JanD's Maintenance Diary. Week 38 onwards.

Wednesday 5th May

Breakie - 1 weetabix, blueberries, splenda & skimmed milk

I had to have half of an Alpen light bar when I was in Tescos late morning because I could feel that horrible shakey fainty feeling coming on. DH had the other half.

Lunch - The LAST of the soup YAY!!!!!!! a slice of ham and a baby beetroot.

Tea will be River cobbler with spinach & roasted tomatoes & courgette.

I'm not sure what I'll take to work yet - I've got some extra light phili individual portions. I may take one of them and a couple of oatcakes or crispbreads as well as a pouch of soup.

Laters :) xx

Sounds like your glad all that soup has gone now!!! :giggle:

Hark at me you and taylor getting on the river cobbler wagon today!!! :)

I surely AM glad that's all gone! I'm taking soup to work tonight but nice soup with chicken & stuff in ;)

Yeah I've just commented on the same thing about the cobbler on Taylor's thread :)

So I'm taking the chicken & veg soup (Bachelor's pouch) a portion of phili light, 5 melba toasts and a little pot with silverskins & cornichons (corchinons? never can remember lol!)

I had to have another half of an Alpen light bar this afternoon. I'm not eating enough obviously. I'm going to have more sunbstantial meals now and just not snack - it's definitely the inbetweenies that scupper me!
Here's to another rota NOT picking at Mum's or in work! That's just made me think - I have to stay up tomorrow to take mum to the hospital, I'm probably going to need something there before going as it will be several hours since I've eaten. It'll probably be a pear or a small banana. xx

Woohoo, you go girl, you have done remarkably well, and well done on getting through all that soup!

Brilliant news on all your Family finishing the marathon and raising all that money - hats off to them all.

Going on that horrible shakey feeling you have been getting Jan, I too get that sometimes, but I have noticed on my menu's that when I do actually get it, its when I have fruit for breakfast. Sometimes it doesnt come after having fruit for breakfast, but when I DO get it, its always after early morning fruit.

Now if I remember correctly, when I was starting re-feed last year, it said not to have fruit until evening if you were insulin resistant, so I am thinking, maybe its to do with our ages too and the fruit. Just a thought that I thought I would mention to you.

Thanks Mary :)

I was proud of the kids I must say - all are more or less back to normal now ;)

Re the shakey thing ... thanks for your thoughts, thing is this only happened today - the first day I haven't just had fruit since last thursday .... hmmmmmmmmm. I'd love to find a link so that i could avoid it. I HAVE learned to always carry something with me (usually an Alpen light bar as they're only 70 cals) and to have some of it as SOON as I feel the feeling starting. If I leave it to 'see how it goes' I end up feeling awful, having to sit down & eating anything and everything I can get my hands on!

It will undoubtably have something to do with age ...... every other flippin' thing does!!! ;) :) xx

I am sure when I read of your shakey feelings, you had had berries or such with your breakfast. Just keep a close eye on it though.

I too eat as soon as I feel it coming on. I made the mistake of not eating last October in Turkey, when I went out with a couple of female friends early morning shopping. I nearly collapsed and had to get a chocolate bar and a taxi home. I was staggering down the stairs, with the help of my friends, and Phill really thought I was totally pi**ed. I left it too late that day that I ended up spending most of the day in bed and didnt feel right until the next day.

Yeah - I pretty much always have berries or something with it .... hmmmmmmmm must try to take note.

I've never got as bad as you were that day, scary stuff! Lesson learned tho' eh? xx

Good idea, I might join you. Better go & give DH and hour's attention before I go to work - might 'see' you later xx

Here's a few of the things I found Mary .....

first of all there's this link

http://www.power-surge.com/php/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t22611.html

and then a couple of replies to a similar question on a health forum ...

It sounds to me like you're hypoglycemic, which would mean your body is overreacting to sugars and dropping your blood sugar. I've recently realized (and confirmed with a nutritionist) that I have this problem, and I feel shaky and weak and somewhat hungry, exactly as you described. I've learned to control it pretty easily by watching the amount of sugars/carbs I eat, especially fruit, and eating more protein throughout the day.
My advice, if you think you are hypoglycemic: make sure you have protein whenever you eat. Never eat just fruit or bread, etc. all by itself. (Good call on the cottage cheese!) Cut down on how much fruit you eat at once - maybe 1/2 a grapefruit instead of a whole one for breakfast.
For example, I now buy soy protein bread instead of regular bread. If I want some fruit, I will eat a little cheese or cottage cheese with it, and make sure not to have more than a small serving. Eat protein bars instead of granola/cereal bars.
I hope that helps, and good luck solving your problem!

You really should have your blood sugar levels checked...tell your Doctor just what you told us. A lot of the diabetics I know have issues with breakfast cereal...I'm not saying this is the case but you could be diabetic. Often times cereal, no matter how healthy will cause a blood sugar spike, and then it falls rapidly about 1 ½ to 2 hours later causing the feeling of being shaky. It?s only one possibility mind you, and my experiences are limited to the affects breakfast cereal has on my husband and his diabetic father but if this is the case you do NOT want to let it go.

Most of the stuff of course refers to Diabetes. I know I don't have that but these things make sense and now I know it CAN be a hormone surge well of course that's what it MUST be ;) ...... KD always says about having protein with carbs too .. wise lady ... hope you're having a good night xx

Yes Jan, I too try and eat protein at each meal, and cut down on the fruit until later in the day. It only ever happens to me an hour or two after breakfast, but recently it seems to have been much better since I have been monitoring the fruit.

I had my blood sugars checked a few months ago at the Docs and obviously it was fine, so I know I dont have diabetes, but I just monitor what I eat and when now. I used to have a banana with cereal/porridge in the morning, and then about 1-2 hours later, I would feel this shaky feeling coming on - its much better now.

Yeah, night has been going well up to now, how about yours?

Yeah - same old .... I'm watching Three in a bed on the itvplayer at the mo. It might be a bit boring but if I don't have much to do it means everything's okay with my patient so that's okay with me.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern with my 'shakes' I get them maybe once a week? I'm going to start making a note in my diary (pocket diary not on here ;)) So I can hopefully start to see if there's anything noteworthy. xx

Not itvplayer - 4od :) x
