Pregnancy and Baby Advice Thread: From Conception to Birth, and Beyond!

whoa your midwife doesnt seem nice! i had early bleeding and when i saw the gp she said if i have any bleeding anytime throughout the pregnancy then you should contact midwife of gp. Hope everything is ok xx

This was the midwife team I spoke too, my GPs are useless as they are normally locum as I'm registered with the walk in centre, midwife only works Mondays and Tuesdays and last time I spoke to her she put the fear of god into me because I hadn't felt baby move at 17 weeks and then when I went into see her she was like oh it's normal not to feel baby until 20-22 weeks I didn't mean to scare you!

I've called the 9am line a few times and to be honest every time they've been naff, I called the PAU a few weeks ago to ask them something and the women was awesome so understanding, and when I apologised for calling before 20 weeks she said don't be daft we are happy to help! Hmm shame they aren't all like her!

I've had mixed results with the 9-10 line but usually get someone good in the end. PAU, other than that one time, have been great. It's totally luck of the draw, most of the midwives are absolutely lovely and will help as much as they can but you just get the odd ones. I dunno but it's hard to deal with when you're worried and really you should get the same from everyone you speak to I would think. xxx

I have to say that 9/10 times they've been brilliant with me and I can't fault my named midwife at all, she's fab. Those odd times they've not been great do stick in your head though, especially when you're anxious. xxx

My midwife is a bit pants lol

You would think so wouldn't you, after all they've all had the same training, ahh well 1 good one out of a few make up for it xx

It's sad to hear you're not all happy with your midwives....:( I always think we play such an important role in Someone's life if you don't want to do it you shouldn't! So my apologies to all who have had crap midwives-we aren't all like that!
Every Hosp does seen to have its own way of doing things tho which seems mad to me-surely you should get the same type of treatment wherever you go! Especially since they are all given the same government guidelines to follow!

It's not your fault Susie! I'm just glad you have been kind enough to take time out to help us :) xx

It's tended to be the older the midwife the less inclined they are to help, the student midwife I saw that was in her final year was fantastic :)

No more brown blood now so I'm hoping its just one if those things and I can start looking forward to Wednesday again :) xx

Definitely not your fault. My midwife is lovely and we get on great, not everyone has been as good as her but I don't expect that tbh. You sound like you love your job to bits and are fab at it which is just how it should be xxx

My midwife is a lovely person and we get along well but she's a bit daft when it comes to remembering stuff. She didn't tell me about antenatal classes until after she had started them (and the next lot don't start until after baby is due) so I had to ring around and find some, she also didn't do anything about my flu or whooping cough jabs, I rang the doctors about them myself. But in labour I'd love it to be someone like her because she's so calming and a generally nice person :)

I'm not finishing work til feb. jess finishes up at Christmas.
Joey ur already sleeping on a couple of pillows for hb aren't ya??
Was gona say I've read to sleep elevated so ur lungs aren't so squished when laying down. Wud help breathing n snoring lol

yeah I'm sleeping on 5 pillows and it's still not helping :(

I've (touch wood) not had any issues with MW but I didn't get 1 when I rang up with a Q kinda made me feel like I was wasting her time.. In fairness it was a daft Q that was kinda common sense, but as this is my first time... No question is a daft question.. If I'm not 100% about something... I've got to ask... Just in case.... She did answer my Q but it was just the tut n the sigh kinda approach... Anyone I've been in to see has been great though and have made me feel like they had all the time in the world to answer Q's.. As long as I was going away happy seemed to be all that mattered to them.. Which was nice :)

Was just going to say it seems to be the older MW that are like that.. Maybe because "in their day" it was so different...
And I guess in comparison we do have it allot easier than they might have done... But that's not our fault... lol

Over here injections etc are up to us to book with our GP... Tut... Hafta do everything.... lol

Ugh... my tailbone/coxsix is freaking KILLING everytime I stand up.. And my pelvic bone must have moved or something coz it too is stiff (its an ache.. but more of a stiff ache than a pain ache if that makes ANY sense.. lol)

We have to book them but my friends who've had babies recently were told when they were due etc. If it wasn't for being on here with you girls I wouldn't have had a clue!

Now thinking about it, neither have been mentioned to me apart from when I first went to my GP to have my PG confirmed... I've not been back there yet but been to the hospital twice and nothing was said... Wonder if he'll mention them next week...
When are you meant to get them done?

Whooping cough is from 28 weeks I think but because they messed up my appointment I had flu @ 28 weeks and whooping cough @ 29. Not sure about flu, I just rang and said I wanted it and they booked me straight in. The diabetes team and constants ask me every time I go if I've had them both done.

Yes whooping cough from 28 up to 36, flu anytime but sooner rather than later I would suggest! Some gps Automatically organise, most you have to do yourself!

Joey, reason I asked gestation is that a lot of women find their noses get really congested around 28 weeks plus. It's to do with increased blood flow to tiny blood vessels, hence bleeding gums at times and nosebleeds for some. You might not notice it day to day, but at night when you lie down gets worse as blood doesn't drain away. You could try olbas oil or similar? That might help.
Also, try propping the head of the bed up on some books/bricks etc, that with your pillows will give you extra tilt!
Won't help that at this time of year hearing is going on as well!
Xx

Susie I've chosen to not have either vaccine... I just don't trust they've been tested in the long term enough...
Would you be of the opinion then that you should have them???

I'm just so scared of harming baby.. And while I know sometimes not getting them can have an effect... I just think I'd rather not give my baby anything while I can't keep a watch over her for a change/affect of something....
Bear in mind I've not taken a single paracetemol, or even had a cup of coffee unless its been decaff since before I got pregnant...

Now that's a difficult one hun! Personally I had both but if you were to ask me which is most important I would say the whooping cough one and I would advise you to def have that one.
I know what you mean about the effects etc but it's the same vaccine baby will have when she is a month old anyway so it's been tested for years. That is assuming you will get her vaccinated of course! Which again is entirely your choice but def advise it!
It doesn't cross the placenta, what happens is that your body makes the antibodies against wc and they are what get passed on.
That said there isn't an epidemic going on this year and there was when I was pregnant...13 babies under the age of 1 month old had died from wc when I was pregnant, 2 in Birmingham so it was a little close to home for me not to have it. Hope that makes sense...plus doing the job I do I get exposed to all sorts of nasties!
Can't remember how many weeks you are but if you wanted you could always have it at 36weeks (the latest you can leave it), that way she is fully grown and developed and she will still be protected by the time she makes an appearance!

The issue with wc seems to be that immunity decreases over time (as with most vaccines but this one seemingly keep so), so although we were vaccinated against it as kids, now the level of antibodies in our system isn't high enough necessarily to pass enough on to give baby protection.

All that said hun, it's your choice, you need to be happy with your decisions and not feel you have been pushed into it by anyone! Xxx

Glad no more brown blood. My midwife is probably about 40/50 and is fab. She makes me feel so calm. I've seen her tons because of being midwife led, and so very grateful x
