MWWWD (or Moonwatcher's Weight Watchers Diary!)

Saturday 26th January

Went shopping today and stayed after shopping for a steak at Wetherspoons, followed by a piece of Vanilla cheesecake. Not going to list it all, but my totals for the day, including bagel for breakfast, scone, three bites of a raspberry and white choc cake, hot choc, and the Wetherspoons, plus a cider and a small glass of wine were 70PP.

Totals for the day - 70PP, 28 dailies and 42 weeklies!
Weeklies remaining 7
APs - a few for walking round the shops for about three hours - not on the go the whole time - say 4?

Oh and WI Saturday morning - lost another pound, so sitting slap bang on the 15 stone mark at the moment.

Sunday 27th January

Will update food for today tomorrow. Off to bed now - cough has taken a turn for the worse again - been very chesty and phlegmy all day, and now ears and throat are sore, but don't know if it is a proper sore throat, or just sore from all the coughing. I feel the same way I did just before Christmas! Benylin and bed - hope I get some sleep. :(

God its a pain. My cough hasn't left either and it seems to take my breath away. Making it really difficult to battle cravings. Hope you feel much better tomorrow. Sleep well x

It's awful isn't it? Really gets you down and makes everything seem such hard work. I have phoned in sick this morning as I have hardly any voice and am wheezing, so I'm going to ring the surgery later to see if I can get an appointment. I hate taking anti-biotics, because they usually upset my stomach and I think often by the time people get them their body has already begun to fight the bug off on its own, but enough is enough. It may be viral anyway, in which case I'll just have to wait it out, but if it's bacterial and they give me something, then this time I'll take it. Had enough of it now. I suspect it might be a cold on top of the old cough!

Poor you with a houseful of poorly peeps - yourself included. Hope you start to feel better soon, and the little ones too.

Just back from the surgery and the Doctor thinks it is whooping cough, with another cold now on top, which is why the symptoms have got worse again. It's not contagious now, (well the whooping cough isn't, but obviously the other cold is!) I have to go back for a blood test on Wednesday - not that they can do anything other than codeine linctus, but it's to rule out anything more sinister. I have just brought two small sausage rolls from the local deli to add to my sandwich lunch. Points will be over a bit this week, but it is my birthday tomorrow, so I've decided to have a few extra points anyway. Glum enough as it is, being ill for Christmas and my birthday, without denying myself one of my favourite sausage rolls (well, technically two of my favourite sausage rolls, but they are small!)

OH is cooking me dinner tomorrow night, which is pretty well pointed - maple mustard chicken thighs with mashed ginger and orange BNS, plus veg/salad, and fresh fruit salad with ice-cream. This will be pointed, not too bad, any alcohol consumed won't be, but I'm 51 for heaven's sake! I need something to make me smile!

Thanks Atomic. Yes, definitely pants about the cough - don't want to play anymore! I'm having the rest of the week off tracking - feel like crap; phlegmy cough, sore throat, ears, bunged up and headache. Just can't face tracking points, so having a few birthday treats and aiming to eat what I fancy in moderation. If I gain, so be it...

Mmmmmmm. Unpointed treats :) They sound much more appealing than usual given I am on my 500 calorie day! Hope you thoroughly enjoy them all. When is your birthday? Hope your cough and general "urghhhh-ness" doesn't get in the way of any plans.

You do right, take time out, get well and enjoy your birthday. Hope your horrible sickness fecks off soon xx

Thanks Mrs Lmc and Atomic. Birthday is actually today, but because it was a work day we had always planned to 'do' it this coming weekend instead. OH has tried really hard bless him to make it a nice day, but I'm more like 'yes lovely, now just leave me alone in bed for a while!' :)

Had crumpets, biscuits and fish and chips with a sausage today, followed by a magnum, but could only eat about half of the fish supper and two-thirds of the magnum!

Have made a decision to give the JUDDD a go - starting today! May seem a bit of a strange time to start it, as I've said I'm not going to track for the rest of the week with feeling so ill, but I have read quite a bit of the science part of the book, and at the moment I am especially interested in the part about it helping to reduce inflammation and the effects on asthma. Now I don't have asthma I know, but I am wondering if it may also be of some help with the whooping cough inflammation etc., and at the moment I feel so rough that I think anything is worth a try! I'm not very hungry at the moment either, and will be at home for the rest of the week, so several things seemed to add up to it being a good time to try it. As we are aiming to have some birthday celebrations on Saturday and Sunday it will mean I can do so whilst still being 'on plan.'

I'm not using shakes, as I will be starting with what food I have in the house, so maybe purists would say I'm not really doing it at all!

I still have a few reservations - like the argument that your body adapts to constant dieting and that up and down days help to break it out of that pattern. (very over-simplified explanation I know!) Fair enough, but equally, won't your body get to 'expect' the alternating days and react in the same way? What I have read so far suggests no, but I can't help wondering.

For the moment I'm going to keep this diary going, as I'm anticipating coming back to WW - although who knows, I may fall in love with this way of eating, and feel the benefits so much that I defect permanently. Later I may start a JUDDD diary, or may change to the 5:2 diet once I see how I get on with this. For now I will probably lurk on the JUDDD board!

I'll most likely record my info on MFP, and although I know you don't have to monitor your calories on up days, I may calculate the WW points for a week here and there, just to see how it works out

So, the plan for day one is

Breakfast - one toasted crumpet, tspn butter and tspn maple syrup (131 cals)

Lunch - one piece tiger bread, tspn mustard, 1oz ham, one iceberg lettuce leaf and 5 cherry toms (131 cals)

Dinner
- 1oz chow mein Lidl noodles, one red pepper, half an onion, 2 oz cooked chicken, one garlic clove, tspn grated root ginger, dsrtspn soy sauce (241 cals)

Total is 503 cals, which I'll take!

Forgot to add drinks - water and green teas

OOoooh welcome to the newly joined fasting club ;) I am REALLY enjoying it so far, and after my first fasting day the scales were done 3lbs, which although isn't an official weigh in result or anything is definitely very motivating!

How did you leave on the reduced calories? I think alot of people find it easier to have breakfast and dinner and just cut out lunch, eating tends to set off hunger more than just avoiding food. Something that is mentioned in the 5:2 book which I don't think is covered in the JUDDD book is to try and avoid high GI foods on the fast days as these will also not set off your hunger as much. Really hope you (and all of us!) get good results with it, and that it might help with your cough. I do agree that there are a few holes apparent in the science and the logic behind the diet but i do think it seems to currently have a better evidence base than alot of the diets out there.

Ohh lots of people seem to be trying JUDDD or 5:2. I'd love to see how you get on. I just wouldn't trust myself on up days they way I eat! Good luck x

Yes I must admit that worries me too. Although when I tried the Paul McKenna book and method a few years ago I found that it was true that when I could eat anything I wanted I didn't splurge. I am hoping that will be true this time, once the pressure of 'always dieting' is gone.

Yeah I suppose that could be true. Hope you do really well x

Well so far so good! I had a few stomach rumbles until around 4.00pm, but I have had that since taking the codeine and I think it may be linked as much to that as to the food. I have also been a bit irritable this evening, but that's probably because of feeling ill. So overall I'd have to say today's fast was a success. It was surprising how satisfying the stir fry was for the portion size. I expected to be planning tomorrow's food, but haven't really thought much about what I will eat, which was also a surprise - I thought I would be quite fixated on food!!

Great stuff :) I think the fasting as well as being able to have what you want on non-fasting days does make you less fixated on food which seems to make you want to eat less. And the other really positive discovery is that hunger isn't that scary, who knew???!

Interesting start to the day - didn't feel hungry at all when I woke up, which I thought I probably would. A couple of times I caught myself thinking 'no, can't have that...' then remembered 'No, that was yesterday!' Had a pre-breakfast snack of two jammy mallow biscuits with a cup of tea. Stood there with the pack in my hands thinking I could have three if I wanted, but genuinely only wanted two! Have also had a morning coffee and cream, which on WW I normally limit to one a day in the afternoon with the OH, because of the points. Wanted a bagel for breakfast but forgot to defrost it so have just had a crumpet with butter instead and may have the bagel later or for lunch.

The scales show exactly the same as yesterday, but it's not an actual weigh in - I was just curious and

a) my body is all over the place with this cough/cold - I usually find I gain when I have a cold - body hanging onto fluid?
b) I'm not sleeping well at all - apparently sometimes also causes you to hang onto the pounds!
c) the codeine linctus is renowned for causing constipation.
d) despite eating what I wanted earlier in the week I haven't actually eaten that much since Saturday, as I have felt full really quickly. Even the fish chips and magnum day only added up to around 1600 cals as I didn't eat it all. So my body is probably still expecting starvation!
e) I had noodles and soy sauce last night - both of them cause me to hang onto fluid the next day.
f) it is only day one!

I think my only problem today will be eating enough calories as I just don't have much of an appetite. Was planning a lamb dish with pomegranate syrup sauce, but can't face cooking, so may go for a takeaway. I'm not planning to have takeaways every up day though!

Not sure if I will have an official WI this Saturday as I will only have been on the diet for 3 days, so I may wait until the following Saturday.

This is very interesting reading !! Can't wait to see how you get on........ thought of fasting has surprisingly never appealed to me but with all the hype at the mo I have been tempted

I don't think I could do a complete fast - just water only, but I quite like the challenge of sticking to the 500 cals with 2 or 3 'meals' a day. I am struggling a bit though - not with the idea of actually sticking to it, it is more that after years and years of dieting I have finally over the last 18 months managed to come to terms with the idea that slow steady, sensible and sticking to it is the solution, now here I am having 500 cals three days a week, which seems to be the exact opposite! I had promised myself 'no more fad diets.' Not saying this is a fad diet, but it flies in the face of current standard advice. Having said all that, the science and the psychology of it seemed convincing so here I am, giving it a try!

What I really do like is that I am going to be able to cook some of the things that I constantly put off - e.g. I have a book of home made ice-cream recipes and I have drooled over them and then thought about trying a lower fat version, but it's not quite the same is it? :D I'll be able to try them on 'up' days, and make old favourites like steak and kidney puddings and apple pies occasionally too without a major points juggling act, or feeling I've broken the diet, so I'm really rather hoping it does what it says on the tin!
