Go for it, last year I bought myself a new bike & was in the same dilemma, feeling guilty spending so much money, in the end I knew I'd use it & save money (all bit it very little) on petrol cycling to work.
Hey Texty, your sexy Texty thread had me in stitches.
I am going to try and keep at this level as the target I set wasn't with any C , just doing this from home. The extra weight coming off has helped with my cycling which is important to me and I don't want to be carrying any weight that will make it more difficult, a great incentive isn't it. It makes me laugh that we go out for the ride and stop for CAKE ! Or FULL ENGLISH! Mind you, I'm not up to eating the full English yet.
Have you tried going out for a 20 min walk ( a sweaty one) ? That's how I got back into exercise. Just 3 times a week. Made it a must and only 20 mins. Fitted it in round dropping kids at their training and instead of sitting in the car or standing watching them I went for a brisk walk. It did wonders for my well being. Endorphins are great!
The longer, lower intensity exercise uses a different energy system that will eventually star to dent into fat. Jogging, bike, walking etc. I think to really benefit the time has to be 45 min plus , but it all counts. I started to value the 20 mins and what it was worth to me.
What do you think? Could you do it twice a week to see how it goes? Get your head phones on and have a walk.

Lol I totally misread your reply but wont say what I thought it said
Elm, my bike is a basic Evans pinnacle sentinel 1.0 and has been described as scaffolding poles with basic shimano kit hanging off it. It really doesn't owe me much, bought it 3 or 4 years ago for £230 new , they we going for £500 . Now I'm contemplating ( have put a refundable deposit down) on the last Giant defy composite 2 2012 model in a small in the UK. It's got SRAM apex and a 32 on the back that would be ideal for bad boy hills. I have been looking for a couple of months, it's difficult as I feel guilty spending money on myself. Kids, colleges, uni and my kids are sporty and successful at it. Lads if kit, club fees, completion fees and gas for the horrendous mileage.......

Hi Texty, no I've stopped measuring hex's now . I'm well under my target and just keeping to the principals of red and green during the week. I'm really pleased with the way it's gone. I think the cycling has helped a lot too, on top of the running and walking. I do find that I'm quite hungry in the evenings. How's it going with you? How's the back?
