's good to rule that out xx

Definitely good to have that ruled out early, one less thing to worry about now :) It'll feel like ages, I can't say it won't, but keep yourself busy and keep positive that your little one is doing well in there xxx

Thanks Hun :-D I do believe so too xx x

Congratulations. I didn't have a scan until 13 weeks but from the others have said, it sounds perfectly normal. Sonographers aren't always the most articulate. At my 21 week scan we were told that baby had big brain ventricles and that we had to be re-scanned in 3 weeks. I asked what this meant and she said too much water in the brain and then just left it at that. I tried to stay as calm possible but seriously it did start making me worried. When we went back the measurements were fine and the sonographer who was way better explained that your brain ventricles are a bit like your bladder. If you measured the size of them in the morning they would be much bigger than later in the day because you wouldn't have been to the loo. If only the first sonographer had explained it like that, then we wouldn't have worried. AnywAy sounds like you're doing a fab job and I hope your next scan shows a little baby bean :) x

I had a scan at 7 weeks and they warned me I might not see the heartbeat as they couldn't be certain on my dates. I was a few days further on that I thought and we did see the heartbeat but that was it. They didn't spend ages pointing things out as there was really not much to see. My biggest fear was ectopic as they say there's more chance of it after a lap & dye which I had a month before I fell pregnant. My first question was "Is it in the right place?" and she assured me it was but that was about it. I went for another scan at 11 weeks because of a bleed and then one at 12+4 when they gave me my proper due date which has stayed the same since. The difference between scans is amazing. You'll notice a change in two weeks time then another one when you go at 12 weeks. It always amazes me how clever our little ones are xx

Thanks ladies u have put me at ease. Sonographer's need to realise that it's the most precious thing in the world to us. They might do them all the time n feel like a conveyer belt to them but to us it's the world. xx

Hey Kerry. At my first scan at 5 ish weeks they had to go an intensl as was early n they cud see the sack was I'm the right place but that was all they cud see coz it was too tiny. 2 weeks later I had my next scan n baby was there. Heartbeat n all looking the shape of a kidney bean :)
It's hard n it's the first thing we all do but do try steer clear of google xx

Hey Francis, yeh I also had a internal scan. It's just nice taking to people who have had early scans n seen the same thing. It's silly but u see in the books how it should b looking at 6 wk's n then see nothing in the sack, it's mind boggling! u just think well there should b something there. Obv it's that small tho that the scan doesn't always pick up. I'm defo keeping off Google now. Just makes me feel worse xx
