Scrumbles' diary...life after losing a third of me...

I haven't made oopsies or mins yet, but I will next week, I quite like the flax in pancakes and in a pizza base...am I the only one who likes it, I have never found it slimy...

That happens from time to time Tracey, really annoying especially when you've written a saga!
I prefer mims if I slice and toast them once they come out of the microwave, I put cinnamon and nutmeg in the mix, lovely toasted with a bit of Philly !

oh i am glad its not just me then, it came back earlier and was able to post then last post (and a saga at that) i didnt get the send button highlighted and it sent my location as a map instead... jeeeezzzzzzz

i thought flax was nil for real carbs too so i pile it in, i am going to make a sort of kfc coating tomorrow, im going to toast an oopsie or two crumb it up in the processor and add spices and fry some chicken see what its like... mmmmmmmmmm want it now lol

@moonlights, "flat" as in "run-over-by-a-steamroller flat"? Cos if so, I got it spot on, lol! Maybe I should just try to make Swiss roll instead :D

@stubbsey, it was just the basic Oopsie recipe: 3 eggs separated, cream of tartar, 3oz cream cheese, pinch of salt. I'll maybe try some flax in it next time and see what happens!

The MIM recipe is just the basic one I posted earlier. I use half flax:half ground almonds rather than all flax, though, as I'm still unsure of flax on its own.

@sandra, I haven't toasted a MIM yet - will have to try that!

@Di, I think I was put here to make everyone else appreciate their own culinary skills, lol! Nigella and Delia need not fear me...

@Angie, I'm just having to trust that my flax is okay - it doesn't really have proper nutrition info on the bag (eek!)

@Val, a "flat eggy mess" sounds very familiar! :D
The banana essence worked quite nicely with the cinnamon and nutmeg...and, yes, MIMs are very useful for sending me to the park

@sammy, I found flax slimy as porridge, but not mixed with ground almonds in a MIM. Will have to make pancakes at some point! Good luck with the Oopsies...:D

Evening Scrummie... I'm afraid you're getting a reputation of being a whizz in the kitchen lol ... How's the shrinking going ? I liked reading your cals / carbs... I loved the consistency and analysis! Lol xxx

Morning Scrummie

So sorry to hear the oopsies aren't behaving! :) I really like Katie's baked in the oven Mim loaf recipe, have you tried that one?

No, I haven't tried Katie's MIM loaf...thanks for bringing it to my attention! (Something else for me to make a mess of, lol!:D)

No shrinking going on, I'm afraid. I pretty much know why, though - more on that when I have a bit more time (complete with yards of stats if you're unlucky, lol!:p)

At the moment I am undergoing the torture that is Christmas Pudding making

Normally I love doing it - shove everything in a bowl and stir, even I can't get that wrong!;) - but of course, being on Atkins this year means there are no perks, ie. I can't nibble on the raisins and sultanas while I'm sorting through them, and I shouldn't really be finishing the leftover Guinness either  Plus I'm going to have to endure the most tantalising smells while the things are steaming for 8 hours on Sunday...:( Still, I'll be having Christmas off plan no matter where I am with my weight loss, so at least I get to eat the end result in a few months!:D

i usually make puds too not sure if i will this year though. i cant wait for crimbo.

is Katies mim in the oven recipe on a diary link or a recipe thread?

Morning scrumbles - hope your steaming puds aren't leading you astray too much!

Hope you enjoy the loaf - once i started using the oven for flax things i much prefered the taste and texture - worth the time!

I particularly found having frozen slices useful when breakfasting on hols with rest of family - i would have bacon and eggs and then toast and marmite - just like all the normal people!

So, I am out of Pudding Hell

I would love to say I survived it, but I kinda didn't. It was Saturday that did the damage: found myself incapable of throwing away perfectly good Guinness, so I worked out the carbs and drank it, which would have been no big deal except that it gave me the idea to have a couple of G&T's later on...and then another couple on Sunday night

I didn't exceed my carb limit (now at 40g per day, though I hardly ever get near it) but had quite a few more calories over the weekend than I normally would, so I guess that'll probably scupper any loss for this week...not that I was expecting one anyway, tbh.

Having observed that my losses seem to have quite a distinct pattern, I did a bit of research and discovered that a study in 1982 concluded that there can be a significant boost in metabolism in the second half of the monthly cycle. This would explain why my biggest losses (which are never very big, mind you!) always seem to happen in the week before my period starts. For the rest of the month my body is pretty good at getting by on what I'm feeding it without needing to tap into my fat reserves, but come the end of the month when my metabolism goes up it seems it has no choice but to make up the shortfall, and I lose some weight...ta da!!

I haven't worked out what to do with this knowledge, mind you. All I know is that when it comes to losing weight I'd rather be a man any day...it's all so much less complicated for them. :/

That's really interesting research Scrummie ! Which website sis you find it on? I'd be interested to see what was said about folk who are passed it on monthly cycles ! Lol I can imagine their metabolism is completely none existent !

Hope you have a good day! Xx

Hey Di, like an idiot I didn't save any of the links I visited  I originally found the study mentioned on a blog posting somewhere, then googled to find the study itself (of course, I'm not a scientist so I wouldn't expect to understand it - I just read the summary!) As for what happens post-menopause, that's a whole other ball game, and I will confess that I haven't gone into it much yet. All this hormonal stuff is so complicated...does my head in, lol!

As predicted, no movement on the scales this week - well, I'm still a half pound down from posted, but that's as good as it gets. My bad(ish) weekend pushed average daily cals up to 1550 whilst carbs actually went down a bit at 30g per day. It'd be tempting to say that I'm eating too much to lose, but since I lost a pound in ten days on my last diet break eating quite a bit more, I don't think it's that. I've never identified any specific stallers yet either. I just think my hormones have decided that I ain't losing no weight this week, and that's it. Next week is when I should see a loss if my pattern is repeated, so if I don't, that will be the time for a re-think.

Having said that, I'm still pondering on whether I can influence the process (I wouldn't be me if I wasn't :p).

Made a nice MIM variation this morning for breakfast:

17g flax meal
17g ground almonds
8g cocoa powder
half tspn baking powder
1 tspn granular sweetener
pinch of salt
1 large egg, beaten
14g butter, melted
2 tspns Davinci sf praline syrup
dash of Alpro unsweetened soya milk

So, so easy, as with any MIM. Just combine the dry ingredients in a mug, stir in the egg, butter, syrup and a little soya milk if necessary (mixture should be a dropping consistency), then microwave for just over a minute (1 min 20 secs in my micro) and it's done.

I've tried a few variations but this is probably my favourite so far. I'm using bronze flax, which has a slightly nutty flavour that seems to work nicely here. The texture is quite dense and sufficiently moist (whilst warm) to make for very pleasant eating without need of a topping. I have no idea what it's like cooled down, by the way, because it was never going to last that long! :D

It's about 400 cals and a smidge under 5g carbs (depending on your exact ingredients) and only suitable for OWL and beyond because of the nut content. :)

Since I seem to be well and truly hooked on cocoa bark, I decided last night to invest in a silicone mould so I can have a bit of fun with it:

6 Little Scottie / Scotty Dogs - Chocolate Collection Silicone Mould Woof! :D

Spent a ridiculous amount of time choosing...could have bought loads of stuff from there!

Hope everyone's having a great, Atkins-friendly day! xx

Afternoon, sigh for the sts, that mim sounds good, it will go on my list of things to bake, I have yet to make any kind of a mim, the thought of cooking them in the microwave kinda puts me off....

Awww that's so cute!

I'm going for hearts and buttons - like this - New Buttons Chocolate Candy Cookie Cake Topper Jelly Silicone Mould Mold Tray | eBay

Niiiice! :D

I've always fancied making confectionery but have never gotten around to it - funny that it should finally happen when I'm on a non-sugar diet like Atkins, lol!

Tbh I wasn't too excited by the idea of microwaving - have never really liked any microwave cake recipes I've tried - but this does work for me. I think the important thing is to have plenty of flavouring in there because flavours don't have much time to develop in a micro. That's my theory, anyway!

I'm quite addicted to them at the minute, I have to confess! They're so quick to make (I prepare the dry ingredients the night before which makes it even quicker) and I'm getting a bit of extra fibre in my diet every day from the flax which seems to be helping in the regularity department :D

Hey, Katie! Just had a peek at your website and it looks fab! Well done! :D

Well, I've been keeping an eye on my weight the past few days, and I am cautiously optimistic that there is some downward movement - it might well bounce back up again, but at least I hit a new low in the meantime!

And if I am going down, that would be right on cue since it's now the last week of my cycle - prime time for me to lose going by my previous observations.

Still wondering how best to approach this. I suppose I could try slashing calories in the first two weeks of my cycle, then upping them in the second two weeks when my metabolism goes up? That might even out my losses. Or alternatively I could go completely the other way and eat at more or less maintenance level for the first two weeks (as long as I stay under 50g carbs I shouldn't disrupt ketosis) then reduce cals and carbs for the last two weeks to try and maximise weight loss during the time when my body is most liable to tap into its reserves? Could work!

Of the two, I think I like the second option better. For one thing, I'd get to eat loads for two weeks in every four, and for another it would regularly force me to make significant changes in what I eat, and that in itself could be of benefit to me - I have long suspected that I am just so steady in what I consume that I give my body too much opportunity to adapt.

Anyway, I'm still pondering...won't decide anything until I see how this month plays out. :)

Morning, I love all your musings on the ins and outs of loosing weight, you really seem to know your body, I might try keeping a more detailed account of my fluctuations to see if there is ant pattern. Good luck on whatever system you decide on.
