MWWWD (or Moonwatcher's Weight Watchers Diary!)

Well folks, the chilli festival was great. We bought - fudge - probably the best fudge I have ever tasted, no chilli in it though, but loads of different flavours! Also picked up some firecracker salami sticks - far too hot for me but the OH likes torturing himself with one now and again, some Norfolk made soft cheeses - one with lavender and one with apricot, a bottle of ginger beer with chilli and some 'Farmite' sauce - yep, chilli and marmite sauce -just like marmite, you'll either love it or hate it! I was a bit disappointed that none of the stalls selling fresh chillies had any chipotle, as I was hoping to buy some to make my own chipotle paste/chutney. Anyway we had a good couple of hours mooching around there, then went to Sheringham until mid evening, as it was the Carnival week parade, which was good fun.

Today wasn't quite so enjoyable as I had an appointment with the consultant at the hospital this morning. Cutting a long story short I have had one scan, one biopsy and a blood test, and will have to have another more detailed scan to check that the ovarian cyst is unchanged from last time (apart from it getting smaller, which is good). The biopsy results should be in in about a week, but the consultant thinks at this stage that my oestrogen levels are higher than usual after menopause because 'larger ladies' often produce oestrogen because the extra fat cells cause the body to convert other hormones into oestrogen. After menopause we don't have enough progesterone to balance it out and this can cause the bleeding. I sort of knew half of this from the days when I practically lived in the gynae's office! Unfortunately it can also keep the womb lining thicker, which means the ultrasound cannot see if there is anything in the womb lining that shouldn't be there, hence the need for the biopsy to check out the tissue samples. Sorry if TMI there. So I'm sort of halfway there - just have to wait for the second, more detailed scan and the various results. Managed a picnic on the cliff-top afterwards, (even our hospital is beside the sea!) and a short stroll along the sea front, but owing to having to walk like John Wayne without his horse at the moment, we didn't go far!

Food the last two days - picnics, chips and ice-cream, but not huge amounts of any, no chocolate and only one gluten free cake (double choc muffin!) All my weeklies are gone though. Finally feeling the benefits of the wheat/gluten removal though.

Atomic - I have just googled cassava and thyroid function - very interesting. It was very tasty as a chicken coating, but I shall only use it occasionally. Have been 'borderlined' for thyroid function myself, so will be aware of that!

Quick hop on the scales this morning and I am now up to 15.8! Official weigh in not until tomorrow, but at the moment that is a gain of 2 lbs this week, or 3.6 lbs the last fortnight. Can't see that all disappearing overnight. Have always been OK using all my weeklies in the past. Oh well, WI will be what it is. Again.

Had breakfast/brunch out this morning as loads of running around collecting and delivering various cars and vans - scrambled eggs, bacon, a couple of sausages, mushrooms, tablespoon of beans, followed by fruit salad and a yogurt. The sausages were not gluten free, but I was paying for an all you can eat breakfast, and just bacon and eggs didn't cut it. I managed to resist the crumpets, toast, muffins, hash browns and cereals though. Have also confirmed that HP sauce is not gluten/wheat free. (Nooooooo!) Waiting to find out how much car MOT will be. Seem to be reacting to the sausages already. So, all in all, a pretty glum day really.

Eurrghh! That's a really frustrating day all round :( Grrrrrrrr! Hope the car behaved itself in the MOT so that doesn't add to the pantsness.

Hopefully the scales will be behaving better by tomorrow, you never know, they do do some strange things sometimes don't they? Otherwise do you think it could still be the after effects of the wheat? Or you body adjusting after Atkins? Either way fingers crossed its much better than you expect and next week's is even better.

The car passed the MOT, but waiting for our friend who did some work beforehand to call back and let us know how much. Already spent about £100 on new tyres and the MOT itself, so hoping it won't be too much!

I don't know about the scales really Atomic, although I doubt that tomorrow's result will be helped by the 4oz bag of tropical fruit trail mix I have just scoffed! I don't think I have got the wheat/gluten thing quite right yet - still odd things creeping in, as this week especially I haven't been focussed enough, and I feel I am still quite inflamed from it, although overall feeling the benefits more. I'm am also pretty sore and swollen from yesterday, so that may be part of it. I reach a stage where for a while I get fed up with trying to second guess reasons or possible reasons. In the past that is where I would have totally given up (not just for a packet of trail mix, but for about six months!) It is awful though, because the 16 stone mark is looming closer again.

Posted that before I had finished, so more to follow!

Anyway, on a more positive note, if I haven't frightened you all away, I have spent a few hours on the Coeliac UK website. You can join for info even if you are not a diagnosed coeliac. They have a great food database, and an eating out guide, where I was pleased to find several local places -even chip shops that will cook in different oil with gluten free ingredients, and one that has a gluten free Monday once a month, where they cook gluten free for the whole evening. There are tea shops, restaurants, pubs, veggie restaurants and even Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, Ask Italian and Dominos have jumped on the bandwagon and do gluten free pizzas etc. It has cheered me up a bit, as eating out was becoming a bit of a mental stumbling block - making me feel very negative about it. Even a local Mexican is on the list, with a pretty large offering of gluten free stuff.

OH is back to work on Monday for the week, and then away next weekend with his son, so I am hoping to get some kitchen time in (in between the gardening and ironing!)

I have even found some on-line recipes for HP sauce -here's hoping!

Morning everyone. Seems quiet on here this morning. Have finally had a chance to have a read of a few diaries and do a bit of subscribing.

Well, WI this morning and I am quite frankly amazed. 15 st 5.6 lbs. That is only a loss of 0.4 lbs from last week, but down 2.4 lbs since yesterday morning! My weight has fluctuated madly up and down all this week. Perhaps I should scoff a bag of tropical fruit trail mix every Friday night! It may go up again tomorrow of course, but this is the lowest it has gone to this week, so I'm taking that! About half a pound on old scales, not much, but it has been a holiday week, so good enough, and at least it puts me back closer to the 15s than the 16s.

We're having a very lazy morning (which for me means kindle, web and minis) and are trying to decide what to do with the rest of the day. It is dry here, but very dull and cloudy. May nip out to the coast anyway. Need my ozone fix! What does everyone else have planned for the day?

Fantastic news that the scales behaved for you to get a loss! Really pleased. Although very much understand the previous comment about getting so bored of second guessing why they aren't doing what you want. For this week at least they are cooperating :)

Also really good news about finding so many restaurants that do gluten free food. I am sure that will really help.

Whoop whoop well done on your loss it's mad isn't it how your body can be up one day and down the next! Really glad you wer down today
Your relaxing day sounds fab I love days like that!! Hope you enjoy it and your walk on the coast

Congrats on your loss! I've been trying to play around with my weeklies to get the best results. Last week I ate all my weeklies on the first day and had a 2lb loss that week. Then this week I stretched them out over the week and I've only lost 0.6lbs so far.

I hope your medical appointments go okay. It's not nice waiting about for appointments and results.

I am lactose intolerant so I know a bit about the frustration of not being able to eat what you were previously able to! It's good that restaurants are starting to do gluten free recipes. I wish restaurants would do lactose free things :( It's hard because I love pizza, chocolate etc but from experience the lactose free cheese tastes like crap! The dairy free chocolate is SO GOOD though.

Thumbs up for the weigh loss this week, nice to see you are feeling a bit more positive, I know it can be very frustrating when you feel like your body is fighting you (I definitely have days like that). Brilliant about the gluten free eating out choices in your area, at least you now have some choices and won't feel restricted so much. I know when I was diagnosed with diabetes I felt like I'd been told to stop breathing, it's not a nice feeling to have your food choices restricted and it's hard to explain to people how much it affects you emotionally. Anyhoo, enough of my waffling, have a lovely relaxing day, I'm done for the day now too, been to work this morning and then straight to the local shopping centre for some odds and ends. Got home about an hour ago, ready to put my feet up :)

Thanks Atomic. I was very surprised - almost didn't weigh, thinking it would be bad news. Glad I did now!

Yes, I was quite excited to find somewhere with a list of recommended places nearby. Also have eaten out today gluten free, and found a couple more places with gluten free choices in the town on the coast we often go to. I would have been really disappointed to have to give up meals out, as they are something we 'do'.

Thanks. Yeah, our bodies are weird. I always laugh when someone says 'just eat less and move more' - wish it was always that straightforward! We had a lovely afternoon, but the weather has really turned here - I'm back wearing a jumper!

Thanks. I can imagine lactose intolerance is difficult for eating out. I have been studying menus a lot more lately, even when we havn't been eating in the places, and I think I have only seen one place that has mentioned dairy at all. I suppose veggie places that do vegan food would cover it, but that's not necessarily what you want is it?

Thanks. Interesting about the emotional side if it, as I was thinking about that today. I mean, we're all on here because we want to lose weight and therefore are restricting our food choices, but it's still a choice. It feels completely different when it's not such a free choice to make. I have had IBS for years (well, possibly I haven't, as it may in part have been wheat or gluten intolerance all that time, but that's another story) and wouldn't have expected it to be a big deal as that has restricted my food choices too, but this felt like a real downer - maybe because there are so many foods to consider and give up or change. If I was in any doubt about needing to do it though the sneaky sausages yesterday put paid to that yesterday and today!

Going to join you with my feet up - watching 'The Americans'. Will update with food later.

Food for Saturday 10th August

Pre-breakfast - the last ounce of the tropical fruit mix (3PP)

Breakfast - one oz gluten free oats with a little milk (4PP) - counted a point for the milk - some for teas later.

Lunch - lunch out in Cromer at the Rocket House Cafe http://www.rockethousecafe.co.uk/ overlooking the beach and the pier - gluten free falafels with mixed salad, chillies and mint yogurt dressing (9PP), pot of earl grey tea with milk ((1PP) and one coffee with cream (2PP)

Tonight - watching TV, buckwheat crispbread with tbspn of Philly cheese, half an ounce each of Norton's Dairy St. Swithin's soft cheese with apricot and with lavender. Got these at the chilli festival the other day - could easily have eaten the whole tub of each! Had a couple of pickled onions, a tspn of home-made sweet chilli jelly and about 4 gluten free chilli and lemon 'hummus chips' (by a company called Cofresh - these are chick pea crisps in a shell type shape and they are gorgeous.) (8PP)

Snacks - most of a packet of walkers cheese and onion crisps (4PP) one finger of a Cadbury's twirl (3PP)

Drinks - lunchtime tea and coffee counted above, two vanilla chai teas with milk left from breakfast, one gin and slimline tonic at the pub in Sheringham (2PP), one glass of cider (4PP)

Total 40PP, 29 dailies and 11 weeklies. Weeklies remaining 38. Also earned a few APs - not planning to use them, but walked for a couple of hours in total at Cromer and Sheringham.

Although we didn't eat there, checked out the menu at the pub we popped into, and they do some gluten free mains - a couple of curries, gammon, steak, chicken melt, and their chips are gluten free! Yay!

Pic of yesterday's lunch. You can't see from the picture, but the salad mountain in the middle is about six inches high from the bottom of the bowl!

Fallafel salad looks gorgeous. Yum yum. Glad you've found more places to eat gluten free. I think you're very right about the emotional element to have a choice forced on us rather than one we are making ourselves such as for weight loss. I know that eating and food isn't an emotional thing for everyone but i suspect that must be an element of that for all of us on here or else we probably wouldn't be in the position of trying to lose weight.

I very much agree with the whole "eat less, move more" fallacy. If only it *was* that simple for all of us :(

Oooo! I love falafel, I can't trust myself to stop at 1 portion so I don't buy them in. And that salad looks delicious! Thinking about it, I'm sure I have a WW recipe somewhere, may have to dig that out!

Food for today, Sunday August 11th

OH is back to work tomorrow (just for the week though, then he has some more leave booked), so it had to be Brunch at the coast (predictable -moi?)

Brunch - ham, egg, bacon, chips and peas - this took up most of my points, but it was a nice contrast to yesterday's much healthier salad! (20PP)

Walk along the beach, sat on the rocks and had a read, then walked back along the front to have...

Afternoon Tea - small gluten free toffee brownie and pot of earl grey tea (7PP, 6 for brownie, 1 for milk)

Snacks - 3 oat and golden syrup biscuits (4PP)

Drinks - water, half a cappucino with brunch (1PP), lavender earl grey and vanilla chai teas (1PP), slimline tonic water with lemon juice

Total 33PP, 29 dailies, 4 weeklies. Weeklies remaining 34. Earned a few APs on the walk.

Not the healthiest day today. Was going to have a fresh fruit salad tonight, but stomach still playing up so can't face it. Really wish I hadn't given into those sausages on Friday as they seem to have put me back to the start again! Lesson learned - remind me of this if there is a next time!

Going to plan some meals for tomorrow, then bed, as OH's alarm will be going off at 4.45!

Decided on a fishy day in the end. Lunch will be cockles with lemon and black pepper and buckwheat crispbread, and have got some sea bass out of the freezer for tonight. Just had water and green tea so far - will have melon for 'breakfast' in a mo. Very late breakfast, as just could not sleep last night - still awake at 3.30 - so went back to sleep after OH left for work!

Thanks Lauren. Will be having a wade through the freezer this week to try and use some of my supplies!
